00:30Put it on that table before it gets cold.
00:58It's getting late. You'd better call Mr. Butler.
01:01I done called him two times already, Miss Butler.
01:04Seemed like he don't ever come down till I called him the third time.
01:07I think tomorrow morning I'm gonna call him the third time first and save them other two calls.
01:18Goodbye, dear. Take care of yourself. See you tonight.
01:20Henry!
01:21Huh?
01:22Aren't you gonna have your breakfast?
01:23Yeah, sure.
01:24Didn't I have my breakfast? Darling.
01:28My goodness, I'm so busy I'm way ahead of myself.
01:30Memphis, why didn't you call me?
01:32I did call you, sir. I called you and called you till I was black in the face.
01:36Oh, you did, huh?
01:37Very good, Memphis. Very good. Black in the face. Did you hear that, honey?
01:41Pardon me.
01:42Pardon me. Let me have this piece, will you please?
01:55Well, what is that?
01:57Grace Norman got a divorce from Jack.
01:59I'll get you in the paper.
02:01She photographs well.
02:02Wish I photographed as well.
02:04That's too bad. They could really have made it successful if they tried.
02:08Don't you think so, dear?
02:11Henry, did you hear what I said?
02:13What did you say, dear?
02:14I said Grace Norman has got her divorce from Jack.
02:17Oh, that's too bad. Who?
02:19Grace Norman.
02:21What about her?
02:22She got her divorce from Jack.
02:24My, my. Well, for goodness sakes.
02:26They seem such a happy couple to me.
02:29Miss Butler, there's a man on the phone who wants to know,
02:32do you want dove or bridal figures on the cake or both?
02:36But the man's holding the phone.
02:38Somebody want me on the phone?
02:40No, dear. It's just... Tell him I'll call him later.
02:42Yes, sir.
02:43Hey, honey. Look, I want to call your attention to something.
02:45You see that? That's mine. Look.
02:48See that? Goldberg's.
02:51No wonder he doesn't do any business.
02:54Darling, what day is today?
02:56The 7th is Tuesday.
02:57I mean the date, dear.
02:59The 6th.
03:01Does that mean anything to you?
03:03I'll say it does.
03:05Why, it's the day before our big annual sale.
03:07Look, honey, look. You see that?
03:09Every family in town has this on their breakfast table right now.
03:12You know, Henry, sometimes I think you're married to that department store.
03:15It's better to me.
03:16Sometimes I think I... Oh, honey, don't be silly.
03:19Uh-oh. 8 o'clock. Got a big break.
03:21Goodbye, dear. Take care of yourself. I'll see you tonight.
03:23Have you got your glasses?
03:24Yeah.
03:25And your keys?
03:26Yeah.
03:27And a clean handkerchief?
03:28Yeah.
03:31Well, great.
03:32You don't have to worry anymore about someone forgetting your anniversary.
03:35Do you, kid?
03:36I should say not.
03:38It's perfectly marvelous, Clara, this feeling of freedom.
03:41I keep pinching myself to see if I'm really awake.
03:43And I got the most wonderful property settlement thanks to my brilliant attorney.
03:47He comes from the East. He's perfectly charming.
03:49His name is Gilbert Wayne.
03:50Oh, no. Of course I'm not in love with him. Don't be silly.
03:53Really, Clara, I don't think I'll ever love again.
03:57Hold on a minute, dear. There's someone at the door.
04:03Why, Essie!
04:04Hello.
04:05How sweet of you to come.
04:06Come on in. I'm talking on the telephone.
04:08Sit down, dear. Make yourself comfy. Help yourself to cigarettes.
04:11Oh, dear. I always forget you don't smoke.
04:13Hello, Clara.
04:14What were we talking about?
04:15Oh, yes. Love.
04:16Well, personally, I'm sure there isn't a man living that I'd trust.
04:19Not one.
04:20They're all born cheaters.
04:21It's Clara Drake.
04:22Sometimes I wonder how Wilbur ever puts up with her.
04:24But then he's such a stuffy boy.
04:26Huh? Uh-uh.
04:27Well, listen, dear.
04:28I'll have to say goodbye, but then I'll see you tonight.
04:30Are they invited to your anniversary dinner?
04:32No.
04:33You're going to Essie's party tonight?
04:34Well, then I'll see you there.
04:36Goodbye, dear.
04:37That woman.
04:38Once she gets you on the phone, there's just no getting rid of her.
04:41Effie, how sweet you look.
04:44So, this is your 20th anniversary.
04:47Congratulations.
04:48I suppose Henry's beaming.
04:50Well, as a matter of fact, he forgot it.
04:52Effie, no.
04:54That's just the way my Jack started.
04:56I'd look into it.
04:57Well, there's nothing to look into.
04:59He simply forgot it.
05:00He doesn't forget the day he used to leave on his fishing trips,
05:02and he didn't forget the day he was to leave for his large convention in New York.
05:05But he did forget to come home on the day you were getting married.
05:08But business kept him after the convention was over.
05:11That's what he said.
05:13Someday you'll get your eyes open.
05:15Men are all alike.
05:16Liars.
05:17Cheats.
05:18I know.
05:19But my Henry isn't like other men.
05:21Oh, he's different.
05:23That's exactly the way I used to feel about Jack, then came the awakening.
05:27Oh, don't get the idea that I'm bitter.
05:29Not at all.
05:30Why, Jack and I are the best of friends.
05:33Oh, pardon me a minute.
05:36Well, hello, stranger.
05:38Come right in.
05:39Hello, Mrs. Norman.
05:40How are you today?
05:41Never felt better.
05:42Give me your hat.
05:43Come along.
05:44I have a friend I want you to meet.
05:45Mrs. Butler?
05:46Mr. Gilbert Wayne, my attorney.
05:48How do you do, Mrs. Butler?
05:49How do you do?
05:50Well, I suppose congratulations are in order, eh?
05:53Well, are all the little details taken care of?
05:55Oh, yes.
05:56Your husband's been very generous.
05:58Oh, you mean ex-husband.
06:00Pardon me.
06:01Now, here's your final decree, signed, sealed, and delivered.
06:04And here's your check.
06:05Settlement in full.
06:07Very generous, don't you think?
06:08Yes.
06:09Yes, indeed.
06:10But, of course, stinginess never was one of Jack's faults.
06:13Not so bad, eh?
06:15Oh.
06:17And I suppose he was just as generous with your fee.
06:20Well, if you remember, according to the settlement agreement,
06:22that was to be taken care of by you.
06:24What's that?
06:25Oh.
06:26Oh.
06:27Oh.
06:28Oh.
06:29Oh.
06:30Oh, is that?
06:31Oh, oh, yes, of course, certainly.
06:34Well, uh, you see, uh.
06:36Well, there's no hurry about it.
06:37Anytime at your convenience.
06:39Yes.
06:40Yes, of course.
06:41Well, I'll send you a check in the morning.
06:44If you'll excuse me, I'll be running along.
06:45Goodbye, Mrs. Butler.
06:46Nice to have met you.
06:47Thanks.
06:48If I can ever be of any service to you.
06:49Oh, save your breath, Gil.
06:50She's one of the happiest women I know,
06:51married 20 years today, and to the same man.
06:53So?
06:54That's right.
06:55Congratulations, Mrs. Butler.
06:56That's a record to be proud of.
06:58Yes, I think so.
06:59If we were all like Effie, you'd starve to death.
