00:00Carissa Fair had the perfect look for a playboy in the 2000s.
00:06A quintessential girl next door.
00:08And that's what they loved.
00:11But she was definitely out of her element.
00:15She seemed like the type of woman who could be easily influenced by others.
00:21She's about to launch this huge career.
00:25And now all of a sudden you have homicide detectives trying to talk to you.
00:29Nobody knew a thing.
00:31She just disappeared.
00:34This was definitely the most complicated case that I've ever covered.
00:40If you can see the hair on my arms are standing up right now.
00:43Things just keep getting more and more outlandish.
00:47It was just, what the hell is going on?
01:00Five people had been murdered and butchered.
01:05And police had arrested the lead suspect.
01:10Who is, by all accounts, a mystery man.
01:14But then he decided that he wanted to sell his story.
01:20And so he started writing letters from jail.
01:26And he targeted Playboy.
01:30Because his ex-girlfriend Carrie was in that month's issue.
01:35So naturally authorities very much wanted to track her down.
01:42We're trying to identify the entire picture as to what all took place.
01:46And if Carrie was involved with him in an intimate relationship,
01:49we definitely thought she had some information or was potentially involved.
01:55Ultimately they locate her.
01:58And she's in Las Vegas on a promotional event.
02:02Because Carrie, it turns out, is now Carissa Fair.
02:06The Playboy Magazine September Playmate of the Month.
02:11Playboy Magazine September Playmate of the Month
02:17Carissa Fair and I came to L.A. around the same time.
02:23She was a playmate before I came to Playboy, but only slightly.
02:27It was the year 2000.
02:30Playboy was really at the top of its game.
02:33Every young woman wanted to be in Playboy.
02:37And it just seemed like a really magical place to start your career.
02:47I'm Irina Voronina, Miss January 2001.
02:51Carissa was one of the first playmates I ever met in Los Angeles.
02:57She was a typical California girl.
03:00She enjoyed the beach. She enjoyed the outdoors.
03:03And she was always smiling.
03:07We got Carissa Fair!
03:10Carissa was one of the contestants on Win Ben Stein's Money.
03:13And watching the footage of her, I can just see that she's like Playboy's ideal playmate.
03:18What month are you?
03:19I am Miss September 2000.
03:24I was Miss April 2001.
03:27I remember when I first met Carissa,
03:30I really thought she had like a Nicole Kidman vibe.
03:34Because she had this beautiful sort of like strawberry blonde hair.
03:38She had very fair skin and a naturally beautiful face.
03:41And she was tall.
03:44She was a little bit shy, but super, super sweet.
03:51I found out she is actually from Southern California, Riverside.
03:56And she grew up in a one-parent household.
03:59And basically kind of raised herself.
04:02And I think when you grow up really fast like that,
04:05you do want to live a large life.
04:13The early 2000s was a really special time for Playboy.
04:16The brand was very mainstream.
04:18And we are here at the Playboy Mansion.
04:20We've seen all these stars from the 90s,
04:23like Jenny McCarthy,
04:25Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra,
04:28from the magazine and go on to these exciting careers.
04:33Carissa wanted to model and act.
04:35She was definitely embracing opportunities.
04:38In what city is the Pentagon located?
04:41Washington, D.C.
04:42Washington, D.C.?
04:43No.
04:44But I feel like she was definitely out of her element.
04:49Carissa Fair was not her real name.
04:52I remember calling her Carrie.
04:59Her boyfriend sent in her pictures to Playboy
05:04because she didn't really believe in herself all that much.
05:09Nobody really knew about the relationship,
05:12but he believed in her.
05:15Carissa was chosen to be a Playmate.
05:18And in May of 2000,
05:21she shared with me that she got her month,
05:24which will be September of 2000,
05:26and she was super excited.
05:32It was a very competitive time
05:34because there was a very special search
05:37for a Millennium Playmate.
05:40So it must have felt a little bit like winning the lottery.
05:45Carissa's centerfold shoot
05:47had something in the bedroom set up
05:50like she was in her beautiful apartment
05:53with some tasteful lingerie and satin sheets.
05:57It was very sexy.
06:01Looking at Carissa's pictorial,
06:03she is just very much the quintessential girl next door.
06:06She's really beautiful.
