00:00Hello and welcome to the City of Joy for Match 1 in the LG One Day Series between India and England.
00:06So there we have it then, the toss has been won by India and Sarov Ganguly has chosen to bat first.
00:11A very, very strong Indian team on the park here today.
00:14It mustn't have been easy for the selectors to pick the 11 because there is so much of competition for places.
00:19But have a look at this Indian batting line-up and that's something England will have to worry about, David.
00:24It is a strong batting line-up, Ganguly going in at the top and that will be something that England will try to play on.
00:29Ganguly under pressure as India's captain but he can play number two, Tendulkar, the best in the world by a distance.
00:36Strong batting line-up and then you look down the bottom of the order, Srinath, Singh, Kumbley, a lot of experience there.
00:42Yes and watch out for that young wicket-keeper, Ajay Rathra, playing his first one-day international.
00:48And the England team, a good combination.
00:50It is but it's not the combination that they wanted. They've lost Graham Thorpe, he's back at the hotel, he's got a stomach bug.
00:57It gives a chance to Michael Vaughan to come in at number four. Lots of younger players, Darren Goff backing the team.
01:03There's valuable thoughts there from David Lloyd. The noise is deafening and the reason for that, Tendulkar and Ganguly are making their way out to the centre.
01:13It's time for us to go into the commentary box area. Starting off there is David Guy, beg your pardon, and Sanjay Manjrekar.
01:21Thanks Ravi, a very warm welcome from this Eden Garden Stadium, Sachin Tendulkar, the little maestro.
01:29Sarov Ganguly, the Indian captain on home turf here and very keen to get the series off to a personal and team start they all remember.
01:41And of course India and he's going to open the bowling from the pavilion end.
01:45The big two, Goff and Caddick, back into the England squad for these one-day matches. Goff is in the team, Caddick isn't.
01:54And that place goes to Matthew Hoggard who was so impressive in the test series here prior to Christmas.
02:05Just a slight delay as we wait for the clock to come round to 2.30, the official starting time for this game.
02:15And a warm welcome to our viewers on Sky Sports and around the world. The seed is set here in Calcutta.
02:30Two slips in place, the left-hander Sarov Ganguly is the man to face.
02:38And just time to ponder, time to think as everyone waits for the umpire to call play.
02:45Umpire SK Sharma says all is ready, let's play.
03:10And the first ball of the day delivered safely by Darren Goff at a great pace.
03:15Sarov Ganguly in behind it and they're just looking for it there.
03:19With me in the commentary box Sanjay Mandrake. It's a great atmosphere Sanjay, isn't it?
03:24And it's something that doesn't surprise me. I've been here often and it's been the same. In fact
03:28Arun Lal, the local boy, was telling me he hasn't seen the kind of craze and the sort of anticipation
03:34that he's seen here in Calcutta for this match ever before. So it's maybe a little bit of a
03:39surprise that it's just climbing the whole craze of the game as Darren Goff runs in.
03:47A bit of carry this time. Well just interesting statistic that I'm reading at the start of this
03:54match. England have played here just once. It just turned out to be a pleasant evening.
04:02So
04:2213 without loss in here.
04:24Hoggard probably slightly happier now bowling to the right hander. Even if it is Sachin Tendulkar.
04:28You had those sort of problems in the first over.
04:33That's a good shot. Just a little bit short from Matthew Hoggard.
04:38All too easy it seems for Sachin Tendulkar. Placed it superbly. He just timed it away. No
04:44great effort in it. There's nothing wrong with the ball. Slightly short in length.
04:48And not really a short arm pull. Much straighter than that. But got it reasonably in the middle
04:55of the bat. Very quick decision and quick arm movement.
05:08Hoggard very quick to respond there.
05:11Well you've got no chance of making yourself heard. Saw early in the piece already. Nassar
05:16was saying when he tried to make a field change he had to really shout and point and
05:21strain to make himself understood. It's airborne but safe.
05:28Again the cheers of the crowd. We hear plenty more of that
05:32Maybe one of the reasons Snape isn't the one-day team for England. An off-spinner to bowl to the three left-handers.
05:42Pulled away firmly by Saurabh Ganguly. It's going to be four runs.
05:48First time that either Gough or Hoggard have scored.
05:52Pulled away firmly by Saurabh Ganguly. It's going to be four runs.
05:59First time that either Gough or Hoggard have dropped anything short at him. It didn't really get up.
