00:00good afternoon my name is phil hewitt group arts editor at sussex newspapers lovely this afternoon
00:06to speak to gail banks now gail you are wearing a hoodie with the show i am it is pay odds coming
00:12up and weird sisters even with the date and the month now absolutely a hugely significant one for
00:19you it's a dream it really is yes the company you and go back a while don't you yes so i've
00:27i've loved terry pratchett's for over 30 years which interestingly was about the last time i did
00:32much acting um before last year and so yes as you say this is uh this is my hailed's debut i'm very
00:39excited to get to play nanny og who is a larger than life character as any pratchett fans will know
00:44but any non-pratchett fans just need to know that she's one of the triplicate of witches um so weird
00:50sisters by terry pratchett is it's it's it gives heavy nods towards uh macbeth but also towards
00:58hamlet but in a very kind of accessible um fun way and so yeah the three witches are our nanny og which
01:05is myself the a bit of a bit of a well she's the beating heart of the covenant i would say but uh
01:11i would say that wouldn't i and then we've got margaret who's who's the young witch and we've got
01:16granny who is the leader that the witches don't have leaders but if they had a leader granny
01:20weatherwax would be it so uh that's the three of us and we we go around not meddling but meddling to
01:27make sure that that a kingdom is saved that's probably all i need to say what is the magic of
01:33terry pratchett for you why why is he so special and has been i think with with terry pratchett it's
01:40he makes he takes quite complex ideas sometimes and makes them accessible he he he some of his
01:47um ethical theories are like his economics theories are used in economics lectures across the land
01:52because he distilled down concepts into an accessible fun way um he writes with such humor
02:00and such warmth you can tell he loves his characters um and so and the interplay between characters and
02:06there's there's lots of riffs on fairy tales there's lots of riffs on classics like like shakespeare
02:11he he kind of he just he picks from all over the place you never know what you're going to get in a
02:16terry pratchett novel and i think what's lovely is it's it kind of translates quite well into theatre
02:22because the characters are theatrical they are larger than life so uh yeah i think i think it'll make
02:27a good show obviously for you personally it's the perfect way to start your career with hails
02:33absolutely really lovely to speak to you and i hope it goes brilliantly i'm sure thank you so much we
02:38hope people come along and see it fantastic thank you so much lovely to meet you and you