07:02Well, goodbye.
07:04Goodbye, Mr. Mason.
07:08Goodbye, Gil. Thanks again. I'll see you soon.
07:10Yes, I'll be in my office all day tomorrow.
07:13Goodbye.
07:14Goodbye.
07:18Well, how do you like him? Isn't he wonderful?
07:20By the way, have you invited Jack to your party?
07:22Well, under the circumstances, no.
07:24Well, in that case, do you mind if I bring Gil?
07:26You know, he said he'd like to meet some of my friends.
07:28Why, it's quite all right. Bring him by all means.
07:31Oh, yes, I mustn't forget to make a place card for him.
07:33How do you spell his name?
07:35Gilbert Wayne.
07:37W-A-N-E.
07:42Opal, put that at the place next to Mrs. Drake. Right there.
07:45Yes, ma'am.
07:47I'm sure glad to hear Mr. What's-his-name's are coming.
07:50Why?
07:51Because without him, it would have been 13.
07:52And 13 is bad luck, Miss Butler. Mighty bad luck.
07:55Oh, don't be ridiculous, Opal.
07:56What did you do with my present for Mr. Butler?
07:58Oh, here it is. Where do you want me to put it?
08:00I'll put it. Thank you.
08:01All right.
08:02Uh, Miss Butler, don't you think it's time you'd get in dress? It's getting late.
08:05Oh, I'm all ready, except to slip on my dress, and that won't take but a minute.
08:08Has the ice cream come?
08:09Yes, ma'am.
08:10And the cake?
08:11Yes, ma'am.
08:12Uh, Memphis, have you put on Mr. Butler's clothes?
08:13Yes, ma'am.
08:14Good. I'll run up the chain.
08:15Yes, ma'am.
08:16Oh! Mrs. Butler!
08:19Oh, what's the matter?
08:20You don't walk under that ladder.
08:22Oh, is that all? I thought something had really happened.
08:25White in the same place.
08:28That's bad.
08:29I wouldn't be surprised if this surprise party don't turn out to be the wrong kind of surprise.
08:35Oh, no. That doesn't make sense.
08:40Uh, get me Mr. Johnson, the hospital department. I want to speak...
08:43Uh, I want to...
08:45Uh, you're going home?
08:47What did you do, take the afternoon off?
08:49I...
08:51Seven o'clock?
08:52Oh, no, no, no.
08:53No, no, no. It can't be seven o'clock this time of the day.
08:56Can't be.
08:57Oh, it is seven o'clock this time of the day. Goodness sake.
09:00Well, what are you doing here? Why don't you go home?
09:04Goodness sake, seven o'clock.
09:06How time flies.
09:07I'm late for dinner again.
09:09It better be cold or Ethel will be mad.
09:18Can't get enough done.
09:21Work all day and do nothing.
09:28I'd like you to okay these fashion show numbers, H.J., before you go.
09:31See, we're using them the first thing in the morning.
09:33I'm disturbed over the show to speak of this sweater. What's wrong with it?
09:41I can't see anything wrong with it.
09:43Well, I don't like it.
09:45How do you like the drape of this formal?
09:49I don't approve of it.
09:50Well, frankly, neither do I.
09:51Annette, change to the turquoise blue.
09:54It's a bit daring, but the lines are gorgeous.
09:56I'm sure you'll agree that this cocktail ensemble is perfect.
10:00I don't like it.
10:01But, H.J.
10:03I don't like it.
10:05Well, make a substitution.
10:07Change to the jersey print.
10:10Oh, H.J., I want you to see my arrangement of the wax models in the window display.
10:14I'm sure you'll like it.
10:15Do you think you'll have time?
10:17I suppose so.
10:18Fine.
10:19All right, come on, girls.
10:20Make those changes as fast as you can.
10:21Mr. Butler and I will be downstairs.
10:22We'll see you there.
10:25Now, here's what I mean, H.J.
10:27Now, you take...
10:28Well, take the figure, for instance.
10:30By the way, I call her Hetty.
10:32Don't you think there's a resemblance?
10:34Hetty?
10:35Oh, yes.
10:36I saw her in that picture called Gone With the Wind.
10:39Wasn't she wonderful in that scene with Rhett Butler?
10:41That was Vivian Lay.
10:42That was Vivian who?
10:44Vivian Lay.
10:45Never heard of her.
10:46Now, to get back to the figure.
10:48We not only call attention to the gown,
10:50but we also emphasize the vanity without stressing it too much.
10:53Mm-hmm.
10:54That sounds all right.
10:55Very good idea.
10:56Uh-oh!
10:57Careful there, H.J.
10:59After all, this is my department.
11:01If you want any changes made, just tell me.
11:03What's wrong?
11:04Well, I'm sorry, but I thought maybe the hands should be tilted just...
11:09Tilted?
11:10Just a little bit.
11:11Just a little tilt.
11:12A weeny tilt.
11:14Like that?
11:15There.
11:16Now, that looks much better.
11:17And is there anything wrong with Carol over there?
11:20Oh, Carol.
11:22Let me see.
11:24Uh-huh.
11:25Well, I think that...
11:27No, nothing wrong with Carol.
11:29She looks fine there.
11:30Looks very comfortable.
11:32Very good likeness, too.
11:33It's a good job.
11:34Good job, Mr. Sibley.
11:35Now, let's see.
11:36Da-da-dee-dee.
11:37Oh-ho-ho-ho.
11:39The bed.
11:40The bed.
11:41I don't like the bed.
11:42What's the matter with the bed?
11:43Well, I just don't like the position of the bed.
11:46You see, we're featuring the mattress and the bedding.
11:49See?
11:50Not the bed alone.
11:51Now, I'll show you something.
11:52Anyone passing by outside on the sidewalk and looking in here, all they can see is the foot of the bed.
11:57Just the foot.
11:59They can't see the...
12:00Look, I'll show you.
12:01Just move it over a little bit, and I'll show you.
12:03Just a little.
12:04No harm.
12:05No harm, Mr. Sibley.
12:06Now, would you mind pushing the bed just a little bit to the right?
12:09That's it.
12:11Oh, too much.
12:12Too much.
12:13Back a little bit more.
12:16Too much.
12:17Now, just a teeny-weeny...
12:20There.
12:21There you are.
12:22Now, you see, that looks better.
12:23And look.
12:24Anyone passing by and looking through the window can visualize themselves sleeping peacefully on our double-X slumber mattress.
12:32Don't be long, Will.
12:33My auntie will never forgive us if we hold up her party.
12:36Be back in a jiffy.
12:39Everything looks lovely.
12:40Everything is fine.
12:41Now, there's just one more thing, Mr. Sibley.
12:44I think that Carol would look much better over here on the bed than over there,
12:48because over here she would attract more attention to the bed.
12:51Don't you think?
12:52Definitely not.
12:58Well, I...
12:59Oh, there you are, girls.
13:00H.J., were you okay in these costumes?
13:02Sure.
13:03Come here, little girl.
13:10Move it right around.
13:12Mm-hmm.
13:13Very good.
13:14Very fine.
13:15Say, now, Mr. Sibley, while we're at it,
13:17I just want to show you what I mean about Carol being over here.
13:20Now, wait.
13:21Now, just watch.
13:22Just watch.
13:39Oh.
14:04What are you looking at?
14:06Shh.
14:07What are you looking at?
14:18And on his 20th anniversary, too.
