00:00Carissa Fair had the perfect look for a playboy in the 2000s.
00:06Quintessential girl next door.
00:08And that's what they liked.
00:11But she was definitely out of her element.
00:15She seemed like the type of woman who could be easily influenced by others.
00:21She's about to launch this huge career.
00:25And now all of a sudden you have homicide detectives trying to talk to you.
00:29Nobody knew a thing.
00:31She just disappeared.
00:34This was definitely the most complicated case that I've ever covered.
00:40If you can see the hair on my arms are standing up right now.
00:43Things just keep getting more and more outlandish.
00:47It was just, what the hell is going on?
01:00Five people have been murdered and butchered.
01:05And police have arrested the lead suspect.
01:10Who is by all accounts a mystery man.
01:14But then he decided that he wanted to sell his story.
01:20And so he started writing letters from jail.
01:26And he targeted Playboy.
01:30Because his ex-girlfriend Carrie was in that month's issue.
01:35So naturally authorities very much wanted to track her down.
01:42We're trying to identify the entire picture as to what all took place.
01:46And if Carrie was involved with him in an intimate relationship.
01:49We definitely thought she had some information or was potentially involved.
01:55Ultimately they locate her.
01:58And she's in Las Vegas on a promotional event.
02:02Because Carrie it turns out is now Carissa Fair.
02:06The Playboy Magazine September Playmate of the Month.
02:10Playboy Magazine September Playmate of the Month
02:17Carissa Fair and I came to L.A. around the same time.
02:23She was a playmate before I came to Playboy but only slightly.
02:27It was the year 2000.
02:30Playboy was really at the top of its game.
02:33Every young woman wanted to be in Playboy.
02:37And it just seemed like a really magical place to start your career.
02:47I'm Irina Voronina, Miss January 2001.
02:51Carissa was one of the first playmates I ever met in Los Angeles.
02:57She was a typical Californian girl.
03:00She enjoyed the beach, she enjoyed the outdoors.
03:03And she was always smiling.
03:07We got Carissa Fair.
03:10Carissa was one of the contestants on Win Ben Stein's Money.
03:13And watching the footage of her I can just see that she's like Playboy's ideal playmate.
03:18What month are you?
03:19I'm Miss September 2000.
03:24I was Miss April 2001.
03:27I remember when I first met Carissa.
03:30I really thought she had like a Nicole Kidman vibe.
03:34Because she had this beautiful sort of like strawberry blonde hair.
03:38She had very fair skin and a naturally beautiful face.
03:41And she was tall.
03:44She was a little bit shy but super, super sweet.
03:51I found out she is actually from Southern California, Riverside.
03:56And she grew up in a one-parent household.
03:59And basically kind of raised herself.
04:02And I think when you grow up really fast like that, you do want to live a large life.
04:13The early 2000s was a really special time for Playboy.
04:16The brand was very mainstream.
04:18And we're here at the Playboy Mansion.
04:20We've seen all these stars from the 90s.
04:23Like Jenny McCarthy, Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra.
04:28From the magazine and go on to these exciting careers.
04:33Carissa wanted to model and act.
04:35She was definitely embracing opportunities.
04:38In what city is the Pentagon located?
04:41Washington D.C.
04:42Washington D.C.?
04:43No.
04:44But I feel like she was definitely out of her element.
04:49Carissa Fair was not her real name.
04:52I remember calling her Carrie.
04:59Her boyfriend sent in her pictures to Playboy.
05:04Because she didn't really believe in herself all that much.
05:09Nobody really knew about the relationship.
05:12But he believed in her.
05:15Carissa was chosen to be a Playmate.
05:18And in May of 2000, she shared with me that she got her month,
05:24which will be September of 2000.
05:27And she was super excited.
05:33It was a very competitive time.
05:35Because there was a very special search for a Millennium Playmate.
05:40So it must have felt a little bit like winning the lottery.
05:45Carissa's centerfold shoot had something in the bedroom set up.
05:51Like she was in her beautiful apartment.
05:54With some tasteful lingerie and satin sheets.
05:58It was very sexy.
06:02Looking at Carissa's pictorial, she is just very much the quintessential girl next door.
06:07She's really beautiful.
06:09She's got a great body.
06:11She's very voluptuous.
06:12A really pretty face.
06:14She looks shy, but inviting at the same time.