06:08She's got a great body.
06:10She's very voluptuous, a really pretty face.
06:13She looks shy but inviting at the same time.
06:17I think Carissa was very happy with her centerfold
06:20and the Playboy shoot in general.
06:24And she was very grateful to be there.
06:30The 2000 Playmates,
06:32they got to do so much cool stuff.
06:35They got to do Betsey Johnson fashion show.
06:40They got to lay out in W-Men,
06:43When I saw the layout of all the Playmates in W,
06:46I was like,
06:47these are the most beautiful girls in the world.
06:51And Carissa was one of them.
06:56For a new girl coming into Playboy,
06:58at the time,
06:59there's an endless potential for opportunity.
07:04I spent the entire summer of 2008
07:09I spent the entire summer of 2000 out in Los Angeles,
07:13hanging out in Hef's inner circle.
07:16One day you're going to go and meet Madonna
07:19or you're going to have tea at Rod Stewart's house.
07:22Which, those things actually did happen.
07:25But I don't have many pictures with Carissa.
07:28She was one of the young ladies
07:30that passed through for a very, very brief time.
07:35She didn't hang around Playboy Mansion that much,
07:39which was very strange
07:40because I was staying at the mansion during my shoots
07:43and I was invited out with Mr. Hefner
07:46practically every night.
07:48But Carissa had a place of her own in Los Angeles.
07:52She was driving a modest car,
07:55like a Honda Civic,
07:57which is not very likely for a girl
08:00who's a Playboy Playmate.
08:01So I knew she didn't have anyone paying her bills.
08:04It was actually very refreshing
08:07because she was different.
08:13I feel like she was kind of somebody who showed up,
08:16did what she had to do.
08:18Everybody really liked her.
08:19She was easy to get along with,
08:21but people felt like she had secrets
08:23and things she didn't want to talk about.
08:27A lot of Playmates, you know,
08:28we had horrible childhood and abusive relationships,
08:32but she didn't want to talk about it
08:35or share certain things.
08:38She seemed like the type of woman
08:40who could be easily influenced by others
08:43and fallen into a situation
08:46where someone was taking advantage of her.
08:52Carrie was described as kind of an enigma.
08:54She was introverted.
08:56But when your issue of Playboy comes out,
08:58all of a sudden you're the center of attention.
09:05You do your centerfold tour,
09:07which is where you go around to different cities,
09:10and people are bringing magazines to you,
09:12and they just want you to autograph it.
09:18This was her time to milk it and enjoy it,
09:21to be the center of attention,
09:23to be the beautiful self.
09:26And guess what?
09:28Police showed up.
09:33She's about to launch this huge career,
09:36and now all of a sudden you have homicide detectives
09:39trying to talk to you about multiple murders.
09:45I think that that would frighten anyone.
09:48And then she just disappeared.
09:53I was like, whatever happened
09:55to that Nicole Kidman-looking centerfold
09:57named Carissa Fair?
09:59Where did she go?
10:01Nobody knew a thing.
10:06I'm Carrie Mendoza,
10:08Playboy centerfold, mid-September 2000.
10:11It's hard for me to believe when I lived through
10:14and I want to tell my story.
10:24Playboy was my only ray of hope that gave me strength.
10:28I had run away, I changed my name.
10:32So when the detectives came to Vegas to interview me,
10:36I was very scared,
10:38and that really changed everything.
10:41And that really changed everything.
10:54I grew up like a very tomboy,
10:57with just my dad and my brother.
11:00My mom left when I was one.
11:03So all I did was focus on school to get out of the house
11:07because I wanted to be on my own.
11:10I even graduated early in high school.
11:13And then I had met somebody,
11:16and we moved in together.
11:24But it was an abusive relationship.
11:30If you didn't have a happy upbringing,
11:32you just end up dating, you know,
11:34the first guy who tells you that you're pretty.
11:37I think a lot of playmates come from a history
11:40of abusive relationships.
11:43I had to get away from him,
11:45but every time I tried to leave, he found me.
11:48He would stalk me.
11:50He found out where I worked.
11:52He popped my tires on my car.
11:55My dad's all, you need to disappear.
11:57So I literally packed up all my stuff
12:00and went to San Francisco.
12:08I didn't know anybody in San Francisco.