14:21Poor Effie.
14:23Well, I guess I've been in the wrong kind of business for the last 15 years.
14:27Wilbur.
14:28Come on.
14:31Now, look, Clara.
14:32You're a pretty good friend of Effie's, aren't you?
14:34Yes, I am.
14:35Well, then, keep your mouth shut.
14:36Now, come on.
14:37Get in.
14:38Let's go.
14:39Never mind.
14:40Come on.
14:41Don't you think Carol looked much better here like that?
14:43I most certainly do not.
14:45Come on, girls.
14:46Let's go.
14:47Annette.
14:55I guess she didn't like it.
15:21Oh, my goodness.
15:22What have I done?
15:27What did Sibley say?
15:30You know, I've never given a party when it was a surprise for Henry before,
15:33and I'm just as nervous as a child.
15:35You shouldn't be nervous about it.
15:36You're old enough.
15:37Oh, but old enough.
15:39Oh.
15:40Pardon me, please.
15:45Oh, Clara.
15:46Hello, dear.
15:47Well, if we're late, you can blame Wilbur.
15:49You know his saving.
15:50Always some last-minute business to attend to.
15:52But you're not late, Clara.
15:53Henry isn't home yet.
15:55No?
15:56No.
15:57Well, he's probably just working over something at the office.
16:01You know how he is.
16:03When he has anything on his mind, time means nothing.
16:06Well, I'd look into this, my dear, if I were you.
16:09What's out?
16:10Oh, I'm sorry, dear.
16:12No better kid, Jeffy.
16:14She's spoiled because my work's over at 3 o'clock.
16:17All men don't have bankers' hours, you know.
16:20Oh, there's Mabel and Bert.
16:22Come along, dear.
16:23But I'll see you later, dear.
16:29Oh, look at that.
16:31What are you laughing at?
16:32These old snapshots of you and Henry.
16:34They're priceless.
16:36Have you come to the one with Henry and me on our honeymoon
16:38with Niagara Falls in the background?
16:40No, not yet.
16:41When you see the hat I'm wearing in that one, you'll die.
16:46What an awfully smart dress, Clara.
16:48So becoming.
16:49Don't you think it thins you down a bit?
16:51Oh, thank you, dear.
16:52Well, you know there's a great deal of competition these days, Jeffy.
16:55But I'll never lose yoga through my carelessness and appearance.
16:58Aren't you putting on a little weight, dear?
17:00Oh, a little perhaps, but it doesn't bother me.
17:03Henry likes it, and he's all that matters.
17:05Oh, yes, of course.
17:07Pardon me, please.
17:08Say, when do we eat?
17:10Shh.
17:11As soon as Henry gets here.
17:12Be patient.
17:13Patient?
17:14I thought on a deal it would have made me $2,000 to get here on time.
17:19Oh, darling.
17:21Good evening, Mr. Wayne.
17:22Hello.
17:23My dear, my dear, will you ever forgive us for being so late?
17:25We got caught in the most frightful traffic jam in just the one time in my life
17:28I wanted to be on time.
17:29Was Henry surprised, what he said?
17:31Well, you're not late.
17:32As a matter of fact, Henry isn't home yet.
17:34Of course, he didn't know I was giving this party for him,
17:36but he's never been this late for dinner before.
17:38Well, you phoned the staff?
17:40No, no, because I expected him any minute.
17:42How's Jack been doing?
17:43How did he come out on that deal?
17:44Oh, it was simply wonderful what he did.
17:46Well, that's marvelous.
17:47Wilbur, darling, will you get me another glass of punch?
17:54Doesn't it seem strange to you that Henry isn't home yet?
17:57Why, yes, it does seem strange.
17:59I could tell them where he is.
18:02Why?
18:03What do you mean?
18:06Well, on the way down, Wilbur had to stop at the office.
18:10That's near Henry's store.
18:12And she got out of the car and went over to the window,
18:15and when she peeked in the window, there was Henry.
18:21Still water runs deep, you know.
18:23He was born under the sign of Leo, and they're born playboys.
18:26How do you know what sign he was born under?
18:28His birth date's the same month as mine.
18:31Oh, then what does that make you?
18:35Are you reading the right number?
18:37Garfield, 3651.
18:40Oh, you are.
18:50I feel so sorry for poor Effie.
18:53If she ever finds it out, it will break her heart.
18:56There he was, sitting on the bed with a beautiful girl.
19:00Not Henry Butler.
19:02Henry Butler.
19:04Damn.
19:13What's the matter, Miss Butler?
19:14Look like you done seen a ghost.
19:16Oh, Memphis, I'm so worried about Mr. Butler.
19:18Will you take the car and go down to the store
19:20and see what has happened to him?
19:21Yes, ma'am.
19:23I sure wish you hadn't walked under that ladder.
19:27But it's very important.
19:29She got an awful blow there.
19:31She looks terrible, awfully bad.
19:35Huh?
19:36Oh, no, no, you can't wait until in the morning.
19:38I got to get her fixed up tonight,
19:39because she got to be in the window in the morning.
19:41Yeah, I'm in a hurry.
19:43Huh?
19:45Yeah, oh, oh, oh, thanks, Max.
19:47Thanks.
19:48All right, I'll drive her right down.
19:49I'll be right down there right away.
19:50Yeah, OK.
20:21Oh, oh, oh, oh.
20:47Stop for a black sedan.
20:49License and B column.
20:5116B988.
20:5416B988.
20:57Body of dead woman reported in back seat of car.
21:00Man is dangerous.
21:01May be armed.
21:03That is all.
21:04Rosenberg.
21:05Now, don't worry, Mr. Butler.
21:07She had a pretty bad bump.
21:08But I'll have her back in the morning looking like she just
21:10stepped right out of a beauty shop.
21:11That's fine, Max.
21:12That's a load off of my mind.
21:14Now I can go home and have dinner in peace.
21:16Dinner?
21:17Yeah.
21:18What?
21:19At 9.30?
21:20Is it 9.30?
21:21My, my.
21:22Bedtime.
21:23What will Effie say?
21:25I'm sorry to have kept you all so late.
21:27I know you must be starved.
21:29You said it, Effie.
21:30Bertrand.
21:31Well, I'm hungry.
21:32Early yet, Effie?
21:33Let's give him a few more minutes.
21:34How would it be if I did some of my card tricks?
21:36Oh, thank you so much, Wilbur.
21:37But I think we'll have dinner now.
21:39Come along, folks.
21:41Now, folks, let's have a toast.
21:44Oh, I love toasts.
21:45Make it a funny one.
21:47To our charming hostess, may we all
21:49live to be invited to her golden wedding.
21:51Oh, isn't that cute?
21:53That's very sweet.
21:55And to our invisible host, absent in person
21:58but with us in spirit.
22:01I am not.
22:03Now, look it, fresh guy.
22:05What did you do with the blonde woman you had with you?
22:07I didn't have a woman in my car.
22:09You didn't, eh?
22:10No.
22:13We found these in the back seat of your car.
22:16How do you alibi that?
22:18Oh.
22:19Oh.
22:20I know.
22:21They must have fallen off a carol when
22:22I carried her out of the car.
22:23I thought you said you didn't have
22:24a woman in the car with you.
22:25I didn't.
22:26Well, then who's this carol?
22:28She's a model.
22:29I suppose a model ain't a woman.
22:32Now we're getting somewhere.
