00:21And in the Vatican City, the inaugural mass of recently elected Pope Leo XIV took place.
00:38And in Spain, local residents and environmentalists take to the streets of Tenerife to protest against mass tourism and its environmental impact on the Canary Islands.
00:51Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:58We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:12In the United States, at least two people died after the Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtémoc collided on Saturday with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
01:20Authorities confirmed that the vessel had 227 people on board, 22 of whom were injured, two of them in critical condition, while two died due to serious injuries and another 27 were transferred to receive treatment.
01:31The two deceased were crew members of the ship.
01:33It was learned that the accident took place at 9 p.m. local time on Saturday when two masts of the sailboat broke upon impact with the structures of the Brooklyn Bridge.
01:42Municipal Emergency Services acted quickly to attend to the situation and provide the affected people with the necessary medical assistance.
01:49We were saying goodbye to all the guys who were leaving. The ship had already departed. A few seconds after it left the dock where it was, we suddenly saw all the lights, how they collided, hit the bridge and they all fell underneath.
02:11In Palestine, the number of people killed after a new Israeli airstrike in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip has risen to 36.
02:33According to local media, the dead and injured were transferred from the Al Mawasi area southwest of Anjunis to different hospitals.
02:41Likewise, authorities reported scenes of chaos and despair as rescuers tried to pull the injured out of the rubble.
02:47The international community continues to press for a ceasefire while the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian engulf worsens every day.
02:55Israel's military offensives have so far left more than 53,200 Palestinians dead and more than 120,600 wounded.
03:15The Israeli regime announced a new ground operation against Palestine in order to intensify these aggressions in the Gaza Strip.
03:22The Israeli army reported a military advance in the Gaza Strip dubbed Operation Gideon Shariot as part of its ethnic cleansing policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
03:32In the last days, the people of Gaza are facing a health crisis due to the new Israeli bombardments against hospital facilities which were treating thousands of wounded civilians.
03:42According to the last report, the few functioning hospitals received more than 360 wounded as a consequence of the Zionist aggressions in civilian areas of the enclave.
03:57Israel staged a new wave of demonstrations against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to demand an end to the genocide against the population of the Gaza Strip.
04:05Thousands of Israeli citizens took to the streets of Tel Aviv to show their rejection of Netanyahu's policies.
04:11Demonstrators denounced that the new genocidal escalation by the Zionist government against the Strip puts at risk the lives of the Israelis held in the coastal enclave.
04:19They also warned that the government is leading Israel to a senseless political war and demanded the end of aggressions against Palestine.
04:34And the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is an accomplice to crimes committed by Israel against the Gaza Strip.
04:39Through a statement, the Palestinian authorities of the Gaza Strip accused the U.S. President of being responsible for the widespread famine in the enclave.
04:48In this sense, they affirmed that the Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid in Israel-occupied areas in Gaza is the result of a pact between Tel Aviv and third countries, among them the United States.
05:00They further stressed that the Washington narrative of the Zionist genocide is a media discourse to maintain Israeli policies of starvation, persecution and death of Palestinian civilians.
05:16And social organizations in Palestine warned that at least 65,000 children are at risk of death due to the destruction and shortage of food resulting from the Israeli genocide against the Gaza Strip.
05:27According to reports, Palestinian women and children are the most affected by the starvation policies implemented by the Zionist regime in that Palestinian enclave.
05:37Israel's decision to prevent the delivery of human maternity to the occupied areas led to the closure of bakeries and the parallelization of activities by social organizations that provide food to the Palestinian people.
05:48In this sense, the social organizations accused the Tel Aviv regime of implementing famine policies as a tool to advance in the extermination of the Gaza Strip.
05:56And the United Nations denounced the increase in the rates of acute food insecurity and child malnutrition worldwide during 2024.
06:12According to the report, more than 295 million people in fish-free countries suffered acute levels of hunger, while child malnutrition reached high levels, especially in the most vulnerable regions such as the Gaza Strip and countries like Mali and Yemen, where at least 30 million children suffered the consequences of the most critical feeding phase.
06:32The analysis highlights the worsening of acute food insecurity, which affected 22.6% of the assessed population in that period, motivated by economic shocks, conflicts, extreme weather events and forced displacement, among other causes.

07:22Pope Leo XIV called for a united church against hatred and a citizen that marginalizes the poor and exploits the earth.
07:29The Catholic leader gave his message before thousands of faithful during the homily of his investiture mass.
07:34Before more than 150 delegations from countries around the world and from other religions, as well as thousands of Catholic parishioners, Leo XIV received this Sunday the Palium and the Fisherman's Ring, symbols of the papal power.
07:47During the ceremony, the new pontiff was visibly moved when Cardinal Filipe Luis Antonio Tagli placed the ring on his hand.
07:58Pope Leo XIV called for the construction of a church based on unity and communion.
08:08Brothers and sisters, I would like our greatest desire to be a united church as a sign of unity and communion, a starter for a reconciled world.
08:23In our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, by fear of what's different, by an economic paredium that exploits the earth's resources and marginalizes the poor.
08:51And we want to be, within this mass, a seed for unity, communion and fraternity.
08:58Also, Pablo XIV in his message makes reference to those enduring the Israeli genocide on the Gaza Strip.
09:06Rejoicing in faith and communion, we cannot forget those brothers and sisters suffering the war in Gaza. The children, families and elderly survivors reduced to hunger.

