00:00Andrew Smith says he was fishing on Pensacola Beach when he saw a swimmer struggling in a rip current about 100 yards offshore.
00:06I was sitting there and this girl came running asking if anybody could swim and I said no, I absolutely cannot swim.
00:15And I looked down at the drone and I was like, well, the drone can swim, I can't.
00:20That's when Smith grabbed his drone, which he uses to cast bait.
00:23He tied a flotation device to the drone, hoping to fly it out to the teenage girl, but he missed on the first try.
00:30And I flew it out and it was a terrible miss. I released it too early. It was really windy.
00:34By now, the girl had been battling the rip current for five long minutes.
00:38Then someone gave Smith a second flotation device.
00:41I lowered it until you could see her hands grab it.
00:43And then I lowered it a little more and I released it and then she climbed on and started like floating.
00:48If it wasn't for that second drop, she wouldn't have made it.
00:51The EMS said she wouldn't have made it, the cops and the lifeguards.
00:56The girl was able to use the flotation device until first responders arrived.
00:59The use of that drone to make a lifesaving rescue is now prompting other public safety officials to look into using drones as lifeguards.