22:34Where did you hide her?
22:35I didn't hide her.
22:36I took her down to Max to get her fixed up.
22:38Fixed up?
22:39Yeah.
22:40Max said he'd fix her up so that Mr. Sibley
22:41wouldn't know about the accident.
22:43Accident.
22:44Sibley.
22:45Max.
22:46Wait a minute.
22:47Now let's get started right from the beginning.
22:50Well, to begin with, Mr. Sibley wouldn't let me touch her.
22:53So there's another man in the case.
22:55Jealous, eh?
22:56No, but he thinks a lot of her, too.
22:58This guy Sibley and you?
23:00Yeah.
23:01You take her away from him and, uh...
23:03No, no, no.
23:04No, you see, it was like this.
23:06He left me alone with her.
23:08And after he'd gone, I picked Carol up
23:10and I was taking her across the room to the bed.
23:13I want to lay her down there.
23:14But going over there, I tripped and she fell to the floor.
23:17And when she fell, she must have hit her head on the bed.
23:20Yeah.
23:21Go on.
23:22Yeah, I'll go on.
23:23Yeah.
23:24So I turned her over, see?
23:26And when I did, I hit her head on the bed.
23:29Turn her over, see?
23:30And when I did, I noticed a big gash in her head.
23:33And I knew that if Sibley came the next morning
23:35and found that big gash in her head,
23:37he'd be furious because I know Sibley.
23:40So what'd I do?
23:41I pick her up and take her over to Max to get her fixed up.
23:44And I was hurrying home to dinner when an officer stopped me.
23:48Well, of all the cold-blooded guys that I ever met,
23:51Mr. Police, I tell you, I ain't done nothing.
23:54No, I suppose you just drove that car
23:56into City Hall Fountain to watch it.
23:58Of course, I had a nervous shock,
24:00and I was tearing out for home
24:02when the fountain just jumped right up in front of me.
24:05I...
24:07Oh, Mr. Butler, they done kissed you, didn't they?
24:11Do you know this man?
24:13Yes, I works for him.
24:15So you're in on the murder, too?
24:16No, sir, not me.
24:18Where's the body?
24:19I don't know what he done with it.
24:21I told you, it's down to Max Waxworks.
24:23Max Waxworks?
24:24Yes, Max Waxworks.
24:25If you don't believe it, go down and see.
24:27I'm gonna lock these mugs up before I go screwy.
24:29I gotta have time to figure this out.
24:31Come on, you.
24:32Hey, you can't do this to me.
24:33Oh, Brian, the whole thing is screwy.
24:35Max Waxworks still be...
24:37Heather, swell time.
24:38No fooling, Effie.
24:39It was great.
24:40Really?
24:41Come along, Clara.
24:42I know just how you're feeling, dear.
24:43But don't worry, Henry'll have a good excuse
24:45for not coming home.
24:46I hope.
24:47Clara?
24:48Coming, dear.
24:49Good night, darling.
24:50Good night.
24:51Well, as usual, always the last to leave.
24:53Good night, Effie.
24:54Good night, Mrs. Butler.
24:55Good night.
24:56Thank you so much for inviting me.
24:57Well, I'm so glad you joined us.
24:58I hope to have the pleasure of meeting your husband sometime.
25:00I'm sure you will.
25:01What do you mean, Gil, in court?
25:03Oh, no, no, I didn't mean it that way, Mrs. Butler.
25:05Oh, I'm sure you didn't.
25:06Good night, Effie.
25:07Good night, my dear.
25:08Come on, Gil.
25:10So your Henry's different.
25:12Ha, ha, ha.
25:15The next time you take a wax model down to Max Waxworks,
25:19I hope you do it on my day off.
25:21Now get out.
25:22Here, take these with you.
25:23Come on, Memphis.
25:24I'm gone.
25:32What are you doing that for?
25:33I figured the quieter I was getting in,
25:35the less noise there's going to be later on.
25:37Yeah.
25:39I think you got something there.
25:54What's all this?
25:55That was your 20th anniversary dinner.
25:58My anniversary?
25:59No, couldn't have been.
26:00Couldn't.
26:02It was.
26:03I said it was.
26:05Yeah, you said it was.
26:12Why didn't you tell me it was my anniversary?
26:14You didn't ask me.
26:15Oh, no.
26:20Good night, boys.
26:21Good luck.
26:22Yeah.
26:23Yeah.
26:24Yeah.
26:27Come on, puppet.
26:28Come on and tell me.
26:29Why didn't you tell me?
26:30Why didn't you tell me?
26:31Why didn't you tell me?
26:32Don't tell me no lie.
26:33Why didn't you tell me?
26:34Why didn't you tell me?
26:35Why didn't you tell me?
26:36Why didn't you tell me?

27:31Why didn't you tell me?
27:32Why didn't you tell me?
27:33Why didn't you tell me?
27:34Why didn't you tell me?
27:35Why didn't you tell me?
27:36Why didn't you tell me?
27:37Why didn't you tell me?
27:38Why didn't you tell me?
27:40Why all the sneaking?
27:54I didn't want to wake up my wife.
27:56She...
27:57Hello, Effie, dear.
27:58Hello, Effie.
27:59I...
28:00I bet she thinks something's wrong.
28:06Whoever the gal is, she certainly has a dainty foot.
28:08What are you going to do about it?
28:10Well, I...
28:11I don't know.
28:12Nothing like this has ever happened before.
28:14How do you know it hasn't?
28:16Just because you didn't catch him
28:17doesn't say it didn't happen.
28:19Well, I...
28:20Now, listen, old wife.
28:21All men are cheaters at heart.
28:23Now, don't say you didn't catch him.
28:25He's a good man.
28:26He's a good man.
28:27He's a good man.
28:28He's a good man.
28:29He's a good man.
28:30He's a good man.
28:31He's a good man.
28:32He's a good man.
28:33He's a good man.
28:34Now, don't say my Henry's different because he isn't.
28:38Well, I...
28:39I know it seems a little, but...
28:41A little?
28:42What does it take to convince you?
28:43Both shoes?
28:44With a blonde in them?
28:46Now, you just let me handle this
28:47and be thankful you had your eyes open
28:49while you're still young.
28:53If you're calling Henry,
28:54I don't want to talk to him.
28:56That's the spirit,
28:57but I'm not calling Henry.
28:59Hello, Mr. Wayne, please.
29:01Oh, is that you?
29:03Hello, Gil.
29:04Well, I've got another client for you.
29:08Uh-huh.
29:10Mrs. Butler.
29:15A Mr. Gilbert Wayne to see you, sir.
29:18I don't want to see anybody.
29:21Nobody at all.
29:22I'm a very sick man.
29:24Very sick.
29:26Yes, sir.
29:27I'm sorry, sir, but...
29:30Mr. Butler?
29:31My name is Gilbert Wayne.
29:33How do you do, Mr. Wayne?
29:34What can I do for you?
29:36I'd like to talk to you about your wife's divorce.
29:38Yes, yes, go on.
29:43Divorce?
29:44Yes.
29:45Being a gentleman,
29:46you naturally won't fight the case.
29:47In fact, I'm sure you'll agree
29:48that the more quietly it's handled,
29:50the less scandal will be attached to it.
29:52Now, about the property settlement...
29:53Wait a minute, wait a minute.
29:55Just a moment, just a moment.
29:58Just a moment, please.