12:12I just needed to move far away.
12:16I was 21.
12:19And that's when I started working at a cocktail lounge.
12:23That's where I met Taylor.
12:30Taylor Helzer is about 6 years older than her
12:33and charming and very successful.
12:36And drew the eye of everybody
12:40when he walked into her room.
12:42He was a stockbroker for Dean Winter,
12:45and he would come in there in a suit and tie
12:48and have shots
12:50and was just this very vibrant, outgoing person.
12:55One time, he actually left his credit card
12:58and said that was my tip.
13:00He wanted me to buy something nice
13:02so he could take me out dancing.
13:04And I was, you know, flattered.
13:07But I said, I would love to go out with you,
13:09but I'm not going to use your credit card.
13:12And he took me out dancing.
13:16Taylor was different because he was,
13:19how can I say this?
13:22He wasn't about having sex with me.
13:25It was about getting to know me.
13:27And he just always was happy.
13:30And I wasn't used to being around people
13:32who were always happy.
13:34I didn't grow up in a house where we said,
13:36I love you, and we were affectionate.
13:38He was very affectionate, and it was different for me.
13:41Kind of like showing me a different way of life.
13:47Taylor was raised in an observant Mormon family.
13:51He was the oldest of three, Glenn Taylor Helzer.
13:55From the beginning, he went by his middle name.
13:58He was the family's shining star.
14:01He was very much looked up to within his local church
14:05because he was so successful at evangelizing.
14:10But he was very, very unhappy.
14:13And eventually he leaves.
14:19He moves in with his little brother, Justin,
14:21and eventually Carrie.
14:24And starts living the kind of life
14:27that he believes he should be able to live.
14:33He wanted to try new things in life,
14:36like go to clubs, and that was forbidden.
14:39And things I had never done before either.
14:42He experimented with drugs, and I experimented with them.
14:47My first time I ever did drugs,
14:49he said, here's aspirin for your headache.
14:51And it was ecstasy.
14:53I didn't have a headache, and I didn't know
14:55that I was even taking ecstasy.
15:02I didn't have the opportunity to say no,
15:04I didn't want to take a drug.
15:06But because of the way that ecstasy affected me,
15:09I got over it quickly because it was amazing.
15:13They couldn't get enough.
15:18As their relationship progresses,
15:21Taylor starts to have plans.
15:26He was starting to act different.
15:29He was trying to scam his job
15:33so he didn't have to go to work anymore
15:35and he could just collect disability.
15:37And he's conjuring up all these weird schemes
15:40and things that he wants to do.
15:42And so he was going down a different path
15:44that I was not...
15:47that wasn't me.
15:50He quits his stockbroker job,
15:53and it is this turn
15:55that really starts to have an effect
15:59on their relationship and on Carrie.
16:04Because one of Taylor's money-making schemes
16:07was to try and pitch Carrie for Playboy.
16:16He wanted them to do some, like, escort service.
16:20He thought if I was going to get into Playboy,
16:22I could talk the girls into it.
16:25Taylor's plan might sound crazy to an outsider,
16:28but believe it or not, there were, you know,
16:31high-class escort agencies who did use
16:34girlfriends of Hex or Playmates.
16:37So it's not inconceivable.
16:40It had already been a year that we had been together.
16:43I didn't have stability until I met Taylor.
16:46So I was pretty much did whatever Taylor would say.
16:52So I paid to get my boobs done.
16:57And I sent pictures in.
17:00I took them in my front yard.
17:02Taylor took them.
17:03And I still had scars when I sent my pictures in.
17:11I did not think I was going to get into Playboy.
17:15But after I had my surgery done,
17:18it changed me.
17:21I was starting to feel more independent,
17:23like maybe I wanted to venture out without Taylor.
17:27And my relationship with Taylor was rocky at this time.
17:31It was starting to get controlling.
17:34He was taking crazy medications like Klonopin
17:37and mixing them with alcohol and acting weird.
17:41I was like, I really don't know this person
17:43because he's changed so much.
17:46I think the shift was gradual.
17:49Instead of evangelizing for the church,
17:53Taylor started saying that he's the one
17:56who should be in charge of the Mormon church.
17:59That the current church leadership and church elders
18:02were not good enough.