06:18I think Carissa was very happy with her centerfold and the Playboy shoot in general.
06:26And she was very grateful to be there.
06:32The 2000 Playmates, they got to do so much cool stuff.
06:37They got to do Betsy Johnson fashion shows.
06:42They got a layout in W Magazine.
06:45They got a layout in W Magazine.
06:48When I saw the layout of all the Playmates in W, I was like,
06:52these are the most beautiful girls in the world.
06:56And Carissa was one of them.
07:02For a new girl coming into Playboy at the time, there's an endless potential for opportunity.
07:08I spent the entire summer of 2000 out in Los Angeles, hanging out in Hef's inner circle.
07:15One day you're going to go and meet Madonna, or you're going to have tea at Rod Stewart's house.
07:21Which, those things actually did happen.
07:24But I don't have many pictures with Carissa.
07:27She was one of the young ladies that passed through for a very, very brief time.
07:32She didn't hang around Playboy Mansion that much, which was very strange,
07:37because I was staying at the mansion during my shoots,
07:40and I was invited out with Mr. Hefner practically every night.
07:45But Carissa had a place of her own in Los Angeles.
07:50She was driving a modest car, like a Honda Civic,
07:55which is not very likely for a girl who's a Playboy Playmate.
07:58So, I knew she didn't have anyone paying her bills.
08:01It was actually very refreshing, because she was different.
08:10I feel like she was kind of somebody who showed up, did what she had to do.
08:14Everybody really liked her, she was easy to get along with.
08:17But people felt like she had secrets and, you know, things she didn't want to talk about.
08:21A lot of playmates, you know, we had horrible childhood and abusive relationships.
08:26But she didn't want to talk about it or share certain things.
08:32She seemed like the type of woman who could be easily influenced by others
08:37and fallen into a situation where someone was taking advantage of her.
08:44She was a very, very open person.
08:47Carrie was described as kind of an enigma.
08:50She was introverted.
08:53But when your issue of Playboy comes out, all of a sudden you're the center of attention.
09:01You do your centerfold tour, which is where you go around to different cities
09:06and people are bringing magazines to you and they just want you to autograph it.
09:11This was her time to milk it and enjoy it, to be the center of attention,
09:16to be the beautiful self.
09:19And guess what?
09:21Police showed up.
09:27She's about to launch this huge career.
09:30And now all of a sudden, she's the center of attention.
09:35She's about to launch this huge career.
09:38And now all of a sudden you have homicide detectives trying to talk to you about multiple murders.
09:47I think that that would frighten anyone.
09:51And then she just disappeared.
09:56I was like, whatever happened to that Nicole Kidman-looking centerfold named Carissa Fair?
10:01Where did she go?
10:03Nobody knew a thing.
10:09I'm Carrie Mendoza, Playboy Centerfold Miss September 2000.
10:14It's hard for me to believe what I lived through.
10:17And I want to tell my story.
10:27Playboy was my only ray of hope that gave me strength.
10:32I had run away, I changed my name.
10:36So when the detectives came to Vegas to interview me, I was very scared.
10:42And that really changed everything.
10:55I grew up like a very tomboy.
10:58With just my dad and my brother.
11:01My mom left when I was one.
11:04So all I did was focus on school to get out of the house because I wanted to be on my own.
11:10I even graduated early in high school.
11:14And then I had met somebody and we moved in together.
11:24But it was an abusive relationship.
11:28If you didn't have a happy upbringing, you just end up dating, you know, the first guy who tells you that you're pretty.
11:36I think a lot of playmates come from history of abusive relationships.
11:42I had to get away from him.
11:44But every time I tried to leave, he found me.
11:47He would stalk me.
11:49He found out where I worked.
11:51He popped my tires on my car.
11:54My dad's all, you need to disappear.
11:56So I literally packed up all my stuff and went to San Francisco.
12:10I didn't know anybody in San Francisco.
12:13I just needed to move far away.
12:17I was 21.
12:19And that's when I started working at a cocktail lounge.
12:23And that's where I met Taylor.
12:29Taylor Helzer was about six years older than her and charming and very successful.
12:35And drew the eye of everybody when he walked into her room.
12:41He was a stockbroker for Jane Winter and he would come in there in a suit and tie
12:46and have shots and was just this very vibrant, outgoing person.
12:53One time he actually left his credit card and said,
12:57that was my tip, he wanted me to buy something nice so he could take me out dancing.