30:02Now, the first thing I should demand is
30:04that Mrs. Butler be given the house free and clear,
30:06and then...
30:08Hello.
30:09Who is this, Opal?
30:11Oh, this is Mr. Butler.
30:13I would like to speak to Mrs. Butler.
30:15As far as the automobiles are concerned,
30:17I shall be perfectly willing to allow you to retain yours.
30:21Hello.
30:22I'm sorry, Mr. Butler,
30:24but she says she ain't home.
30:27Oh, she did, huh?
30:29Well, shall we get down to business?
30:33Yes, Mr. Butler?
30:34Tell my attorney, Mr. Kimball,
30:36to come over right away.
30:39Despite your objections, Mrs. Kimball,
30:40the fact remains that my client wants her freedom,
30:42and has employed me to act for her.
30:44I concede your point, Mr. Wayne,
30:46but I protest that you are not giving my client,
30:48Mr. Butler, the respect and consideration due him.
30:51Naturally, we will file objections to the case,
30:53and Mrs. Butler's complaint.
30:54Very well.
30:55If you and Mr. Butler want a fight,
30:56we'll give it to you.
30:57I was hoping that we could come
30:58to some mutually satisfactory agreement,
31:00but obviously, I was wrong.
31:01I should hope so.
31:03Effie, you don't know what you're doing.
31:05If you'd only let me talk to you as a friend.
31:07Mr. Kimball,
31:08I shouldn't have to remind you
31:09that your actions are rather unethical.
31:11I apologize.
31:14Now, the first step is for you
31:15to establish another residence.
31:17Right in my home?
31:18Yes.
31:19Oh, no.
31:20I don't want to do that.
31:22With all my pretty things,
31:24furniture, my pictures.
31:26Oh, no.
31:29No, I won't do that.
31:30Very well.
31:31In that case,
31:32it's up to Mr. Butler to move out.
31:33Who, me?
31:34Yes.
31:35I won't.
31:36Out of my own home?
31:37I won't budge.
31:38And you can't make me.
31:39Can he?
31:40No.
31:42Very well.
31:43Then I shall insist, Mrs. Butler,
31:44that Mr. Kimball and Mr. Butler
31:46Very well.
31:47Then I shall insist, Mrs. Butler,
31:48that you install a third person in this house
31:50as a witness
31:51who can testify in court
31:52that you and your husband are living apart.
31:53In that case,
31:54I shall insist that Mr. Butler have a witness also.
31:56Yeah.
31:57Yeah.
31:59I have a complete list of the community property
32:01and shall insist upon Mrs. Butler
32:03receiving her full share.
32:05What did you say about community property?
32:07Just a moment, please.
32:09Mr. Kimball and I will take care of the details
32:11if you will just sit down and be quiet.
32:12Be quiet?
32:13In my own home?
32:14About my own divorce?
32:15Well, this is a fine state of affairs.
32:17I can't open my mouth in my own home?
32:19Well, let me tell you something.
32:20I am a free American citizen.
32:22I pay taxes
32:23and I have a right to free speech,
32:25liberty,
32:26and pursuit of happiness
32:27and all that stuff.
32:29And I can't talk, eh?
32:30And you stand there and tell me
32:31to get out of my own home
32:32and leave behind all the things I paid for.
32:35I paid for this
32:36and this
32:37and this
32:38and that
32:39and that
32:40and this here
32:41and that
32:42and that
32:46I didn't know your husband
32:47had such a violent temper.
32:48Neither did I.
32:49I shall take steps
32:50to protect you
32:51from any further outbursts.
32:52Oh, thank you.
32:54I think I'll go to my room.
33:02When I got your telegram, Annabee,
33:03I couldn't quite figure it out.
33:05What do you mean
33:06by my being a witness?
33:07What's it all about?
33:08I'm divorcing Henry.
33:10Divorcing Uncle Henry?
33:12Oh, you're not serious.
33:14I never was more serious in my life.
33:16But you two have always been so happy.
33:19Yes.
33:21We were until...
33:23Well, if you must know,
33:25there's another woman.
33:26Oh, I don't believe it.
33:28I can't believe it.
33:30Nevertheless, it's true.
33:32Uncle Henry, a playboy?
33:34It just doesn't make sense.
33:36It doesn't, eh?
33:44If you had a husband
33:45who stayed out all night
33:46and came home
33:47with these in his pocket,
33:49and guilt written all over his face,
33:51perhaps you'd understand
33:52my present frame of mind.
33:53Well, that certainly is a shock.
33:56Oh, what shall I do with these?
33:58Oh, they're Henry's.
33:59I moved them across to the guest room.
34:01I must have forgotten these.
34:02Just take them over to him
34:03and put them in his dresser,
34:04will you please?
34:06The second drawer.
34:08The right-hand corner.
34:15Take them out.
34:16Oh!
34:18I have orders to shoot all intruders.
34:20No trespassing allowed.
34:22Oh, you must be Uncle Henry's keeper.
34:25Something like that.
34:27Well, I'm on the other side of the fence,
34:29so that sort of makes us enemies.
34:31Does it?
34:32Well, can't be compromised
34:33and be sort of friendly enemies.
34:35Why not?
34:36I never quarrel with lawyers.
34:38Oh, I see.
34:39Well, I'm going to have to
34:40have a word with Uncle Henry.
34:42I never quarrel with lawyers.
34:44Hey, how did you know
34:45I was interested in law?
34:46Purely elementary, Watson.
34:47For one thing,
34:48you're wearing a Phi Beta Kappa key,
34:50and you use such words
34:51as compromise and trespass.
34:53Marvellous.
34:54Such deduction, Sherlock.
34:55But I still have some hurdles
34:56to jump before I become
34:57a full-fledged lawyer.
34:58Simple little things like
34:59passing my bar exams
35:00and finding some clients.
35:02And when you do hang out your shingle,
35:03what are you going in for?
35:04Divorce cases?
35:05Uh-uh.
35:06Not me.
35:07I think divorce is,
35:08well, sort of tragic.
35:10I'd rather be the kind of a lawyer
35:11who keeps couples together.
35:12Take this case, for instance.
35:14It's all wrong.
35:15It just doesn't add up.
35:16Gee, I'm glad to hear you say that.
35:17That's the way I see it.
35:19Well, I'd better be getting
35:20back to Aunt Essie.
35:21Say.
35:24How's about telling
35:25the fellow your name?
35:26Jane Forbes.
35:28Forbes.
35:29That's pretty.
35:31I like that.
35:32And yours?
35:35Highly stepped this way.
35:40Miss Forbes,
35:41allow me to present
35:42Mr. Bob Grant.
35:44Charmed, I'm sure.
35:46Oh, the pleasure's all mine.
35:49Well, I'll see you later.
35:51If you won't.
35:56Well, Grant, old man,
35:58it begins to look like
35:59this job has possibilities.
36:05Get on, Bengals.
36:06I can't get you no quicker.
36:09Is this the Butler residence?
36:10Yes.
36:11Well, step aside, eight ball,
36:12and tell Mrs. Butler
36:13that Gooch Mulligan's here.
36:15I'm Miss Butler.
36:16What do you want to see me about?
36:19Well, lady,
36:20I'm a private detective
36:21and a bodyguard.
36:22Mr. Wayne sent me round.
36:23He said I was to protect you
36:24in case that tough guy
36:25you're married to
36:26gets violent again.
36:27He did?