18:04Slowly coming to the belief that this was his path
18:08and things just keep getting more and more outlandish.
18:13Taylor was not Taylor anymore.
18:15He was talking about religion,
18:17he was talking about how he was a prophet of God
18:19and that he wanted to extort money from clients,
18:21from Dean Witter,
18:23and that this is what God wants him to do.
18:26And I did not like the things he was talking about.
18:28I did not like the disability thing.
18:30I did not want to be consumed by drugs 24-7.
18:34Now we were also selling drugs.
18:37I was seeing darkness in him
18:39and it wasn't a healthy relationship anymore.
18:41It was scary.
18:43And I wanted out, but I felt like I had nowhere to go.
18:47Being in abusive relationships can do a number
18:49on your self-esteem.
18:51But Playboy could definitely be a way out.
18:56When I opened up my P.O. box
18:58and saw the letter from Playboy,
19:01I thought maybe it was a
19:03thanks for your submission, but we're not interested.
19:07But it was the complete opposite.
19:09It was, we would love to have you do some test shots.
19:14They wanted to see more of me and I was excited
19:18because I wanted to move on without Taylor.
19:23But I didn't feel he was going to let me go.
19:26And I got really depressed.
19:28And he saw that and said,
19:31I know what you're doing.
19:33I know you don't want to be here, so just go.
19:36And I literally grabbed my cat
19:38and whatever I could fit in my car and I left.
19:42Like I was gone like in 20 minutes.
19:46She was away from Taylor.
19:49And that was absolutely not
19:52in Taylor's plan.
19:55I was really excited to get down to Southern California
19:58to do these test shots for Playboy.
20:00So I rented a place.
20:02I had a roommate.
20:04And I worked for a nightclub.
20:06I was a server there.
20:09And I felt free of Taylor.
20:11I felt free of the chaos.
20:15I was really excited to get down to Southern California
20:17to do these test shots for Playboy.
20:19So I rented a place.
20:21I had a roommate.
20:24And when they took my pictures,
20:26they said, this very rarely happens,
20:28but you're in the magazine.
20:30This is going to be your centerfold,
20:31like you're going to be Miss September.
20:34Carrie had the perfect look for a Playmate in the 2000s.
20:37She didn't wear a lot of makeup,
20:39very fresh-faced, kind of like a blank canvas.
20:42And that's what they loved.
20:47Doing Playboy was huge
20:49because they were the first people to ever put makeup on me.
20:52Even the pictures I sent in the mail,
20:54I wasn't even wearing any makeup.
20:57So when they turned me around in the chair,
20:59I was like, who is that?
21:01I felt like I was playing a role.
21:03Christopher was my character for Playboy.
21:06It's somewhat common for women to want to use a different name
21:09when they post for Playboy.
21:11You're kind of getting this new image,
21:13and you can use that to start a new life.
21:16It was definitely more than what I expected.
21:18I did not know there was a contract for two years.
21:22Or how much more exposure you can get.
21:28Hef knew who I was, and I was shocked.
21:31He was the first one to show me my magazine
21:33when it was all finished.
21:35And it was so exciting.
21:36He took me to his office and showed me the magazine.
21:38And I was like, oh my God!
21:39This is really happening!
21:45And then one day, Taylor shows up at my job,
21:48unexpected, and stared the crap out of me.
21:55When you become a Playboy Playmate,
21:57some ex-boyfriends come out of the woodwork.
22:00I've seen it so much.
22:03And quite honestly, I was not aware
22:06about the awful relationship she was in.
22:11I think he was hoping she would come back
22:13and he could start his crazy business plan.
22:15I felt very scared,
22:17because I was basically rebelling in his eyes.
22:20I did not know why he came,
22:22but I felt like I needed to do whatever he wanted
22:24because I wanted him to leave.
22:27So he gave me ecstasy, we went to the beach.
22:30And that's pretty much all I really remember.
22:42There's really no getting around it.
22:44There's really no getting around how charming Taylor was.
22:48And how manipulative.
22:52And how good at being manipulative he was.
22:56I told Hef, and Hef was worried about me.
22:59So he said, I'm going to make sure that you're not going to be in one place
23:01for more than two days.
23:04I was all over doing promotions.
23:06I went to Chicago.
