Taiwan's former President Tsai Ing-wen has publicly addressed the island’s wave of legislative recall campaigns for the first time, calling it “part of democracy.” Tsai made the remarks during a speech at the University of Cambridge as part of her private tour of the United Kingdom. Her visit includes engagements with Taiwanese students and academic leaders, including a stop at SOAS, University of London, home to one of Europe’s leading Taiwan studies centers.

00:16Why are they so enthusiastic about participating?
00:21And, of course, my answer is that they would like to do that after decades of war so terrible.
00:28But that is something inherent and deep in their mind.
00:33That is, they want to make sure Taiwan is okay.
00:38Because there's a threat across the street.
00:42Tsai was speaking after delivering a speech at the University of Cambridge, part of her multi-day tour of the UK, which she is visiting in a private capacity.
00:50On Saturday, she visited SOAS, University of London, where she met with Taiwanese students and the heads of the Center of Taiwan Studies, one of Europe's leading schools researching Taiwan.