36:28Yes.
36:29Well,
36:30well,
36:31make yourself at home.
36:34Thanks.
36:39Here.
36:41Put it away.
36:43Never mind about that.
36:44I'll take care of it.
36:49Hello, Memphis.
36:50I...
36:52Oh, I beg your pardon.
36:53I thought I was in...
36:54must have been the wrong house.
36:56I thought it was 814.
37:03This is 814.
37:04Hey, what is this,
37:05a game or something?
37:06What do you want?
37:07I want to come in.
37:08This is my home.
37:10Are you Henry Butler?
37:11Yes.
37:12Who are you?
37:13Never mind who I am.
37:15I'm very sorry.
37:22Oh, fresh cake, huh?
37:23Tough, eh?
37:24I guess you got something
37:25I'm going to fix for you.
37:26What have you got for me?
37:29Oh, what...
37:31Oh, just a pipe, huh?
37:33Just my pipe.
37:35Careful.
37:36Look out for that thing.
37:37Look.
37:38Careful with that.
37:39It's loaded.
37:40Look out.
37:41Put it the other way.
37:42Man, look out.
37:43Look out.
37:44That guy's loaded, man.
37:45Let's get out of here.
37:50Tonight?
37:51Oh, now don't tell me
37:52you're going to waste
37:53another perfectly good evening
37:54some old...
37:55Waste another evening?
37:56Do you know of any better way
37:57of getting some easy dough?
37:58And big dough, too.
38:00You may get that fur coat
38:01and a diamond necklace.
38:03And, uh, what about
38:04the honeymoon in Hawaii?
38:05Oh, sure, sure.
38:06Well, just be patient, honey.
38:08You're not giving me
38:09the runaround, are you, Gil?
38:10Runaround?
38:11Well, I mean,
38:12whatever puts such an idea
38:13into your pretty head?
38:14Oh, I don't know.
38:15It's just that you're mixed up
38:16with so many women all the time.
38:17Look.
38:18In the divorce racket,
38:19the smart guy
38:20always represents the woman.
38:21That's where the big dough is.
38:23She gets the cash settlement.
38:24And the bigger the settlement,
38:25the easier it is
38:26to get a good-sized chug of it, see?
38:28Come on, let's have a little smile.
38:30That's more like it.
38:32Look, I want you
38:33to come along with me tonight.
38:34If the old girl has weakened
38:35and won't sign,
38:36I may need your help.
38:37Okay.
38:38At least I'll get
38:39a smell of an idea.
38:42I'm so glad
38:43things turned out this way.
38:44It's much better.
38:45I am, too.
38:46Say, you're all right.
38:47It's a nice place.
38:48Yeah.
38:51Well, I guess
38:52there's nothing I can do here,
38:53so I'll be running along.
38:55Oh, my watch must have stopped.
38:57Have you the time?
38:58Quarter past eight.
39:00Come on, Mr. Butler,
39:01we've got four hours to make here.
39:07I hope I haven't
39:08broken up the game.
39:09Who's winning?
39:10Oh, we just started.
39:11It looks as though
39:12Henry's on the way
39:13to a little slam.
39:14Oh, Don,
39:15we just happen
39:16to have all the cards.
39:17Well, it's pretty hard
39:18to beat someone
39:19who has all the cards,
39:20especially if he knows
39:21how to play them.
39:22That's right.
39:23Is Mr. Butler in?
39:24No, he's not.
39:25Oh, I see.
39:26Is Mr. Butler in?
39:27Yes, ma'am.
39:28Tell him that Evelyn
39:29would like to see him.
39:31Evelyn?
39:32Yes, Evelyn.
39:33Yes, ma'am.
39:37Ah, tell him he was here.
39:41Excuse me, Mr. Butler,
39:42but there's a Miss Evelyn
39:43to see you.
39:45Evelyn?
39:46Yes.
39:47She's right out here
39:48in the hall.
39:50Evelyn, out in the hall?
39:51I don't know any Evelyn.
39:54Excuse me.
39:57Henry, you old darling.
40:01What was the idea
40:02of going home so early
40:03the other night
40:04when the party
40:05was just getting hot?
40:06Why, Evelyn,
40:07you got me mistaken
40:08for somebody else.
40:09I don't know you.
40:10You don't know me?
40:11No.
40:12Why, Henry Butler.
40:15That is a good one.
40:16You don't know me.
40:17Oh, why, lemme pie.
40:20And by the way,
40:21where's my shoe?
40:22What was the idea
40:23of running away with it
40:24in the first place,
40:25you cute little dick and shoe?
40:26Shoe?
40:27We're running away with it.
40:28Well, I don't know
40:29what you're talking about.
40:30Oh, Henry.
40:33Oh.
40:35Sorry, I didn't mean
40:36to get you in trouble.
40:37Just give me my shoe
40:38and I'll run alone.
40:39I tell you,
40:40I haven't got your shoe.
40:41You've got your shoe.
40:42Oh, that's right.
40:43Have it your own way.
40:44But get this, playboy.
40:46The next time,
40:47don't carry a joke so far.
40:48Good night.
40:51Oh.
40:56Oh.
40:58Shoes.
41:02Oh.
41:03That's funny.
41:04She said I had her shoe.
41:06I didn't have her shoe.
41:09I don't know that woman
41:10from Adam.
41:11She's telling me she...
41:13Give me your paper
41:14and your pen.
41:16Oh, Effie.
41:18Uh-oh, here we go again.
41:20You know what you're doing now, Effie.
41:22Is that all?
41:23Yes, thank you.
41:25Evelyn.
41:26I mean, Effie.
41:28Effie.
41:31Effie.
41:32Effie.
41:33Effie.
41:34Where do you think you're going?
41:35You know, things like that depress me.
41:37Well, good night.
41:39Good night.
41:41Say good night to Mrs. Butler for me.
41:43Yes, I will.
41:44Stand aside, sir.
41:45Stand aside if you speak.
41:46Oh, you see,
41:47I want to bust you, huh?
41:49Well, what's your verdict?
41:52Something's rotten in Denmark.
41:54I think so, too.
41:55This is the end, Jane.
41:57Absolutely the end.
41:58Oh, no, Auntie, please.
41:59You can't...
42:00There's no use your talking.
42:01It's as plain as day.
42:02Well, I saw it with my own eyes.
42:04You old darling.
42:05Lambie pie.
42:06You cute little dickens.
42:09You can't argue me out of that.
42:11Butler, are you sure
42:12you don't know this girl?
42:13Try to think.
42:14I don't know her.
42:15I don't know her.
42:16I don't know her.
42:17I don't know this girl.
42:18Try to think.
42:19Think hard.
42:20I don't have to think.
42:21I know.
42:22I tell you,
42:23I never saw her before in my life.
42:24Are you positive?
42:26Don't you think I know
42:27who I know and who I don't know?
42:29Yes, but I...
42:30I tell you,
42:31I never saw that woman before in my life.
42:33Pipe down, you.
42:37I tell you,
42:38I never saw her before in my...
42:39Say, what is this?
42:41Me whispering in my own house.
42:43What am I?
42:44A mice or a man?
42:45He can't stop me from talking to my own wife.
42:47I'm going over there
42:48and clean this whole thing up.
42:56None of that, Pappy.
42:59Well, that's telling him.
43:04I'll bet this isn't the first time.
43:06No wonder Grace Norman gave me that laugh.
