05:20Police headquarters.
05:22Oh, yes, Dylan.
05:27I'll notify Dick Tracy at once.
05:33Calling car 15.
05:35Calling car 15.
05:37Car 15.
05:39Car 15, Patton speaking.
05:41Contact Dick Tracy at once.
05:43Have him go to the Flawless Fur Warehouse.
05:45Dylan reports some shenanigans.
05:47Busted fuse box in the garage.
05:49Then tell him to call...
05:51Then tell him to call an electrician,
05:53not Dick Tracy.
05:54Now wait a minute, Pat.
05:56The night watchman's disappeared.
05:57It might be homicide.
05:59Oh, that's different.
06:00I'll tell Tracy right away.
06:03Roger.
06:05Penny's for a blind old man.
06:08Penny's for a blind old man.
06:11Hello, sightless.
06:12Hi, Patton.
06:14Is it a nice night?
06:15Lovely night, lovely night.
06:16Thank you very much.
06:27Hey, Jigger, come here.
06:35Well, what's on your mind, copper?
06:37Where's Tracy?
06:38In the back room, snooping around.
06:40Say, why don't you bloodhounds hold your conventions someplace else?
06:43We like the atmosphere around here.
06:45It's so wholesome.
06:47Looking for me, Pat?
06:49Yeah, we have to make a call.
06:51Oh, you find out what you're looking for, Tracy?
06:53No, and see that I don't.
06:55I understand Hatchet Harry's been hanging around here.
06:57Why, that's a big mistake.
06:59Say, you know I run a respectable joint.
07:01Do I?
07:02Come on, Pat.
07:04Come back again, Mr. Tracy.
07:06Bring the folks.
07:08Penny's for a blind old man.
07:11Sightless, I want you to do me a favor.
07:13What is it, Mr. Tracy?
07:14I want to know what's going on in Jigger's back room.
07:16Mr. Tracy, you know I can't see a thing.
07:18Now, keep your eyes open, will you?
07:23Five bucks.
07:25He put that coffee on while I was in here.
07:29Ten minutes later, when I came back,
07:31the coffee was boiling over, the lights were out,
07:34and there was no halts.
07:35Did this watchman ever leave the job before?
07:37No, I'm sure of that, because he was a most reliable man.
07:40That's why I'm afraid something happened to him.
07:42What did you do after you called headquarters?
07:44I called Mr. Humphreys.
07:45He's the owner of the place here,
07:46because all the doors were unlocked.
07:48Did you take a look around inside?
07:50No, I thought we'd best wait till Mr. Humphreys came.
07:53Let's see what happened to the lights.
08:02Those fuses were yanked out on purpose.
08:04See if you can dig some up, Pat, so we can have some light.
08:06Right.
08:26Who's that?
08:27Who's that?
08:30It's the police, Mr. Humphreys.
08:32Well, you gave me a scare.
08:34I guess everything's all right.
08:36There's a fortune of furs in that vault tonight.
08:38This is Detective Tracy from headquarters.
08:40You'd better take a look inside, Mr. Humphreys.
08:42I'd rather wait to open the vault.
08:44You see, when Officer Dillon phoned me,
08:45I reported his call to my insurance company,
08:47and their representatives are going to meet me here.
08:50We're here, Humphreys.
08:54This is Mr. Tracy of police headquarters.
08:56How are you?
08:57I'm Peter Premium,
08:58vice president of the Honesty Insurance Company.
09:00This is Mr. Cutt, my investigator.
09:02He's not just from headquarters.
09:04That's Dick Tracy, Homicide.
09:06That's right.
09:10Say, Dick, I think I'll go up to the car
09:12and see if I can get a radio pickup on that night watchman.
09:14Okay, Pat.
09:16May I have the combination now, Mr. Humphreys?
09:17Certainly.
09:27Well, it's cleaned out.
09:29Yeah, it's cleaned out, and the ink is hardly drying your policy.
09:32Cutt, I want a thorough investigation of this.
09:34So do I.
09:35I've never had a robbery before.
09:37It's a strange coincidence
09:39that as soon as I switch insurance to the Honesty Company,
09:42I have one.
09:43Are you insinuating that I...
09:44Wait a minute.
09:45I'm not insinuating that I'm not.
09:47I'm insinuating that I'm not.
09:49I'm insinuating that I'm not.
09:51I'm insinuating that I'm not.
09:53I'm insinuating that I'm not.
09:55Wait a minute.
09:57Move your foot.
09:59Looks like we got robbery and you got your homicide.
10:02Mr. Humphreys, may I have an inventory of your loss
10:04with a detailed description of each item?
10:06We can give you that.
10:10There's something wrong about the watchman being slugged
10:12or killed inside the vault.
10:14Something's sour about the whole business.
10:16How many of your employees know the combination of the vault,
10:18Mr. Humphreys?
10:19None of them.
10:20Oh, Dick, Dick, I got a radio report.
10:22The night watchman's turned up.
10:23Where is he?
10:24In the morgue. He's dead.
