00:00An Israeli politician causing an uproar over the deadly war the nation is waging in Gaza.
00:05In a revealing quote, he laid bare what the IDF seems to have as its, quote, hobby.
00:11Israel is on the path to becoming a pariah state among the nations,
00:15like the South Africa of old, if it does not return to behaving like a sane country.
00:20A sane country does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies for a hobby,
00:25and does not set goals involving the expulsion of populations.
00:30Well, emotions are running high in Israel after a former IDF general and prominent opposition leader
00:35gave a scathing interview on local radio,
00:38warning that Israel is on the path to becoming a global pariah,
00:42comparing it to apartheid-era South Africa.
00:46Yair Golan accused the government of losing its sanity in waging war,
00:50not just on Hamas, but on civilians.
00:52You have just heard, he even claimed Israel was killing babies as a hobby.
00:57Within hours, no surprise, outrage exploded across the political spectrum.
01:02An Israel defense minister called the remarks at his grace and said Golan had crossed a dangerous line.
01:09National security minister accused him of echoing Hamas propaganda,
01:12and other ministers demanded he be banned from public life.
01:16Prime Minister Netanyahu called it a blood libel.
01:19The IDF is the most moral army in the world,
01:24and our soldiers are fighting in a campaign for our very existence.
01:28While we are waging a multi-front war and are leading complex diplomatic efforts
01:32to free our hostages and defeat Hamas,
01:35Golan and his friends on the radical left are echoing the most contemptible anti-Semitic blood libels
01:40against IDF soldiers in the state of Israel.
01:43Well, the IDF chief of staff also issued a rare political statement saying the army condemns any claim
01:49that casts doubt on the ethics of IDF operations.
01:53Golan tried to walk it back somehow,
01:55saying his criticism was aimed at the government uniquely, but not the army.
02:00The damage was done.
02:01It was too late.
02:02Some reactions were even more extreme.
02:04One came from a former deputy speaker of the Knesset,
02:07Israeli parliament, now head of Israel's far-right Identity Party,
02:11who openly called for intensifying military pressure in Gaza, fighting every child.
02:18Every child, every baby in Gaza is an enemy.
02:22We need to colonize Gaza and not leave a single child there.
02:26There's no other victory.
02:28And while such rhetoric could be shocking, it's hardly new, I have to say.
02:32Just last week, an Israeli reservist doctor made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
02:37In a now-deleted post on social media, he referred to Palestinians in Gaza as cockroaches.
02:44Yesterday, the guys from the battalion killed dozens of terrorists.
02:48I applied to participate in assassinations as a doctor in preventive medicine.
02:53One of the medics corrected me and said,
02:55this is in the framework of the NHS, the acronym for public health.
03:00On second thought, he's right.
03:01It's about killing bugs and other insects.
03:04Well, the Israeli Medical Association condemned the remarks
03:08and launched an ethics probe reminding that a doctor's role is to save lives, not take them.
03:14But I have to say that in today's Israel, comments like this barely surprise anymore.
03:19When political discourse becomes this extreme, when hatred becomes normalized,
03:24it's no wonder that even doctors sometimes echo the language of extermination.
03:28And such statements are heard at the time when Israel continues its bombardment, heavy bombardment of Gaza.
03:35Local health ministry reports dozens killed every day.
03:39And also, the humanitarian blockade has stretched for almost three months now.
03:44No food, no fuel, no medicine has been allowed in since March.
03:48A situation the UN has repeatedly called catastrophic.
03:52Netanyahu, and to heavy US pressure that he, by the way, admitted earlier, agreed to a so-called limited aid deal.
03:59And the result?
04:00Just five trucks entered Gaza on Monday.
04:03Obviously, international patience is wearing thin.
04:08The UK, France, and Canada have warned of concrete action, potentially maybe even sanctions, if Israel expands its operations further.
04:17And even Israel's closest allies pulling back.
04:20As you remember, last week, Donald Trump skipped Israel on his Middle East tour.
04:24Before that, the U.S. Secretary of Defense canceled his visit to Jerusalem.
04:29And now, American Vice President has also called off a planned trip, reportedly due to concerns of a growing international backlash.
04:39But on some more serious things, like how do we provide security?
04:43How do we make sure that we get all the assets that we need in order to do the right official delegation?
04:48So, I'm sure we'll visit Israel sometime in the future, but not today.
04:51Well, publicly, Israel and the U.S. insist it's business as usual, but the cracks are showing, and it's obvious.
04:58With growing pressure from all sides, maybe Yair Golan's words that we have heard before hit too close to home,
05:05and maybe that's exactly the reason why they caused such fury in Israel.