23:09I was in Texas.
23:10I was in all parts of California.
23:15I lived out of a bag for weeks.
23:17I went to different places every two days.
23:21There wasn't really any protocol for playmates
23:24who might be having a problem with a stalker,
23:27or with a significant other, or an ex.
23:31But Hef promised to keep her as busy as possible
23:34so she wasn't in the same place all the time.
23:38I think the Dorothy Stratton tragedy definitely played a role
23:42in Hef wanting to help out the playmates that he could
23:45if they felt like they were in danger.
23:47Because it was such a tragedy that was not forgotten.
23:52And I think the fact that Carrie's issue release party was in Vegas
23:55really speaks to that because usually
23:57a playmate's issue release would be in their hometown
24:00because that would get a lot of publicity.
24:03A hometown girl poses nude, so that's almost always what it was.
24:06And there was a little bit.
24:08But she was from Riverside, not Las Vegas.
24:13I went to Vegas, and that's when I turned on the news.
24:17Selena Bishop was one of those folks you just couldn't miss.
24:21And I see that Taylor's on the news.
24:24They were calling him by his first name, Glenn Pelzer,
24:28and asking the public if they had any information.
24:31Locals recently began seeing her with Glenn Helzer,
24:34her boyfriend, who is now a suspect.
24:36I'm over here just in shock.
24:42I did not know what had happened,
24:46but I knew he was capable of doing almost anything.
25:00I was a reporter for the Contra Costa Times.
25:03We covered the entire East Bay.
25:06We became aware in the early morning hours of August 3rd,
25:10a terrified homeowner calls 9-1-1,
25:13gets a hold of the Marin County Sheriff's Office,
25:17and says there have been shots fired.
25:20I have a studio apartment in my basement that I rent out,
25:23and I think that it happened down there.
25:28I was advised that there was a gunshot wound
25:31I was advised that there was a homicide,
25:33and I was asked to respond to the scene.
25:36We actually found that there was two people
25:38that appeared to be deceased,
25:40a Jennifer Villarin and a James Gamble,
25:43as well as nine-millimeter bullet casings.
25:48It turns out the woman who actually lives in the apartment
25:52is a 22-year-old named Selena Bishop.
25:54She's not there, but the two victims inside
25:58appear to be Selena's mother and the mother's companion.
26:03So we needed to try and locate Selena.
26:08Right off the bat, the Marin Sheriff's detectives
26:11were extremely worried about Selena Bishop.
26:16It was just a fluke that it was Jenny and Jim there that night,
26:20so they were not sure if Selena had been the actual intended target,
26:26and that concern only grew over the course of the weekend.
26:33The next significant piece of the investigation
26:36is that Selena doesn't show up for work that following Monday.
26:40Selena worked at the Two Bird Cafe.
26:42Everyone said, oh, well, right now she's camping in Yosemite
26:46with her boyfriend, who she's been dating since May,
26:50and no one really knows much about him.
26:53What they know is that the mysterious boyfriend
26:56lives with his brother, Justin.
26:59And incredibly, co-workers find her pager.
27:05And when the police are going through the pager,
27:08they find the name Justin Helzer.
27:13From there, what we did is we obtained some photographs
27:16from the Department of Motor Vehicles of Justin and his brother,
27:20who we identified as Glenn Taylor Helzer.
27:25And we took those photographs and we showed them to a few people,
27:29and they recognized Selena's boyfriend as being Glenn Taylor Helzer,
27:34also known as Taylor.
27:40So the cops decide they're going to go over to Taylor and Justin's house
27:44and pick up the investigation there.
27:48They go inside the house and they find Taylor and his brother, Justin.
27:53And they find a third person, a woman.
27:56Her name is Dawn, and she's a roommate.
27:59And something's up.
28:03Much like if you could see the hair on my arms, they're standing up right now.
28:06At that time, we're fairly certain
28:08that something horrific had taken place at the house.
28:12They're finding news clippings about Selena's disappearance.
28:16They find drugs.
28:19During that search, I noticed some financial documents
28:22that were not related to either Dawn, Justin, or Taylor.
28:27And as I'm looking at them, I literally said,
28:30who are Ivan and Annette Steinman, and why do they have this paperwork?
