Biggest moments leading to Cardiff City’s League One relegation

Cardiff City’s relegation to League One marks a low point in the club’s recent history. A lack of consistency, poor recruitment, and managerial instability contributed to their downfall. 00:00Now of course for Cardiff City it was a dismal season in the Championship

00:07There were some minor highs along the way but it was mostly bad

00:11Of course going down to League One the club needs a big reset

00:15We've discussed a lot of times of late just exactly what they need to do in terms of the board

00:20Players, managerial situation, just how the club can go forward in the future

00:23But let's look back at the previous campaign and what got them into this situation

00:28Where were some of the big moments that caused them to go down

00:32And could they have been avoided because of course football, especially the Championship

00:36It's a long old season, 46 games and so it doesn't just happen on one or two games

00:41It happens over a long, long campaign but let's look back at them

00:44Let's go now to our Wales sport correspondent Charles Hague-Jones

00:49Charles, take us back through the season that was 24-25 for Cardiff City

00:54Under the likes of Omuriza and of course Aaron Ramsey right towards the end of it as well

00:58Even though he was unable to save his boyhood club

01:00Where did things go wrong for them

01:02And what lessons, crucially, can be learned from those mistakes that they made in the Championship

01:08And also, you know, I mentioned the small highs they had

01:11They won't seem like very big highs at the moment but what encouragement perhaps can be taken from them as well

01:17Going into what needs to be a really important season for Cardiff

01:20Where they need to spend as little time as possible in League One

01:24And get themselves back into the Championship as quickly as possible

01:27So Charles, what are your thoughts from the previous campaign?

01:32Yeah, there has been a fair few factors in terms of Cardiff City's relegation

01:37Now it's obviously something that has really, really affected the club

01:41It's something that, you know, 22 consecutive seasons have been in either the Premier League or the Championship

01:47You know, but this decline was the result of multiple factors in terms of the downfall

01:55It's a steady downfall, wasn't it?

01:57And League One has been the ultimate goal

01:59And, you know, God forbid they head towards League Two next season

02:03You never really know

02:04It's so unpredictable

02:05The EFL with all success stories

02:08But then on the back end of that, with so many clubs experiencing high success stories

02:13There is also failures

02:15And Cardiff City do not want to be remembered in terms of that

02:18They want to go straight down to League One

02:20They want to go straight back up again

02:22Like the likes of Birmingham City have this season

02:24They've been incredible

02:26But the difference of Birmingham City from now to 12 months ago is absolutely huge

02:31Unrecognisable, really

02:33A few of the factors that have obviously led to the ultimate relegation

02:38I mean, the managerial situation

02:40We've mentioned it for so many months now

02:43And Errol Bullock obviously starting five of their opening six matches losses

02:47He was dismissed in September

02:50And then Omariza comes in

02:53Only to be replaced by Aaron Ramsey at the very end of the season

02:56But Omariza came in

02:58And they did have some good results in fairness to them

03:00But the ultimate downside, I mean

03:03The South Wales derby win was massive

03:06And then since then, real disappointment

03:09I mean, out of nowhere

03:11They had a half-decent FA Cup run against the odds

03:14Winning away at Soak City

03:16And Sheffield United as well

03:18Be it both championship outfits

03:20But they just could not carry that momentum

03:23From the FA Cup to the championship

03:25I mean, they only managed to win nine games in 45 championship matches

03:32Finishing rock bottom of the table as well

03:35And obviously being renegated isn't great

03:37But to finish rock bottom as well

03:38Just really stamps that authority in terms of such a bad season

03:42They've had, you know, defensive lapses

03:45Limited creativity, that has to be said

03:47A lack of goal-scoring prowess as well

03:50I mean, top goal-scorer Robinson

03:52Really, really difficult season for him

03:54In all fairness

03:55He has to hope he can bounce back in League One

03:57If that's what he wants

03:59And the Cardiff issue that they've got now

04:01They have to make sure that these young players

04:03Are built into this project now

04:05Because can they convince players to drop another level?

04:08It's a massive difference

04:10Championship to League One

04:11A huge leap in quality and standards

04:14You know, that's just the way it is across the season

04:18You know, League One's the destination

04:20Can they get it over the line

04:21And return to the championship will be the biggest ask

04:23But we will see

04:26I mean, it's a massive season for Cardiff City

04:28In terms of their future

04:30How they're going to go about it

04:32Vincent Tan needs to get it right

04:33And he needs to act very, very swiftly

04:35This summer window is going to be so important

04:38And hopefully, Cardiff City can get back to the second tier