06:07Sitting close to the computer man where all the data gets fed in. There is that man looking into
06:16the monitor and making all the notes which will be stored in that hard disk of that computer.
06:24Just flaunting my knowledge.
06:3227 without loss now and Tendulkar matching each other identically. 12 runs
06:38from 15 deliveries. Tendulkar is the man on strike.
06:41As Hoggard starts his third over. None for 16 so far.
06:53England have changed the field so that Hussein is now a short extra cover. Just the one slip in.
07:01Tendulkar the man on strike.
07:19No ball signal so two runs added to the score.
07:31Did some good shots today. Saurabh Ganguly driving that. Wasn't a half volley. Hit it on the up.
07:38Both these England bowlers I don't think have bowled badly. There's very little margin for error.
07:46Should get another single. The good thing from the batsman's point of view there is
07:50hardly any lateral movement so you can hit on the up. You can hit through the line.
07:57There was almost 50 to 60 000 people even an hour and a half before play started today.
08:07Now one would imagine not a seat available.
08:17That's in the air but in the gap as well.
08:21That's slashed away hard by Tendulkar. The 50 comes up for India.
08:27What is also important the pace of the pitch as the game progresses.
08:37The outfielder is quick. There's no chance for that fielder in the end. For a moment we thought he'll get there.
08:45Just too quick for him. Well England haven't bowled badly. I mentioned earlier that England
08:51just on the defensive here looking for a wicket though.
08:57Bowling and a stunned silence here at the Eden Gardens.
09:07Andrew Flintoff getting the big one. It's Flintoff full of length. He gets the ball full.
09:13Just now and again England have bowled short. It's ball full of length looking for the leg side Tendulkar.
09:19Stunned silence. Yes not from England. England cock a hoop that they've got the best player in the world out
09:25just before drinks. Tendulkar leaves the field for 36, 78 for 1.
09:36Flintoff will continue. It's up in the air. It's gone nowhere. Taken.
09:45So the England captain taking a catch to dismiss the Indian captain.
09:50Premeditated shot. Looking to get the ball over the leg side. It's Flintoff again with his height
09:57and that extra bit of pace. Ganguly sets himself to go over the leg side. He gets it high in the air.
10:04It's Hussain who calls the catch. Pouches it very very safely. It's Flintoff again.
10:10He's got two foot. Both openers back in the pavilion. Ganguly's gone for 42, 95 for 2.
10:19He's come after a double blow in a short time for India. Both Ganguly and Tendulkar back in the pavilion.
10:32The two new batsmen in the middle.
10:49Just a little bit of attack with that one slip in position. Three saving one on the offside and a couple on the leg side saving one.
11:04Oh, he's going to get his first boundary, is he? Yes.
11:09Ashley Jha is the third man boundary. Great timing by Lakshman. 101 for 2, India.
11:17Snipes look good. Six overs for 25, 4.17 the economy rate.
11:25That's a big hit. First six. In fact, the second six of the game.
11:32First hit by Ganguly. Now this one by Munger.
11:36Tell you what Ravi, the chip shot that he's played has given him the idea of the pace from the pitch.
11:48He's timed it beautifully this one. Played it with the spin. No risk there at all.
11:52Yes, the placement was once again excellent. Even if it had not cleared the boundary, it was a certain boundary.
11:59With that loop, sometimes you feel that the ball is going to be over pitch, but it just drops a centimeter or two short.
12:08Yes, and what's good about the way he's bowled is that the arm action doesn't change alarmingly when he slows it up.
12:16It's a quick arm action. The ball comes out a little slowly.
12:22Now there's an example of that. That's beautifully played by Ganesh Munger.
12:28The 50 partnership coming up.
12:36Believe me, at home, England, if you're listening to this, or anywhere else in the world, the noise here, the volume in the gardens is quite something.
12:49Straight into the hands of Midwickett. That's a simple chance. Gleefully accepted.
12:55Daringoff has done what he came back on to do. He's taken the wicket.
13:04Paul Culling with the man at Midwickett. Good fielder.
13:07And that flick away on the leg side, just fractionally mistimed.
13:11So the end of EBS Laxman.
13:14He's gone for 25.
13:19So the new man of the crease, Virenda Sehwag.
13:23We saw during the test series that he can be a very free-flowing batsman as well.
13:30This is the wicket.
13:32Daringoff has come back over.