13:01And I was, you know, flattered.
13:04But I said, I would love to go out with you, but I'm not going to use your credit card.
13:09And he took me out dancing.
13:11Taylor was different because he was, how can I say this?
13:16He wasn't about having sex with me.
13:19It was about getting to know me.
13:22And he just always was happy.
13:25And I wasn't used to being around people who were always happy.
13:29I didn't grow up in a house where we said I love you and we were affectionate.
13:32He was very affectionate and it was different for me.
13:35Kind of like showing me a different way of life.
13:40Taylor was raised in an observant Mormon family.
13:44He was the oldest of three, Glenn Taylor Helzer.
13:48From the beginning, he went by his middle name.
13:51He was the family's shining star.
13:54He was very much looked up to within his local church.
13:59He was very much respected.
14:01He was very much looked up to within his local church
14:05because he was so successful at evangelizing.
14:10But he was very, very unhappy.
14:13And eventually he leaves.
14:19He moves in with his little brother, Justin.
14:21And eventually, Carrie.
14:24And starts living the kind of life that he believes he should be able to live.
14:32He wanted to try new things in life, like go to clubs.
14:36And that was forbidden.
14:38And things I had never done before either.
14:41He experimented with drugs and I experimented with them.
14:46My first time I ever did drugs, he said, here's aspirin for your headache.
14:50And it was ecstasy.
14:52I didn't have a headache and I didn't know that I was even taking ecstasy.
15:02I didn't have the opportunity to say no, I didn't want to take a drug.
15:05But because of the way that ecstasy affected me,
15:09I got over it quickly because it was amazing.
15:13They couldn't get enough.
15:18As their relationship progresses, Taylor starts to have plans.
15:26He was starting to act different.
15:28He was trying to scam his job.
15:32So he didn't have to go to work anymore and he could just collect disability.
15:35And he's conjuring up all these weird schemes and things that he wants to do.
15:40And so he was going down a different path that I was not, that wasn't me.
15:48He quits his stockbroker job.
15:51He quits his stockbroker job.
15:53And it is this turn that really starts to have an effect on their relationship and on Carrie.
16:04Because one of Taylor's moneymaking schemes was to try and pitch Carrie for Playboy.
16:17He wanted them to do some like escort service.
16:20He thought if I was going to get into Playboy, I could talk the girls into it.
16:25Taylor's plan might sound crazy to an outsider,
16:28but believe it or not, there were, you know, high class escort agencies
16:32who did use girlfriends of hats or playmates.
16:37So it's not inconceivable.
16:40It had already been a year that we had been together.
16:43I didn't have stability until I met Taylor.
16:46So I was pretty much did whatever Taylor would say.
16:51So I paid to get my boobs done.
16:56And I sent pictures in.
17:00I took him in my front yard. Taylor took him.
17:02And I still had scars when I sent my pictures in.
17:10I did not think I was going to get into Playboy.
17:15But after I had my surgery done, it changed me.
17:21I was starting to feel more independent.
17:23Like maybe I wanted to venture out without Taylor.
17:26And my relationship with Taylor was rocky at this time.
17:31It was starting to get controlling.
17:34He was taking crazy medications like Klonopin and mixing them with alcohol.
17:38And was acting weird.
17:41I was like, I really don't know this person because he's changed so much.
17:45I think the shift was gradual.
17:48Instead of evangelizing for the church,
17:51Taylor started saying that he's the one who should be in charge of the Mormon church.
17:57That the current church leadership and church elders were not good enough.
18:02Slowly coming to the belief that this was his path.
18:06And things just keep getting more and more outlandish.
18:09Taylor was not Taylor anymore.
18:11He was talking about religion.
18:13He was talking about how he was a prophet of God.
18:15And that he wanted to extort money from clients.
18:17From Dean Witter.
18:18And that this is what God wants him to do.
18:21And I did not like the things he was talking about.
18:23I did not like the disability thing.
18:25I did not want to be consumed by drugs 24-7.
18:30Now we were also selling drugs.
18:33I was seeing darkness in him.
18:35And it wasn't a healthy relationship anymore.
18:37It was scary.
18:39And I wanted out, but I felt like I have nowhere to go.
18:43Being in abusive relationships can do a number on your self-esteem.
18:47But Playboy could definitely be a way out.
18:52When I opened up my P.O. box and saw the letter from Playboy.