10:15And polls voted Sunday in presidential elections at a time of heightened tensions due to the

11:19What do I want to do?
11:21For there to be peace and order, for them to set normal times, for the courts to be courts,
11:26for justice to be justice.
11:28And on Sunday, the Romanians were choosing a new president in a tense runoff between a
11:34hard-right nationalist and a pro-EU-centrist, the race pits George Simeon, the 38-year-old
11:40leader of the hard-right alliance for the unity of the Romanians, or against Bucharest's

11:48The vote which came on after the cancellation of the previous elections over allegations
11:52of electoral violations and Russian interference plunged the country into this worst political
11:57crisis in decades.

13:35Welcome back.
13:36In the finest island of Tenerife, dozens of people took to the streets to protest against
13:45mass tourism and its environmental impact on the Canary Islands.
13:49On Sunday, local residents and environmentalists demonstrated under the slogan, there is a limit
13:54to what the Canary Islands can take, to bring attention to their demands for a more
13:58sustainable and equitable tourism.
14:01Others call for the implementation of an eco-tax so that tourists can contribute to the preservation
14:06of the environment and the urge for housing purchases by non-residents to be regulated.
14:11According to the Canary Islands Statistics Institute in 2024, the islands got 18 million visitors.
14:17However, local residents say such influx does not translate into benefits, but has provoked
14:22housing prices to skyrocket.
14:34Rent prices are over the top.
14:36No local resident can afford to buy a house.
14:39The houses being built are for wealthy people whose income exceeds that of ordinary Canary Island residents.
14:45That is why we have come here to protest.
14:50I don't think this model can be profitable in the long run, that's why I would like to see more opportunities
14:54and diversification, so that it would prioritize local residents.
15:00We are here also standing for Tenerife, because everything that is happening on the island translates
15:05into an increased energy demand, and especially in the southeast area, we have seen the dire
15:10environmental consequences of the expansion of wind farms in recent years.
15:15Brazilian public organizations meant to build actions in support of Cuba in the face of the
15:22blockade imposed by the United States.
15:24The 19th Paulista Convention of Solidarity with Cuba, political analysts, journalists,
15:29authorities of the Cuban Consulate in San Paolo, and several social referents
15:33debated the new scenarios within the framework of Cuba's entry into the BRICS.
15:37It is important to mention that Cuba's entry into the block represents a great opportunity
15:42to combat the criminal actions of the United States.
15:45The event was held at the July 9th occupation.
15:48The space is an emblem of the social struggles of Sao Paulo, the largest city in the country.
16:12The 22nd Hawaiian Great Wall Marathon in China took place on Saturday in Jizu Tianjin, on the
16:22outskirts of Beijing.
16:231,219 runners were taken on to the historic structure, where they needed to conquer 5,164 steps.
16:32Participants also passed through landscapes and villages of the rural province of Tianjin.
16:37The runners traveled from all over the world to the event in China in order to combine vacation with
16:41adventure and running.
16:44In total, people from 52 nations participated in the 22nd Great Wall Marathon.
16:49The biggest group was from the U.S. with 122 runners.
16:53The Hawaiian Great Wall Marathon started in 1999.
16:57The racing course included the Hawaiian section of the Great Wall and local villages.
17:03It was absolutely amazing.
17:08Absolutely amazing.
17:09It just, everything was, it actually flew by.
17:12There was so much to see and the people were amazing and the scenery and the wall and yeah,
17:18it just took my breath away.
17:20felt good in the beginning, made it up the wall and then just cruising on the flat and then
17:25probably two thirds of the race, legs started cramping up and it was a bit more difficult
17:30from there.
17:31But, pushed through, made it up the wall one more time and here we are feeling okay right
17:36now.
17:37I enjoyed the views and the downhill.
17:41The last peak was very, very tough.
17:43But, we got there and it's lovely to see so many different nationalities come together
17:48and run it.
17:49The two volumes of the over 2,300 year old Sidanku Silk Manuscripts arrived at Beijing
18:05Capital International Airport after being returned by the Smithsonian's National Museum
18:09of Asian Art.
18:10The Silk Manuscripts, which consist of three volumes, were unearthed in 1942 from the Sidanku
18:16Silk Manuscripts, Central China's Hunan Province and were illegally taken to the United States
18:21in 1946.
18:22As the only known silk manuscripts from the Warring States period on earth in China, the
18:28Sidanku Silk Manuscripts are the earliest silk text discovered to date, representing the
18:32earliest known example of a classical Chinese book in the True Sense.
18:36The returned volumes will be sent to the administration's cultural relics warehouse after inspection
18:42and will meet the public in National Museum of China in July.