13:35EBS Laxman, a little bit lazy with the shot really.
13:39Chipping away no more, just short arm jab straight to Paul Cullingwood.
13:45That's what England have done though.
13:47That's why they're in this game and very much in it.
13:49It's a good wicket, but they've taken wickets at the right intervals.
13:53Every time a partnership seems to be building, they've broken it.
13:56Now if they can pick a couple of quick wickets up.
14:00Oh, well bowled indeed by Daringoff. That was a perfect delivery.
14:05First ball to Virenda Sehwag.
14:08Chances gone begging.
14:09Well, this is something England have got to look at.
14:12You've got a brand new batsman in there.
14:18They slowed that down. It should be a chance.
14:23Nick Nye doesn't know.
14:26Well, it was a brilliant effort from Nick Nye.
14:35And Dinesh Mongia has the strike.
14:39Now Michael Vaughan getting a bowl.
14:46That's fifty. Fifty for Dinesh Mongia.
14:55He's played very well too. He's played some good shots.
14:58He's picked the slur here as well.
15:01Strike rate
15:03of one hundred. So a runner ball for Dinesh Mongia.
15:06It's a very good inning so far.
15:08And the one thing he needs to do is carry it on.
15:14It's bowled in.
15:16If you believe it, slow ball.
15:19And that shot was all over the place.
15:23For Tendulkar, another Indian batsman to be bowled.
15:26Sehwag is the latest.
15:28The ball's crashed into off stump.
15:29And this wicket has come at an important time for England.
15:32It's an important player as well, Sehwag.
15:34He can be dangerous in the final overs.
15:36He departs for twenty-nine.
15:38One-nine-three for four.
15:45Hemang Badani, the number six batsman for India, making a comeback.
15:49Forty-two, thirty-six, twenty-five, twenty-nine.
15:53Needed one to get a big one.
15:57One-ninety-three for four.
16:06Goff has come back well.
16:08Andrew Flintoff has been the pick of the bowlers.
16:14Beautiful hit.
16:16One bounce, four runs again.
16:19Two men out there, long on and long off.
16:21But this completely bisected them.
16:28And of course, with the slower bowlers and the slow bowler-like snake,
16:33for the batsman to use the feet, get to the pitch of the ball.
16:36He's in the air again, he asks the question.
16:39Very quickly, down the pitch, Badani.
16:46Got him this time, that's well bowled.
16:47That's a wonderful comeback from Jeremy Snape.
16:54So he's got another wicket for England at another interesting time.
16:59England have chipped away at these wickets this afternoon.
17:04He's been hit straight down the ground.
17:05He's eventually deceived Dinesh Mongia.
17:08It's been a very fine innings from him, though.
17:15Mongia on his way as the top scorer of this Indian Innings.
17:21Played very well, come down the pitch, but it's Snape who's kept his nerve.
17:25Just a little bit of spin.
17:28White-hot atmosphere here in Calcutta.
17:31He's played well, Dinesh Mongia, in only his fifth One Day International.
17:3471 for him, and India now 232 for five.
17:40But he held it back, didn't he?
17:41And that's what deceived, in the end, Dinesh Mongia.
17:46Hasn't tossed it up, but he hasn't got it full either.
17:51That seems to have clipped leg stump or something.
17:56Jeremy Foster appealing for the stumping.
18:01Bails off very quickly.
18:05And, well, England quietly celebrating ahead of the third umpire's decision.
18:14Well, Foster thinks so.
18:15He does drag out of his crease Agarka.
18:17Does he get back?
18:19He's got to be behind the line.
18:20The line is the umpire's.
18:21He doesn't get back for me.
18:24I'm sure that will be out.
18:25Smart work by Foster.
18:27England jubilant.
18:28They think that this is out.
18:29He's gone to the third umpire.
18:31Let's have another look.
18:32Does he get back?
18:33No, he doesn't.
18:34It's no use having a heel above it.
18:37That should be out.
18:38Should be a red light coming on, and there is.
18:40That's the end of Eddie Agarka.
18:43Good piece of work from Jamie Foster.
18:44Very, very sharp piece of work indeed.
18:48Agarka gone.
18:50It's 235 for five.
18:53More good work from England's spinners.
18:55It's down the leg side.
18:57Should be called wide also.
18:59James Foster.
19:01Very quick work.
19:02Down the leg side.
19:03There's the wide call.