18:57I thought maybe it was a, thanks for your submission, but we're not interested.
19:00But it was the complete opposite.
19:02It was, we would love to have you do some test shots.
19:07They wanted to see more of me, and I was excited.
19:11Because I wanted to move on without Taylor.
19:16But I didn't feel he was going to let me go.
19:19And I got really depressed.
19:21And he saw that.
19:23He saw that I was going through a lot.
19:26He saw that I was going through a lot.
19:29And he saw that and said, I know what you're doing.
19:33I know you don't want to be here, so just go.
19:36And I literally like grabbed my cat and whatever I could fit in my car and I left.
19:42Like I was gone like in 20 minutes.
19:45She was away from Taylor.
19:49And that was absolutely not in Taylor's plan.
19:59I was really excited to get down to Southern California to do these test shots for Playboy.
20:04So I rented a place.
20:06I had a roommate.
20:08And I worked for a nightclub.
20:10I was a server there.
20:12And I felt free of Taylor.
20:14I felt free of the chaos.
20:17And when they took my pictures, they said, this very rarely happens, but you're going to do it.
20:22And I was like, okay.
20:24And when they took my pictures, they said, this very rarely happens, but you're in the magazine.
20:29This is going to be your centerfold.
20:31Like you're going to be Miss September.
20:34Carrie had the perfect look for a Playmate in the 2000s.
20:38She didn't wear a lot of makeup, very fresh face, kind of like a blank canvas.
20:42And that's what they loved.
20:47Doing Playboy was huge because they were the first people to ever put makeup on me.
20:51Even the pictures I sent in the mail, I wasn't even wearing any makeup.
20:56So when they turned me around in the chair, I was like, who is that?
21:00I felt like I was playing a role.
21:02Christopher was my character for Playboy.
21:05It's somewhat common for women to want to use a different name when they post for Playboy.
21:10You're kind of getting this new image, and you can use that to start a new life.
21:15It was definitely more than what I expected.
21:18I did not know there was a contract for two years.
21:22Or how much more exposure you can get.
21:28Hef knew who I was, and I was shocked.
21:31He was the first one to show me my magazine when it was all finished.
21:35And it was so exciting. He took me to his office and showed me the magazine.
21:38And I was like, oh my God, this is really happening.
21:41And then one day, Taylor shows up at my job, unexpected, and scared the crap out of me.
21:52When you become a Playboy Playmate, some ex-boyfriends come out of the woodwork.
21:58I've seen it so much.
22:00And quite honestly, I was not aware about the awful relationship she was in.
22:06I think he was hoping she would come back, and he could start his crazy business plan.
22:12I felt very scared, because I was basically rebelling in his eyes.
22:16I did not know why he came, but I felt like I needed to do whatever he wanted, because I wanted him to leave.
22:23So he gave me ecstasy, and we went to the beach.
22:26And that's pretty much all I really remember.
22:29There was really no getting around how charming Taylor was, and how manipulative.
22:35And how good at being manipulative he was.
22:40I told Hef, and Hef said, I'm going to do it.
22:47He said, I'm going to do it.
22:50And I said, I'm going to do it.
22:52how good at being manipulative he was.
22:56I told Hef, and Hef was worried about me,
22:59so he said, I'm gonna make sure
23:00that you're not gonna be in one place
23:01for more than two days.
23:04I was all over doing promotions.
23:06I went to Chicago.
23:09I was in Texas.
23:10I was in all parts of California.
23:15I lived out of a bag for weeks.
23:16I went to different places every two days.
23:19There wasn't really any protocol for playmates
23:21who might be having a problem with a stalker
23:24or with a significant other or an ex.
23:28But Hef promised to keep her as busy as possible
23:32so she wasn't in the same place all the time.
23:35I think the Dorothy Stratton tragedy
23:38definitely played a role in Hef wanting
23:39to help out the playmates that he could
23:42if they felt like they were in danger
23:44because it was such a tragic situation.
23:47Because it was such a tragedy that was not forgotten.
23:51And I think the fact that Carrie's issue release party
23:54was in Vegas really speaks to that
23:56because usually a playmate's issue release
23:58would be in their hometown
24:00because that would get a lot of publicity.
24:02Hometown Girl poses nude,
24:04so that's almost always what it was.
24:05And there was a little bit.
24:07But she was from Riverside, not Las Vegas.
