Where do Western Europeans stand on nuclear weapons?

With the US distancing itself from Europe, EU allies are trying to work out how to extend their nuclear umbrella. But where does public opinion in Western Europe stand on the issue?

00:00Where do Western Europeans stand on nuclear weapons?
00:08Many European leaders feel they can no longer rely on the US nuclear commitment to Europe
00:13amid concerns of the Russian threat to the continent.
00:16However, Western European countries are still reluctant to develop their own independent
00:21nuclear deterrent.
00:22That is what a recent YouGov study found after interviewing more than 9,400 people from France,
00:29Britain, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Italy and Sweden.
00:33More than half of the Swedes are against developing and maintaining their own nuclear arsenal.
00:39This is followed by Germany at 49% and Italy at 47%.
00:43By contrast, 64% of people in France and 55% of individuals in Britain who already have
00:49their nuclear arsenals support keeping them.
00:51France held around 280 nuclear warheads in 2024.
00:56Britain has also around 225 nuclear weapons.
01:00Far less appealing to Western Europeans is allowing American nuclear weapons to be stationed
01:06in their countries.
01:07This includes Italy and Germany, which already host US nuclear arms, where 63% of Italian respondents
01:14and 59% of German respondents oppose having American nuclear weapons stationed in their country.