19:05Agarka just didn't make his guard.
19:07Didn't get back in his ground.
19:08He's gone for two.
19:09Another good wicket for England.
19:11236 for six.
19:13Stuck to the guns.
19:14They fielded exceptionally well.
19:28241 for six then.
19:30And it's six and over.
19:32They'll be up to 277.
19:43This is the final over then for Jeremy Snape.
19:49That's got to be very close.
19:50He was always under pressure.
19:53A desperate dive at the end.
19:56Jamie Foster again.
19:57Kept his head, kept his eye on the ball.
20:03It's Flintoff in the deep.
20:04And as soon as Flintoff gets the ball,
20:06the batsman's in trouble.
20:08Exocet throw.
20:09Despairing dive.
20:12Very, very close.
20:13Foster gathers the ball well.
20:14Very well.
20:15He's gone.
20:20Should be the end of Ajay Ratra.
20:22Indeed it is.
20:23Again, the red light goes on.
20:24Second time in quick succession.
20:27Caught short of his ground.
20:31As soon as Flintoff comes into the picture,
20:34the batsman's in trouble.
20:36Super take from the wicketkeeper, Foster.
20:40Despairing dive from Ratra.
20:44He's gone for two.
20:45242 for seven.
20:47Part is to some computations before it's decided.
20:50But potentially England could lose
20:53three overs from their innings here.
20:57First ball of the over has been sliced away before.
21:04I dare say that
21:05Badani will be a little bit happy with his partner this time.
21:09These can be three good overs for India.
21:14Around the wicket.
21:16That's a powerful shot too.
21:17But there is a man there.
21:18Giles is there.
21:21They're going to look for the second.
21:23Problems for Badani.
21:25That's a good throw.
21:27Badani was slow setting off.
21:30The assumption was that it was going to be
21:33his partner, Harbhajan Singh, who was going for danger.
21:36And Harbhajan was sprinting away.
21:37Badani was slow to set off.
21:39It's good, sensible cricket
21:42in the defence.
21:44And it's going to be
21:46a very difficult game.
21:47Good, sensible cricket
21:50in the deep here from England.
21:53Badani was slow.
21:54He's looking to get back for the second.
21:56Very accurate throw from Hoggar.
21:57Good work again from Foster.
21:59No third umpire this time.
22:01But he's played very, very well, Badani.
22:09Through to Jamie Foster.
22:10They're running through the throws
22:11over the top of the stumps.
22:14It's a bye with which to finish the innings.
22:18And India, I suspect,
22:20will be happy enough
22:22with that total.
22:23India, after 50 overs,
22:262-42-36.
22:28Both in looking
22:30in good touch.
22:31The innings of the innings.
22:33Ventilating batting.
22:34And this is how it finished.
22:362-81-8 after 50 overs.
22:39Top score, Dinesh Mongia.
22:41Before he was bowled by Jeremy Snape
22:44for 71.
22:45Good start from Ganguly and Tendulkar.
22:47At times it looked as though India would cruise to 2-80.
22:51England fought back as well
22:53at other times.
22:55And it was a good fielding performance
22:57that helped keep it down even to that.
23:00So, 2-82 is the target
23:03for England.
23:04Here are the bowling figures
23:05before we move on.
23:07Flintoff 2-51.
23:10Continuing his good form
23:12from the Test Series before Christmas.
23:13Darren Goff back into the frame.
23:15His first International of the Winter.
23:17One or two disappointing though.
23:18Ashley Giles for one.
23:19Snape did well, one for 53.
23:21All in all, it's a stiff target though.
23:232-82 in 49 overs.
23:26England were penalised one over
23:28for a slow overrate.
23:31And so the pressure now
23:33transmits itself to
23:34Marcus Triskothic.
23:35He's going to open the innings with Nick Knight.
23:38Two left-handers.
23:40And the first man with a ball in his hand.
23:41Javagal Srinath.
23:48Off the mark straight away.
23:50So England, one ball and one run.
23:52Triskothic off the mark.
23:54Nick Knight will take over.
23:57Nick Knight, seen by England
23:59as one of those pulled into the squad
24:02for these 6-1 days here in India.
24:04And then the same squad
24:06goes to New Zealand
24:08and straight away plays another
24:09five one-day internationals.
24:11So 11 in a row as England
24:13try and start their planning
24:15for the World Cup next year.
24:23Good shot, he's gone.
