00:00Hey guys, Congressman Murphy here. I'm going to put my medical hat back on today.
00:05I'm a board-certified urologist and I've taken care of patients with prostate
00:09cancer for the last 30 years. With the recent revelation of former President
00:13Biden's diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer, I want to talk a few minutes about
00:18it. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland attached to the bladder that men
00:21urinate through. In their lifetimes approximately one in eight men will be
00:25diagnosed with prostate cancer. In its early stages, prostate cancer is
00:29diagnosed with a blood test, something called PSA, prostate-specific antigen, as
00:33well as a rectal examination. Sadly enough, some in the country right now are not
00:38doing the rectal examination part, so I would urge you to have your physician
00:41make sure you do that. It's my understanding that President Biden's
00:44diagnosis, however, was made based upon symptoms. Generally, if you make the
00:49diagnosis of prostate cancer based upon symptoms, it is already spread or is at
00:53least locally advanced. It's my understanding now that there is possibly
00:57spread to the bone. In older days, that would be a length of life expectancy,
01:03anywhere from 12 to 18 months. Now, with many, many medical interventions, that can
01:08be extended several years, depending upon the specific genetics of the prostate
01:12cancer and how well it reacts to the many new drugs that they have now. So really, I
01:17would just say this, my heart and prayers go out to President Biden and his
01:20family. My hope is that he will have good treatment awaiting him and that his cancer
01:26responds well to the diagnosis.