43:09I'll bet she knew the whole time that...
43:15Hello?
43:17Oh, hello, Grace.
43:19No, I...
43:20I'm not in the mood for a party tonight.
43:22No, I don't feel...
43:26Who?
43:28He is?
43:29That might be a good idea.
43:34All right, Grace.
43:35All right, goodbye, darling.
43:37Going out?
43:38Yes.
43:39Grace Norman's having a party.
43:41Mr. Wayne will be there.
43:42And I'm going to celebrate my divorce.
43:46And am I going to get tight.
44:08Well, good night, dear.
44:12Oh, excuse me.
44:14Oh, excuse me.
44:15My, you look beautiful.
44:17I want to see you about something.
44:23Don't wait up for me.
44:24I won't be home until morning.
44:34What do I care?
44:35It means nothing to me.
44:37What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
44:45Don't wait up for me.
44:46I may not be back till morning.
44:49And I don't know what morning.
44:53Boy, are they both putting on an act.
44:55Yes, a couple of Pagliacci's.
44:57Oh, God, we had that situation right in the palm of our hand
44:59until Aunt Evelyn came looking for her shoe.
45:02Incidentally, that sounded mighty fishy to me, didn't it to you?
45:05I don't know.
45:06I don't know.
45:07I don't know.
45:08I don't know.
45:09I don't know.
45:10I don't know.
45:11I don't know.
45:12I don't know.
45:13It sounded mighty fishy to me, didn't it to you?
45:15Yes.
45:16But you know Uncle Henry did come home with a shoe in his pocket the other night.
45:19He did?
45:20Certainly.
45:21That's what started the whole thing, didn't you know?
45:23No.
45:24Come in here.
45:30Exhibit A, as you lawyers would say.
45:33What size do you think this is?
45:35Oh, five.
45:36Five and a half.
45:38I wish I had paid more attention to that girl's feet.
45:39Did you notice them?
45:41As a matter of fact, I did.
45:42Well, she's no Cinderella.
45:44That makes it fishier than ever.
45:45I wonder who she is.
45:46Gooch knows who she is.
45:48Huh?
45:49A wise look passed between them.
45:50I caught it.
45:51You've been reading too many detective stories.
45:53I still say Gooch knows her and probably knows where she lives.
45:56That makes it easy.
45:58Perhaps easier than you think.
45:59Another idea?
46:07Are you sure that dog is dead?
46:10Oh, another customer.
46:13I'll be back in a flash.
46:14All right.
46:17Effie, darling.
46:19Hello, Grace.
46:20I'm so glad you decided to come.
46:22It'll do you good.
46:23Gil'll be here in a minute.
46:24He's breaking another date.
46:26Come on and meet the gang.
46:27Hey, gang.
46:29This is Effie Butler.
46:30She won't be using the butler much longer.
46:32You remember Miss Hill and Mr. Thornton.
46:35And you know Dick Gordon.
46:36Hey, Dick, get Effie a drink.
46:37What would you like?
46:38Oh, I'm so glad.
46:39Get her a bourbon and soda.
46:40Oh, no, but I don't...
46:41Hey, Ronnie, come here.
46:42Ronnie, come here.
46:54Hey, what'd you give me?
46:56A bourbon highball.
46:58A what?
46:59A bourbon highball.
47:01Oh.
47:02Oh, that's different, then.
47:04That's a...
47:05Makes a lot of difference.
47:07Makes a lot of difference.
47:12Funny world.
47:13Funny world.
47:14It's a lot of nonsense.
47:15The whole thing's a lot of nonsense.
47:18Everything is a lot of nonsense.
47:21Yeah.
47:23It just doesn't make sense.
47:30And all about a shoe.
47:32It's all about one little shoe.
47:36A little bit of shoe.
47:37Psst.
47:38Don't say anything at all.
47:39Come on.
47:40All right.
47:41No, you don't have to worry about it.
47:42You don't have to care.
47:45You know, there's a solution.
47:47There's a solution.
47:48Don't you tell me.
47:50Don't you tell me.
47:51Let me get it.
47:52I'll get it.
47:53I'll get it.
47:57I got it.
47:58I got it.
47:59Goodbye.
48:00Goodbye.
48:01Take care of yourself, pal.
48:02Take care.
48:03Oh, wrong direction.
48:07Oh, Mr. Gooch.
48:10Yeah?
48:11You're wanted on the phone.
48:17Thanks, lady.
48:21Hello.
48:22Hello.
48:24Hello.
48:28Wasn't nobody there.
48:29Oh, she must have hung up.
48:31Well, didn't she say who she was or nothing?
48:33No.
48:34That's funny.
48:35I got a couple of girls on the string,
48:36but I never gave any of them this number.
48:39There's only one girl I know would have called me here.
48:43Maybe she's the one, pal.
48:53Is this the Royal Arms apartment?
48:57Any apartment number 216?
48:59Nan, did you call me at the butler joint?
49:02No, I didn't.
49:03You think I'm crazy?
49:04Well, somebody called me here, and I thought it was you.
49:07Well, you thought wrong.
49:08It wasn't me.
49:09Goodbye.
49:14Did you get it?
49:15The Royal Arms, apartment 216.
49:22Come in.
49:23Come in.
49:24Come in.
49:25Come in.
49:26Come in.
49:27Come in.
49:28Come in.
49:31Right on time, aren't you, darling?
49:34I'm all ready.
49:36Oh, boy, I can hardly wait till I get on that dance floor.
49:39Seems too good to be true.
49:42What's the matter?
49:43I'm awfully sorry, hon, but I've got to disappoint you.
49:46A business date has just come up.
49:48A business date, huh?
49:49It's a business date, and I mean it.
49:51Well, I don't believe you.
49:52What do you think of that?
49:58I'm through listening to you, fed up with being shoved aside.
50:01You can't tell me you're going on a business date
50:03and get away with it.
50:04Why don't you come clean and tell me
50:05you're rushing one of those rich clients of yours?
50:07How do I know you're not planning to marry one of them?
50:09Give me the air.
50:10You're acting like a fool.
50:11Well, I'm sick of the way you're treating me.
50:13I stay in here night after night while you drag
50:15those rich mamas around nightclubs.
50:16I'm beginning to think that honeymoon of ours
50:18is a fairy tale.
50:19And I'm beginning to get tired of hearing
50:20the same old squawk all the time.
50:21Oh, you are, huh?
50:22Yes.
50:23Well, if you go out that door tonight, all bets are off.
50:25I'm through.
50:26Is that the way you feel about it?
50:28Well, that suits me.
50:59Come in.
51:03You better save that for Wayne.
51:04He might come back, although I doubt it.
51:09What's the idea?
51:10Oh, nothing.
51:11Just checking up.
51:14I wanted to get a few things straightened out.
51:16This little frame-up on Mr. Butler, for instance.
51:18I don't know what you're talking about.
51:20Oh, I think you do.
51:21Now, let's get down to facts.
51:22You're working with Gilbert Wayne on this divorce
51:24recognition.
51:25Crazy.
51:26OK, I'm crazy.
51:27But that gag of the missing shoe didn't ring true to me.
51:30Nevertheless, the fact remains he took it.
51:36When did he take it?
51:37That's my business.
51:38Oh, I see.
51:39And you had to come home on only one shoe, huh?
51:41Yes.
51:42Where is it?
51:43Where's what?
51:44The shoe that you had to hobble home in.