24:25First ball.
24:26Nick Knight is on his way.
24:29It's one for one.
24:31Javagal Srinath has struck straight away.
24:34That target already looks
24:36yet tougher.
24:38Well, no hesitation from the umpire.
24:40He has to pitch in line.
24:43Go on and hit the stump.
24:47And he'll go straight up.
24:51Nick Knight has gone.
24:53Not the start England wanted.
24:55It's one for one.
25:08Well, Nasser Hussain out there
25:10far more quickly than he anticipated
25:12or would have wished.
25:14It's just the third ball
25:16of this England innings.
25:19Ampar Sharma is the man at the other end.
25:38Well, that's the end of a good opening over
25:41for Srinath and India.
25:43England one for one.
25:48Who will bowl the first over
25:50from the pavilion end.
25:58Something of a loose,
26:00just a little bit wider off stump,
26:02not too wide.
26:04And Agarkar, one for one.
26:06And Agarkar, one of the
26:08one-day specialists it seems.
26:11Pulled back into the squad
26:13for the six one-day internationals
26:15in the LG Cup.
26:17And those couple of spells there,
26:19six and seven,
26:21absolutely devastating.
26:25Still in that restrictive stage
26:27of the 15 overs.
26:29It's given.
26:32Leg before Nasser Hussain.
26:34Anil Kumble strikes for India.
26:37Huge delight among the crowd.
26:39Nasser Hussain was beginning
26:41to look dangerous.
26:43But he's gone.
26:45Well, it's a full and straight
26:47delivery from Kumble.
26:49Interesting to see if Nasser Hussain
26:51advances down the pitch.
26:53But it's Kumble into their
26:55third.
26:56But it's Kumble into the attack.
26:58Leg spin.
27:00He won't spin very many.
27:02But he will look to ball accurately.
27:04Another LBW decision
27:06against England.
27:08Hussain this time.
27:10But it's a straight delivery.
27:12Takes a step down.
27:14Misses the back completely.
27:16Is it going down the leg side?
27:18The keeper is.
27:20I'm sure we'll have a good look
27:22at this one.
27:23But he's gone Hussain.
27:25Well, Nasser Hussain is out
27:27of the way for India.
27:29Michael Vaughan is the No. 4
27:31batsman.
27:33Indians on top at the moment.
27:35And the field
27:37responding accordingly.
27:39A slip and a silly point
27:41to Michael Vaughan, the No. 4
27:43batsman.
27:44Move Harbhajan Singh.
27:46The off spinner from the high
27:48court end replacing Srinath
27:50who went for 12 in his last over.
27:51Srinath is bowling the first 15
27:53overs.
27:55And the Indian captain
27:57is pretty excited.
28:06They're looking for two.
28:08Good work by Ajit Agra.
28:10He's a good fielder in the outfield.
28:12Now Harbhajan Singh.
28:22He's gone for it.
28:26And it's perhaps the biggest six
28:28that we've seen today.
28:31Good shot by Chris Cotting.
28:33He's a strong man.
28:35To Boundary over there
28:37at Dean Midwickie.
28:43He's getting some spin
28:45and good flight on that occasion.
28:47Not as slow as
28:48some of the off spinners that we saw
28:50from the England spinner.
28:52Good delivery.
28:54Still gets the ball above the
28:56batsman's eyeline.
28:58So much spin on.
29:00The ball will dip.
29:05Not the right length to play a sweet shot.
29:07Question now.
29:09Hari Arun says no.
29:1173-42 England.
29:13Very, very frustrating for him.
29:15This is unlucky.
29:16So Fortune favouring the brave here.
29:20Mentioned earlier he likes that mid-wicket area.
29:22This is exactly where he was looking to...
29:27That's smashed down the ground.
29:29It's four more.
29:30More orthodox this time.
29:31Giving himself a bit of room
29:32to get his arms free.
29:35England taking the game to India.
29:37The crowd has gone quite quiet.
29:42That's through the offside.
29:43Now that's time well.
29:44Long chase.
29:46Nothing...
29:48Januar Srinath is always going to struggle here.
29:50Hopefully there is no serious injury.
29:54But a spread out field now.
29:56Plenty of singles on offer.
29:59It's gone fine.
30:00That'll go quickly.
30:01It'll go all the way.
30:03Made over from England's point of view.
30:05Has eight runs from it.
30:07Four wides there.
30:09So still another ball to go.