28:33And there was a Concord Police Department officer standing at the doorway,
28:38and his head literally swung to the side and looked at me.
28:41He said that they were in the process of working a missing persons case
28:44related to an Ivan and Annette Steinman.
28:48The fact that these Steinmans are missing
28:50and that this paperwork is showing up in a location for a suspect
28:53on an entirely different murder case is going to get everybody's attention.
29:00You just can't stop thinking, what could be next?
29:07And then I was told that a bag was located on the McColumney River
29:12that contained body parts
29:15that were ultimately identified as belonging to
29:18Ivan and Annette Steinman and Selena Bishop.
29:24At this point, the Housers and Dawn get arrested.
29:28They can hook them up for the drugs, so they do that right away.
29:31Once the three of them were arrested, no one talked.
29:37As Marin and Concord investigators dig in to this case,
29:42one more name that kept coming up was Carrie Furman.
29:47And she was that month's Playboy centerfold.
29:51We had learned by talking to people that Carrie had dated Taylor
29:55up until about February of 2000,
29:58just a couple of months of when this took place.
30:01So we attempted to make contact with Carrie.
30:05Carissa was in Vegas promoting her issue,
30:08and I can't even imagine what it's like to find out
30:12that your ex-boyfriend could be a serial killer
30:17while you're trying to celebrate your biggest moment in life.
30:23When the police came, I felt like they were looking at me
30:25like I had some involvement or I helped them in some way.
30:30When we're looking at investigations like this,
30:32everybody is a possible person involved with the investigation.
30:36And my impression was that she was a scared young woman,
30:40and potentially she was involved in some fashion.
30:44We just didn't know to what extent.
30:54It's hard to be so closely connected with something as tragic as what happened.
30:59Taylor was arrested, and within days,
31:02detectives came to Vegas to interview me.
31:06I can't even really remember the whole interview,
31:08because it was so traumatic.
31:12We made a deal with the disattorney
31:15that anything that we had found out would not be used against her.
31:22So at that point, we really went into detail.
31:25And she started to open up.
31:27They wanted a profile of Taylor
31:29and how he went from a stockbroker to the things he did.
31:35I block a lot of things out.
31:38So I can't even tell you.
31:41All I know is the way that Taylor got me to do things.
31:45I knew how persuasive he was, and that scared me.
31:50So as we started to learn that Taylor was a serial killer,
31:54we learned that Taylor had this grandiose idea
31:58of essentially taking over the Mormon church, for lack of better terms.
32:02He thought that he was a prophet of God,
32:04and his intent was to bring everybody into his belief system.
32:10Taylor starts talking about how he's going to bring peace and love to the world
32:15through all of these completely bonkers ideas.
32:19Importing women from Brazil to become high-end prostitutes,
32:23starting a drug ring, all sorts of things to make money.
32:29People would describe Taylor as sort of like a cult leader,
32:32the way he would try to control people.
32:34And it was all incredibly, incredibly toxic.
32:40Carrie's relationship with Taylor
32:42resulted in her helping him in some of his money-making schemes.
32:46Among those was an incident where she was with him in Mexico
32:50when they purchased Rohypnol, a date-rape drug.
32:54I really was kind of just going along with what he was saying,
32:59but not realizing why he wanted it.
33:02We started to think this is why she was concerned,
33:05is because she had provided some money to him to purchase drugs.
33:09But in talking with Carrie over multiple different times,
33:12she was not aware of the violent side of Taylor,
33:16because she chose to depart.
33:19Taylor never talked about murder.
33:22For him to be able to snap and choose to do that,
33:27I don't know who that is.
33:29And I don't know if somebody who can feel that they're a prophet could do that.
33:34This was definitely the most complicated case that I've ever covered.
33:39As far as Taylor went and why these five people were killed
33:44was actually not something that was answered until several years later
33:51when Don Godman decided to cooperate.
33:55After Carrie made the choice to branch away in February of 2000,
33:59that's when Don Godman was brought in.
34:04Taylor saw me as being this lost, innocent girl
34:08that he could brainwash and mold into whatever he wanted.
34:12But I left, and I wasn't there when Don came into the group,
34:16but I had met Don through Justin first.
34:19She had a son, and Taylor paid a lot of attention to her,
34:22and I think that's what she liked.