24:10I went to Vegas and that's when I turn on the news.
24:13Selina Bishop was one of those folks
24:14you just couldn't miss.
24:16And I see that Taylor's on the news.
24:20They were calling him by his first name,
24:22Glenn Helzer, and asking the public
24:25if they had any information.
24:27Locals recently began seeing her with Glenn Helzer,
24:30her boyfriend, who is now a suspect.
24:33I'm over here, and I'm like,
24:35oh my God, what's going on?
24:37I'm over here just in shock.
24:43I did not know what had happened,
24:47but I knew he was capable of doing almost anything.
25:00I was a reporter for the Contra Costa Times.
25:03We covered the news of the murder of a woman
25:06We covered the entire East Bay.
25:09We became aware in the early morning hours of August 3rd,
25:13a terrified homeowner calls 911,
25:17gets ahold of the Marin County Sheriff's Office,
25:21and says there have been shots fired.
25:23I have a studio apartment in my basement
25:26that I rent out, and I think that it happened down there.
25:32I was advised that there was a homicide,
25:33and was asked to respond to the scene.
25:36We actually found that there was two people
25:38that appeared to be deceased,
25:40a Jennifer Villarin and a James Gamble,
25:43as well as nine military bullet casings.
25:49It turns out the woman who actually lives in the apartment
25:52is a 22-year-old named Selina Bishop.
25:55She's not there, but the two victims inside
25:58appear to be Selina's mother and the mother's companion.
26:02So we needed to try and locate Selina.
26:07Right off the bat, the Marin Sheriff's detectives
26:10were extremely worried about Selina Bishop.
26:15It was just a fluke that it was Jenny and Jim there
26:18that night, so they were not sure
26:21if Selina had been the actual intended target,
26:25and that concern only grew over the course of the weekend.
26:32The next significant piece of the investigation
26:35is that Selina doesn't show up for work
26:37that following Monday.
26:39Selina worked at the Two Bird Cafe.
26:41Everyone said, oh, well, right now,
26:43she's camping in Yosemite with her boyfriend,
26:45who she's been dating since May,
26:48and no one really knows much about him.
26:52What they know is that the mysterious boyfriend
26:54lives with his brother, Justin, and incredibly,
26:59co-workers find her pager, and when
27:03the police are going through the pager,
27:05they find the name Justin Helzer.
27:10From there, what we did is we obtained some photographs
27:12from the Department of Motor Vehicles
27:14of Justin and his brother, who we identified
27:18as Glenn Taylor Helzer.
27:22And we took those photographs, and we
27:23showed them to a few people.
27:25And they recognized Selina's boyfriend
27:27as being Glenn Taylor Helzer, also known as Taylor.
27:35So the cops decide they're going to go over
27:37to Taylor and Justin's house and pick up
27:39the investigation there.
27:44They go inside the house, and they find Taylor
27:47and his brother, Justin, and they
27:49find a picture of Glenn Taylor Helzer.
27:54The third person, a woman, her name is Dawn,
27:57and she's a roommate.
27:59And something's up.
28:03Much like if you could see the hair on my arms
28:05are standing up right now, at that time,
28:07we're fairly certain that something horrific
28:10had taken place at the house.
28:13They're finding news clippings about Selina's disappearance.
28:18They find drugs.
28:20During that search, I noticed some financial documents
28:23that were not related to either Dawn, Justin, or Taylor.
28:28And as I'm looking at them, I literally said,
28:31who are Ivan and Annette Steinman,
28:33and why do they have this paperwork?
28:35And there was a Concord Police Department officer
28:37standing at the doorway.
28:38And his head literally swung to the side and looked at me.
28:41He said that they were in the process
28:42of working a missing persons case related
28:44to an Ivan and Annette Steinman.
28:48The fact that the Steinmans are missing,
28:50and that this paperwork is showing up
28:52in a location for a suspect
28:54on an entirely different murder case,
28:56is gonna get everybody's attention.
29:00You just can't stop thinking, what could be next?
29:07And then I was told that a bag was located
29:10on the McCallamy River that contained body parts
29:15that were ultimately identified as belonging
29:18to Ivan and Annette Steinman and Selina Bishop.
29:23At this point, the Helsers and Dawn get arrested.
29:27They can hook them up for the drugs,
29:28so they do that right away.
29:30Once the three of them were arrested, no one talked.