30:16Nice in.
30:20Good shot.
30:23Just kept his head down.
30:25Played through the line of the ball.
30:27Placed it away beautifully.
30:29And England keep the run rate ticking.
30:30That's gone high.
30:33Into the lights and taken safely.
30:35Ajit Adhigarh has taken the catch.
30:37Kumble gets his revenge.
30:40That's the same for Michael Vaughan.
30:42He just started to play nicely.
30:44Been playing quite sensibly in support
30:46of Marcus Dostoevsky.
30:48And trying to repeat the shot.
30:50Trying to keep his head down.
30:52He's got the ball.
30:54He's got the ball.
30:56He's got the ball.
30:57He's got the ball.
30:58And trying to repeat the shot.
31:00Trying to look over
31:02that leg side field a wee bit.
31:04A little bit straight even.
31:06The miscue. Comfortably taken.
31:09Indeed a shame from England's point of view
31:11because they were stitching together
31:12a pretty good partnership these two.
31:14That's the wicket they needed.
31:16It's 123 for 3.
31:20And he's a man who established
31:22some credentials in Zimbabwe as well.
31:24Just last year in October.
31:26Here's the wicket again.
31:27Michael Vaughan.
31:29Not quite there for this one.
31:32Little bit of turn from Anil Kumble.
31:34The shot out of control.
31:36And Ajit Agarkar
31:38takes the catch.
31:43Really was no need for that one.
31:45He had gotten away with a boundary in the over.
31:47They were doing fine.
31:49All he needed to do was just nudge it for singles.
31:52And that has really
31:54tested everybody.
31:55He's got away from everybody
31:57including the keeper.
31:59A lot of turn on that one.
32:01Treskothic has gone along well
32:03and he's had good partners in Assane
32:05and then Vaughan.
32:07Collingwood has joined the party 12 from 19.
32:09But he's played terrifically well
32:11Treskothic.
32:15And again the sweep shot.
32:17Again the gap.
32:19This is a brilliant hundred.
32:21His second in one day internationals.
32:23And a hundred thousand
32:25that have turned up here will stand up.
32:27He deserves the ovation.
32:30He's played wonderfully well.
32:32He's got the sweep away.
32:34He's been confident to play the sweep.
32:36He's not a well man.
32:38He was off the field five times
32:40when England fielded.
32:42Arms are locked.
32:44Looks to the heavens.
32:46Helmet off.
32:48Deep breath.
32:50Start again.
32:52In the air.
32:53And it's in.
32:56Damguli gets the wicket.
32:58Tendulkar the catcher.
33:01And England lose their third wicket.
33:03In fact their fourth.
33:05Well smiles again for India.
33:07It's Tendulkar.
33:09Try and keep him out of the game
33:11for any length of time.
33:13They wanted India.
33:15England 184 for four.
33:24And Andrew Flintoff
33:26is the new man out here for England.
33:28They've just lost their fourth wicket.
33:31Now that Flintoff is at the crease
33:33I wonder how long it'll take for Damguli
33:35to get his spinners on.
33:37184 for four.
33:45There it is.
33:47The BC Roy Clubhouse.
33:54He's given.
33:56But I tell you what.
33:59I thought it pitched outside the leg stump.
34:01The first thing that came into my mind
34:03when the shout was made by Srinath
34:05is there is every chance
34:07that the ball has pitched outside leg stump.
34:09Wow.
34:11I've got to say that Triskotic is an unlucky man.
34:13Just a couple of runs away
34:15from the highest score at Eden Gardens.
34:17He's gone for 121
34:19and England now 224 for five.
34:24Srinath.
34:39Srinath.
34:42Gets off the mark.
34:44First ball that he faces.
34:46Jeremy Snape
34:48is the number seven batsman
34:50for England.
34:51The end of the 36 over.
34:53England 225 for five.
35:02Pressure on all.
35:04Not just the batsmen.
35:06Holders and fielders as well.
35:09It's a good shot.
35:11Won't get too many though.
35:14And to Flintoff
35:16who I think has fallen short of that.
35:18He's had a desperate lunge for it
35:19but just get the feeling.
35:22Andrew Flintoff is gone.
35:27I was yet to see him with the throw.
35:29Now Andrew Flintoff's got to get back.
35:31Does he get back?
35:33He's struggling.
35:35He's out.