34:24I feel that Justin was definitely forced to do the things that he did.
34:29Taylor considered himself a prophet,
34:32and his brother and Don he considered disciples.
34:35Taylor's plans involve a lot of things that he has to do, including murder,
34:40but he's doing it, in his mind, at the direction of God,
34:43and that's how he justifies doing all of the crazy things he does.
34:47He dubbed the three of them the Children of Thunder,
34:51and that comes from the biblical Sons of Thunder,
34:55which was what Jesus called the inner core of his apostles.
35:00And the plan that Taylor called Transform America
35:04was going to bring in Christ's second coming.
35:09In order to put it into play, he needed money,
35:14and none of his schemes were successful.
35:19So that was when he thought of his old job as a stockbroker,
35:25and he targets assignments and their retirement savings.
35:31So they prepared everything that they would need,
35:36and we know all this because Don kept all the receipts.
35:41And one of the final pieces of the plan
35:46was finding someone to help launder the money.
35:50So he actively went looking at raves for a naive young woman
35:55who he could charm into doing what he needed done.
36:00And that May, he met Selina Bishop.
36:05Everything was about money.
36:09They went to the Steinmans,
36:12who they kidnapped to obtain their funds.
36:16Taylor abducts the Steinmans.
36:19At gunpoint, they get fed Rohypnol,
36:23and under the influence of Rohypnol,
36:26the Steinmans are forced to write two checks
36:29for $100,000 to Selina Bishop.
36:37After the checks were written, Mr. Steinman was murdered
36:41by having his head bashed into the tile floor.
36:46And Mrs. Steinman had her throat slit.
36:51And then the two brothers and Don thanked God
36:57for the sacrifice the Steinmans made.
37:02At that time, Taylor picks up Selina
37:08for what is going to be their final date, unbeknownst to her.
37:13He was using Selina to open an account
37:16so that it wasn't linked to Taylor Helzer.
37:19Selina didn't realize that the relationship was fake
37:22from start to finish,
37:25where he kills her and dismembers her,
37:28along with the Steinmans.
37:32Then they had to find a way to eliminate Selina's mother,
37:37who had met him.
37:40And so they went to Woodacre and murdered her,
37:43and unfortunately, her boyfriend happened to be there.
37:47Taylor tells people that his goal is to save humanity.
37:51Now how that involves a bunch of dead bodies is unexplainable.
37:58Kerry was never connected to any of the crimes.
38:02There's a thought that maybe the rehypnol
38:05that was purchased utilizing Kerry's funds
38:07may have been used with Ivan and S. Steinman.
38:10But we weren't able to identify that.
38:13She didn't know that he had started to execute his plan.
38:17He had talked to me about things,
38:19but not about the things that actually went down.
38:22It was more about things that he wanted to do,
38:24like impact America, like embezzle money.
38:27But I did not know it was going to happen that way.
38:31I think I came very close to being killed.
38:39I'd heard a little bit about
38:41Kerry's association with what happened,
38:44and it's just such a crazy story,
38:46and it just seems like such a godsend
38:49that she got chosen for the magazine when she did.
38:52She thought that she had gotten her away from Taylor
38:54and ultimately might have saved her life.
39:03All three of them were ultimately charged
39:05with five counts of murder.
39:07Dawn pled guilty, so there was no trial,
39:10and she received a 38-year sentence
39:12because she testified against Taylor and Justin
39:15in their respective trials.
39:17I went to court.
39:19That was difficult.
39:21I was right there looking at me as I'm on the stands,
39:24and I was in tears.
39:27Justin and Taylor both ended up getting the death penalty.
39:33I was happy that Taylor got the death penalty.
39:39I'm very proud of Carissa,
39:41that she was able to separate herself from him
39:44and start a new life,
39:46and Playboy played a part in that.
39:49I feel like Playboy saved me a lot,
39:52but I also feel like Taylor stole that from me
39:55because while Playboy wanted me to be out there in the open
39:58and promote myself, while all this is going on,
40:01all I wanted to do was hide.
40:03And while under contract,
40:05I met a guy and fell in love and got pregnant,
40:09and I chose that over Playboy,
40:11and that was the end of my contract.
40:15For Kerry, being so closely connected
40:18was such a horrible thing.