29:36As Marin and Concord investigators dig in to this case,
29:41one more name that kept coming up was Carrie Furman.
29:46And she was that month's playboy centerfold.
29:51We had learned by talking to people
29:52that Carrie had dated Taylor
29:54up until about February of 2000,
29:58just a couple of months of when this took place.
30:01So we attempted to make contact with Carrie.
30:05Carissa was in Vegas promoting her issue,
30:08and I can't even imagine what it's like
30:11to find out that your ex-boyfriend could be a serial killer
30:17while you're trying to celebrate
30:19your biggest moment in life.
30:23When the police came, I felt like they were looking at me
30:25like I had some involvement or I helped them in some way.
30:29When we're looking at investigations like this,
30:31everybody is a possible person involved
30:34with the investigation.
30:36And my impression was that she was a scared young woman,
30:40and potentially she was involved in some fashion.
30:44We just didn't know to what extent.
30:54It's hard to be so closely connected
30:56with something as tragic as what happened.
31:01Taylor was arrested, and within days,
31:04detectives came to Vegas to interview me.
31:08I can't even really remember the whole interview
31:10because it was so traumatic.
31:14We made a deal with the district attorney
31:17that anything that we had found out
31:18would not be used against her.
31:24So at that point, we really went into detail.
31:28And she started to open up.
31:30They wanted a profile of Taylor
31:31and how he went from a stockbroker to the things he did.
31:37I block a lot of things out.
31:39So I can't even tell you.
31:42All I know is the way that Taylor got me to do things.
31:46I knew how persuasive he was, and that scared me.
31:50So as we started to learn that Taylor had this grandiose
31:54idea of essentially taking over the Mormon church
31:58for lack of better terms,
31:59he thought that he was a prophet of God,
32:01and his intent was to bring everybody
32:03into his belief system.
32:05Taylor starts talking about how he's gonna bring peace
32:09and love to the world through all of these
32:12completely bonkers ideas, importing women from Brazil
32:17to become high-end prostitutes, starting a drug ring,
32:22all sorts of things to make money.
32:25People would describe Taylor as sort of like a cult leader,
32:28the way he would try to control people.
32:30And it was all incredible.
32:31He was a very, very, very, very, very, very,
32:34and it was all incredibly, incredibly toxic.
32:40Carrie's relationship with Taylor resulted
32:43in her helping him in some of his money-making schemes.
32:47Among those was an incident where she was with him
32:50in Mexico when they purchased Rohypnol, a date-rape drug.
32:54I really was kind of just going along
32:59with what he was saying,
33:00but not realizing why he wanted it.
33:03We started to think this is why she was concerned,
33:05is because she had provided some money to him
33:08to purchase drugs.
33:10But in talking with Carrie over multiple different times,
33:12she was not aware of the violent side of Taylor
33:16because she chose to depart.
33:20Taylor never talked about murder.
33:22For him to be able to snap and choose to do that,
33:27I don't know who that is.
33:29And I don't know if somebody who can feel
33:31that they're a prophet could do that.
33:34This was definitely the most complicated case
33:39that I've ever covered.
33:40As far as Taylor went and why these five people were killed
33:46was actually not something that was answered
33:49until several years later
33:52when Don Godman decided to cooperate.
33:56After Carrie made the choice to branch away
33:58in February of 2000,
34:01that's when Don Godman was brought in.
34:05Taylor saw me as being this lost, innocent girl
34:09that he could brainwash and mold into whatever he wanted.
34:13But I left.
34:15And I wasn't there when Don came into the group,
34:17but I had met Don through Justin first.
34:20She had a son and Taylor paid a lot of attention to her.
34:23And I think that's what she liked.
34:26I feel that Justin was definitely forced
34:28to do the things that he did.
34:31Taylor considered himself a prophet
34:33and his brother in Don, he considered disciples.
34:36Taylor's plans involve a lot of things that he has to do,
34:41including murder, but he's doing it in his mind
34:44at the direction of God.
34:45And that's how he justifies doing all
34:47of the crazy things he does.
34:49He dubbed the three of them, the children of thunder.
34:54And that comes from the biblical sons of thunder,
34:58which was what Jesus called the inner core of his apostles.
35:03And the plan that Taylor called Transform America
35:07was going to bring in Christ's second coming.
35:12In order to put it into play, he needed money.
35:17And none of his schemes were successful.