35:38He's a big man
35:40and well he made a sort of a desperate lunge
35:42to get into the crease.
35:44The throw was good.
35:46It wasn't quick but
35:47it was very close to the stumps.
35:50Flintoff wanting the second
35:52was refused by Jeremy Snape.
35:55He wants to have another look
35:57at the third umpire.
36:00And there the bails come off
36:02and Andrew Flintoff well short
36:04of the crease.
36:07There you can see
36:09the stump just disturbed
36:11and Flintoff well short.
36:18There it is.
36:20A death signal for Flintoff given
36:22and the crowd ecstatic.
36:26The score 231 for St.
36:38Ashley Gise replaces Andrew Flintoff
36:43for a couple of bonuses for Saru Kanguli
36:45and this is the run out.
36:48Of Andrew Flintoff.
36:50Wanting the second
36:52refused by the partner
36:54and he was short of the ground.
36:58Well plenty left in this game.
37:00Next one is in three days time
37:02in Cuttack.
37:05He's given it.
37:07Harbhajan Singh takes the wicket.
37:09It's the end of Jeremy Snape.
37:17Very quick in their decision making
37:19in this game.
37:21India taking wickets now
37:23at just the right time.
37:25It's a wonderful over from Harbhajan.
37:27Teasing over.
37:29The score straight on.
37:31Is he in line or is he just outside?
37:33Wicketkeeper drifts down the leg side.
37:35They've not lost one yet.
37:37India these LBWs
37:39they've been crucial.
37:41England now 233 for 7.
37:43That's into the gloves.
37:45That's got him.
37:48Good catch from Racha.
37:50Had to go low to his right.
37:52And Ajit Agarkar now has struck
37:54to put England
37:56further away from victory
37:58in this game.
38:00Jamie Foster just stretching a little wide out.
38:02Just outside off stunt from Agarkar.
38:04No great pace
38:06in this Indian attack
38:08but lots of subtlety.
38:10It's a good catch by the keeper.
38:12He's come through this game
38:14and it's a strike for Agarkar.
38:16Crowd's gone wild
38:18and England now 244 for 8.
38:22Still only 5 and over.
38:30That's how.
38:32That's the end of Daringov.
38:34Very simple court and ball chance
38:36accepted with huge joy
38:38by Ajit Agarkar.
38:40He's done the trick.
38:42He's cut his pace down here
38:44in this final spell.
38:46Just made sure that he gets the lines right.
38:48Daringov
38:50out of sorts completely with the bat.
38:52India
38:54ever closer now to winning this game.
38:57Agarkar cleans up.
38:59It's Daringov, a cheap wicket.
39:01It's a tame shot back to the bowler.
39:03Easy court and ball.
39:05246 for 9.
39:10Last man in, Matthew Hoggart.
39:12He won't have to face that wicket
39:14falling off the last ball
39:16of Ajit Agarkar's over.
39:198 overs left.
39:2136 to win then.
39:23Looks a long way away now for England.
39:33Astrid Giles coming back for the second.
39:43One further reason for optimism
39:45is the fact that Matthew Hoggart
39:47is there at the crease.
39:49A reputation as a batsman.
39:52He's got his run there to get off the mark.
39:59You see him a long way away.
40:0127.
40:13Well, it's all pretty tense down there.
40:16Trouble is, of course, when you're sat in the dressing
40:18there's nothing you can do.
40:20That has been clubbed.
40:22One bounce.
40:24Well, I thought it was one bounce four.
40:28Anwar Sharma again
40:30has leapt to his decision.
40:36He's gone off the shot.
40:38It's a terrific shot.
40:40He's picked it up from leg stump.
40:42Ashley Giles.
40:44Four, six.
40:46Well, it's a one bounce four.
40:48Surely that should be a six.
40:50But it's a four.
40:52The ball bounces just inside the line.
40:58Well, he's going to have to do it again.
41:00You'll see the signal
41:02to cancel the first instruction.
41:04There it is.
41:1023 required now.
41:12Dressing room becomes animated
41:14when any boundary is struck.
41:16Umpire signals six.
41:19It was a four.
41:28That's a good shot too.
41:30But no, he hasn't got it hold.
41:32It's caught.
41:34I thought he got hold of it.
41:36He hadn't.
41:38And so that winds up the game for India then.
41:40Ashley Giles looking to hit over mid-off.
41:43Didn't get hold of it.
41:46The ball's safely taken.