51:46Oh, it's in there.
51:48Let's see it.
51:50All right.
51:58There.
52:00So this is it, huh?
52:01Yes.
52:02You're pretty much of an amateur at this sort of thing,
52:04aren't you?
52:05A smart girl would find out the color of the missing shoe
52:07first, and then do her bluffing.
52:10This is the shoe Mr. Butler brought home.
52:14Mighty poor match, I'd say.
52:16And both from the left foot, too.
52:18All right, wise guy.
52:19It was a first.
52:20It was a first.
52:21It was a first.
52:22It was a first.
52:23It was a first.
52:24It was a first.
52:25All right, wise guy.
52:26It was a frame up.
52:27So what?
52:28So?
52:29Thanks.
52:32You hear that?
52:33Great work, Sherlock.
52:34Elementary, Watson.
52:35Purely elementary.
52:37And which would you like to ride in?
52:39Patrol wagon or a taxi?
52:41OK.
52:42You win.
52:43Let's go.
52:48Carol, you're the one I want.
52:50Listen, Carol, you got me into a mess.
52:52Now you've got to get me out.
52:54You know what I'm going to do?
52:56I'm going to take you home and show my wife.
52:59Come on.
53:00Come on.
53:01Oh.
53:02Oh, excuse me.
53:03Excuse me.
53:04You can't.
53:05Come on, can you?
53:06Come on.
53:07I'll take you everything.
53:10Take you home, and we'll clean up this whole affair.
53:18Take a bite of hay.
53:19Take a bite of hay.
53:21And then we all rode home on the milk wagon in evening clothes,
53:24and we gave the driver $5 to help us deliver the milk.
53:30Uh-oh.
53:31That must be Gil.
53:32Oh.
53:34Well, hello.
53:35Hello.
53:36Come on in.
53:37So sorry to be a little late.
53:38Better late than never.
53:39Looks like you're all the way ahead of me.
53:41Will you excuse me, please?
53:42Go ahead.
53:43Good evening, Mr. Wayne.
53:44Good evening, Mrs. Butler.
53:45You look like a new woman.
53:46I feel like one, too.
53:47Don't believe a word he says.
53:49He tells that to all his clients.
53:50Come on in.
53:51Forward march.
53:56You don't have to worry about these men flirting with you.
53:59I'll protect you.
54:00Go on.
54:01Go on.
54:02Go on.
54:03Go on.
54:04Mind your own business.
54:05Go on, you little flirts.
54:06Come on, Carol.
54:07I'll...
54:08Carol!
54:09Carol!
54:10Come back here!
54:11Come back here!
54:16Hello?
54:17Cleveland headquarters?
54:18Are you fellas still looking for a lawyer
54:19by the name of George Wilson in connection
54:21with the divorce racket?
54:23Well, he's here pulling the same stuff.
54:26Yeah.
54:27Got a fancy name, Gilbert Wayne.
54:30Tie that, will you?
54:32You want us to pick him up for you?
54:34OK, call you back.
54:36Your boyfriend gets around, doesn't he?
54:39Boston, Miami, Cleveland?
54:41Any idea where he is right now?
54:43No, but wherever he is, I'll bet Mrs. Butler is with him.
54:46In that case, I suggest you call Mrs. Grace Norman.
54:51Yeah, this is my home.
54:53It was.
54:55Well, I guess everybody's going to bed.
54:57Come on, we'll go upstairs and make a move.
55:00Yeah, everybody's going to bed.
55:03Well, it's a little late.
55:08Now watch yourself.
55:09Now watch yourself.
55:10I know you're tired.
55:12Put yourself together.
55:13Now all I want you to do, Carol,
55:15is explain everything to my wife,
55:17and then you can go home.
55:19Get the idea?
55:21Come on, now, come on.
55:22Up she goes.
55:23Up she daisy, whoopsie-woosie,
55:26wowsie-wowsie, a-shoosie-woosie.
55:28Thanks very much.
55:30Goodbye.
55:31He was there, but he just left.
55:33He's taking Mrs. Butler home.
55:34I think we'll give the gentleman a little surprise.
55:37O'Connor!
55:38Dombroski!
55:39O'Connor!
55:40Dombroski!
55:48Oh, what a party.
55:51Still is as far as I can see.
55:54Good evening, Mr. Wilson.
55:56My name is not Wilson.
55:58You can tell that to the judge in Boston, or Miami,
56:00or Cleveland.
56:01Take your choice.
56:03Officer, what is this all about?
56:05That's Mr. Wayne's past catching up with him, Aunt Effie.
56:08Seems you're not the only victim of his little racket,
56:10Mrs. Butler.
56:11Racket?
56:12You remember Evelyn and her little shoe?
56:14That was one of Mr. Wayne's little tricks.
56:16That's right, Mrs. Butler.
56:17Why, you dirty little chiseler.
56:18Oh, the shoe's on the other foot, Gil,
56:20and you're going to get it right.
56:21Come on, you, get going.
56:22You got a long train ride ahead of you.
56:29I'm sorry for everything I did tonight, Mrs. Butler,
56:32except that.
56:33But if you ask me, I think we're both well rid of a big
56:36headache.
56:37Dear, I don't seem to see what this is all about.
56:42Well, what's my next move?
56:44Why, you've never been in Boston, Cleveland, or Miami,
56:46have you?
56:47No.
56:48Well, then, forget about it.
56:49Thank you very much.
56:50Oh, I almost forgot.
56:52The wrong one.
56:54There's no use breaking up a pair.
56:55Thanks.
56:56You're welcome.
56:57Good night.
56:58Good night.
57:01To think that I ever mistrusted him.
57:03Now, Auntie, all you have to do is go upstairs
57:05and tell him you're sorry.
57:06Sure, Mrs. Butler.
57:07That's all there is to it.
57:08Oh, I hope you're right, Bob.
57:09But I...
57:13But he still hasn't told me where this came from,
57:15the night of our wedding anniversary.
57:16Auntie, now, don't get excited again.
57:18Take it easy.
57:19Don't worry about a thing, because I'm...
57:21I'm...
57:22Oh, I don't worry about anything.
57:25I'll take care of it.
57:27I'm sure he can explain it.
57:28Yes, just give him a chance.
57:30Just one step, you little...
57:32Easy now, easy, easy.
57:35Oh!
57:36Sorry, I'm awfully sorry this happened,
57:38but you know how things are.
57:40When you're not ready...
57:42Hi there, folks.
57:44Oh!
57:46Henry Butler.
57:47Oh, honey, I want you to meet Carol
57:49from Max Wexworth's.
57:51Oh?
57:52Yeah, Carol, this is my wife.
57:55Hey, that's what we've been looking for.
57:56Give me, give me, give me, give me.
57:59There you are.
58:01One, two.
58:02That's what I've been trying to tell you
58:04all the time, honey.
58:05Come here, come here.
58:06Quick, quick, quick, quick.
58:07Now we start right from the beginning.
58:09Oh, no, I don't want to hear anything.
58:11And I was carrying over to put her on the bed.
58:14And she slipped and fell and was what,
58:16there on the bed,
58:17and there was a big gasp
58:18down the side of her head.
58:19She's dying.
58:20So I picked her up and told Max,
58:21Max said he'd fix her up
58:22so that they wouldn't have to do it again.
58:25So, on the way home,
58:28I told him,
58:29Hang on a second, honey.