35:22So that was when he thought of his old job
35:26as a stockbroker and he targets assignments
35:30and their retirement savings.
35:33So they prepared everything that they would need.
35:38And we know all this because Don kept all the receipts.
35:44And one of the final pieces of the plan
35:49was finding someone to help launder the money.
35:52So he actively went looking at raves
35:55for a naive young woman who he could charm
35:59into doing what he needed done.
36:03And that May he met Selina Bishop.
36:09Everything was about money.
36:13They went to the Steinmans who they kidnapped
36:16to obtain their funds.
36:19Taylor abducts the Steinmans at gunpoint.
36:24They get fed Rohypnol.
36:26And under the influence of Rohypnol,
36:28the Steinmans are forced to write two checks
36:31for $100,000 to Selina Bishop.
36:40After the checks were written,
36:41Mr. Steinman was murdered by having his head
36:44bashed into the tile floor.
36:50And Mrs. Steinman had her throat slit.
36:55And then the two brothers and Don thanked God
37:00for the sacrifice the Steinmans made.
37:06At that time, Taylor picks up Selina
37:09for what is going to be their final date, unbeknownst to her.
37:14He was using a Selina to open an account
37:16so that it wasn't linked to Taylor Helzer.
37:19Selina didn't realize that the relationship
37:21was fake from start to finish.
37:25Where he kills her and dismembers her
37:27along with the Steinmans.
37:35Then they had to find a way to eliminate Selina's mother
37:39who had met him.
37:42And so they went to Woodacre and murdered her.
37:44And unfortunately, her boyfriend happened to be there.
37:49Taylor tells people that his goal is to save humanity.
37:52Now how that involves a bunch of dead bodies
37:56is unexplainable.
37:59Kerry was never connected to any of the crimes.
38:02There was a thought that maybe the rehypnol
38:05that was purchased utilizing Kerry's funds
38:07may have been used with Ivan and Ms. Steinman.
38:10But we weren't able to identify that.
38:13She didn't know that he had started to execute his plan.
38:18You had talked to me about things,
38:19but not about the things that actually went down.
38:22I was more about things that he wanted to do,
38:23impact America, like embezzle money.
38:26But I did not know it was gonna happen that way.
38:31I think I came very close to being killed.
38:39I'd heard a little bit about Kerry's association
38:42with what happened.
38:44And it's just such a crazy story.
38:45And it just seems like such a godsend
38:48that she got chosen for the magazine when she did.
38:51It got her away from Taylor
38:53and ultimately might've saved her life.
39:02All three of them were ultimately charged
39:03with five counts of murder.
39:06Dawn pled guilty, so there was no trial.
39:08And she received a 38-year sentence
39:10because she testified against Taylor and Justin
39:14in their respective trials.
39:16I went to court.
39:18That was difficult.
39:20Taylor's right there looking at me as I'm on the stands.
39:23And I was in tears.
39:26Justin and Taylor both ended up getting the death penalty.
39:32I was happy that Taylor got the death penalty.
39:39I'm very proud of Carissa,
39:41that she was able to separate herself from him
39:44and start a new life.
39:46And Playboy played a part in that.
39:49I feel like Playboy saved me a lot,
39:52but I also feel like Taylor stole that from me.
39:55Because while Playboy wanted me to be out there
39:57in the open and promote myself,
39:59all this is going on, all I wanted to do was hide.
40:04And while under contract, I met a guy
40:06and fell in love and got pregnant.
40:09And I chose that over Playboy,
40:11and that was the end of my contract.
40:16For Kerry being so closely connected
40:19with such a horrible tragedy,
40:20you must feel like a giant weight on your shoulders.
40:23But for her, she didn't do anything wrong.
40:25She got out of there just in time.
40:28She's a survivor of this whole thing.
40:33I still get fan mail every now and then.
40:36People want me to sign pictures.
40:39One of my quotes was,
40:40never be afraid of your dreams.
40:43And for a short period of time,
40:46my dream was to feel pretty and be accepted in Playboy,
40:49and I did.
41:09The Playboy Club was full of powerful men,
41:11but bunnies were not allowed to date customers.
41:14It doesn't take long for this relationship
41:16to really solidify.
41:18But just like the bunnies maintain an air of mystery,
41:21sometimes that went for the clientele as well.
41:23And jealousy and betrayal can make us act irrational.