41:50And India are the victors
41:52by 22 runs here in Kolkata.
41:57Well, it's good to start with a win.
41:59And India have drawn first blood against England.
42:02Ashley Giles looking for the big shot down the ground.
42:05Mighty relieved.
42:07This wonderful bumper crowd.
42:09Not to be for England.
42:11Ashley Giles looking down the ground.
42:13Catches it high on the bat.
42:15Comfortable catch for the captain Ganguly.
42:18Safe in his hands.
42:20Not to be for England.
42:22Joy for India.
42:24England have played their part
42:26and just fallen short in this first game.
42:30Well, the crowd have had an absolute rip-roaring game.
42:33As all those fires have been lit
42:35with whatever papers available in the crowd.
42:38They've had a great day and a great night.
42:40They're delighted that India have won this first game.
42:43And they'd have been worried
42:45some hour and a half ago
42:47that that wasn't going to happen.
42:49Fiercely partisan, of course,
42:51and they have every right to be here.
42:53This stadium went almost silent
42:55while Marcus Trzkofic was
42:57appearing to engineer an England win.
42:59But that's all changed now.
43:01The crowd much relieved,
43:03much happy indeed,
43:05that India got off to the start they wanted.
43:07We can just recap now
43:09on the way this game went.
43:11India won the toss this morning.
43:13The start of the afternoon.
43:15And we're indebted really to Dinesh Mongia
43:18to get things up there to 281.
43:20His was the best innings
43:22of that first half of this game.
43:2471 to him. He looked in very good touch.
43:26Ganguly and Tendulkar
43:28had got India off to a very positive start.
43:30It took Flintoff to get through
43:31the defences of Tendulkar
43:33to put the brakes on
43:35just that little bit.
43:37Reasonable support in the middle order,
43:39but none of them going on beyond 35.
43:41Laxman 25, Sehwag 29.
43:43He wasn't really in good touch today at all.
43:45Badani played some great shots.
43:4735 from 33.
43:49But it was Dinesh Mongia
43:51who led the way. So 281 for 8 it was
43:53after the 50 overs.
43:55Astrid Giles a little off the boil today.
43:576.83 his economy rate,
43:591 for 41 his figures from 6.
44:01And, well, England fielded well.
44:03That was one thing they can look back on
44:05and be happy about.
44:07They fielded well all the way through those 50 overs.
44:09Nonetheless, 281.
44:11A lot of runs for anyone to chase.
44:13And this is how they fared.
44:15Jaskotnik had that chance on 2.
44:17Dropped at second slip by VVS Laxman.
44:19That changed his mindset.
44:21From then on he just thought it was going to be his day.
44:23And indeed it was.
44:25121 from 109 deliveries.
44:27He did almost everything he could
44:29to put England on the road today.
44:31And he did it to victory.
44:33Unlucky to be a judge to LVW.
44:35That was not a good decision.
44:37India's bowlers, well, they had their problems too.
44:39In the end,
44:41Coolheads from Harvard and Sing
44:43had a terrible first spell.
44:45Jaskotnik sorted him out.
44:47But he kept his head as the game wore on.
44:49Picked up the useful wicket at that stage
44:51of Jeremy's name.
44:53Ajit Agarkar, 3 wickets for 50.
44:55Bowling at the end there
44:57where he slowed his pace down.
44:59Kept his concentration intact.
45:012 for 42.
45:03England, it seems,
45:05wouldn't have got close with him.
45:07They were very much in with a chance
45:09of a famous victory.
45:11Well, the game turned on Jaskotnik's dismissal.
45:13Very much in and on course to win the game.
45:15You mentioned it,
45:17that the middle order just didn't support enough.
45:19It needed one of those,
45:21a Sane or Flintoff or Michael Vaughan
45:23to get a 50.
45:25If that would have been the case,
45:27England would have come through
45:29by the skin of their teeth.
45:31They've done very well
45:33and taken nothing away from India.
45:35They've won the game.
45:37They've hit the boards running.
45:39Six-match series.
45:41If this is anything to go by,
45:43this is going to be a terrific series.
45:45It was a team effort by India.
45:47Mongia scored 71,
45:49but everybody chipped in.
45:51Ganguly, 42.
45:53Tendulkar, 36.
45:55And an aspect of the game
45:57is that every batsman scored quickly,
45:59which just shows you
46:01when we were saying
46:03that the guys as bold...