10:27I better go with him. I'll check with you later.
10:35The medical examiner told us not to move him
10:37until you got here, Mr. Tracy.
10:38I see.
10:42Is that him, Cud?
10:43Yeah, last night watchman, all right.
10:45Where was the body found?
10:46On Macy near Grand.
10:48Apparently thrown out of a car.
10:49Did that kill him?
10:50No, he was dead when he was tossed out.
10:52He was killed by a vicious blow that split his skull.
10:54As you can see, it's pretty ugly.
10:58Looks like he'd been hacked with a cleaver.
11:00I don't think so.
11:01A cleaver wouldn't tear the flesh like that.
11:03Well, it's a sentence, not a bullet or a knife wound.
11:05Here's what he had on him.
11:12Hasn't been fired.
11:13Well, poor fellow never had a chance to use it.
11:16Well, there's not much here.
11:19Hey, there's writing on it.
11:20What?
11:23Well, it isn't very clear.
11:25What do you make of it?
11:26Aw, fam, great.
11:28I'd say it looks like, uh...
11:30Like, uh...
11:31Like what, Pat?
11:32Like scribbling.
11:35We'll take a closer look at this in the laboratory.
11:37Thank you very much, Bill.
11:39When I photographed this,
11:41I darkened all the letters
11:42so it would be reproduced more easily.
11:46Now we take the first word.
11:48First letter is D.
11:50Second letter is an A.
11:52And the last letter is definitely Y.
11:54Now, in between, it could be an N.
11:56Well, it could be anything.
11:58Does Danny mean anything to you?
12:00Not yet.
12:01D-A-I.
12:04Could be an S.
12:05Y.
12:06Could be Daisy.
12:07Now, let's take a look at the next word.
12:12T-H-R-U.
12:13Through.
12:14The next one is easy.
12:15It's got to be out.
12:16And the last one definitely is T.
12:18H-E-N.
12:19Or that could be an M.
12:20Them.
12:21It can't be through of them.
12:23It must be three of them.
12:25Hawks must have been trying to tell us
12:26the three men did the job.
12:28Now, if we'd only figure out this first word.
12:30D-A-I-S-Y.
12:33Daisies.
12:34Three of them.
12:35Three Daisies.
12:36Now we're getting into poetry.
12:38This last scribbling
12:39looks like a license plate number.
12:41Six, seven...
12:43No, that could be a T, you see?
12:46Whenever there's a T in a license plate number...
12:48A truck.
12:49You're right, Pat.
12:50Then maybe he meant
12:51there were three Daisies on a truck.
12:53No, he would have written three Daisies.
12:55Daisy and three of them
12:57indicate two separate ideas.
13:00I think Daisy was the name on the truck.
13:02Then there were three guys driving it.
13:04Yes, I think that's it.
13:05Now, let me have that, will you?
13:07Certainly.
13:10Now, let's take a look at the next word.
13:12D-A-I-S-Y.
13:15Thank you very much, Collins.
13:17Johnson, put this on the air right away.
13:19Get it out to all cars.
13:20Yes, Mr. Tracy.
13:24Calling all cars.
13:26Calling all cars.
13:28Be on the lookout for a truck marked Daisy
13:31driven by three men.
13:33License plate number six, T and two,
13:36blank, blank.
13:37You want it for robbery and murder.
13:39You want it for robbery and murder.
13:48Go take care of that sign.
13:49Right.
14:02That ought to do it.
14:04This dog better be waiting for it.
14:07Cats, cats again.
14:08I don't think enough of cats.
14:13Come on.
14:30Pennies for the blind.
14:33Pennies for the blind.
14:36Bless you, bless you.
14:38Pennies for the blind.
14:40Pennies for the, pennies for the blind.
14:43I don't need it.
14:44Hey, you.
14:45Come on.
15:03Look, Cyprus, how many times do I have to tell you
15:05beggars aren't permitted in here?
15:07How many times do I got to tell you I ain't no beggar?
15:09I'm a merchant.
15:10Well, what are you doing in here, merchant?
15:12I'm looking for two customers of mine.
15:14You talking to me?
15:15No, I...
15:16Well, then they're not here.
15:17Come on.
15:23That's a funny one.
15:44Wait.
16:02Waiting around gives me the jitters, too.
16:04I want my dough and I want it quick.
16:06I want to blow this town.
16:08It ain't ready yet.
16:10Would you stop playing with that cat so I can talk to you?
16:12Well, talk.
16:13The cat don't mind.
16:15Oh, you're such a smart character, ain't you?
16:18You couldn't just hit that night watchman over the head, could you?
16:21You had to get fancy and tear him up.
16:23Now the whole homicide squad's on our tail.
16:25Can't the boss get rid of the stuff?
16:27Nobody'll touch it now.
16:29At first, a bad nut, but he's got to tie him up with a murder.
16:32We'll never get our dough now, never.
16:35All because of you and that itchy hangnail.
16:38You can't use your brains, can you?
16:41Instead of your brains, you got to use that hunk of steel like some stupid animal.
16:44I don't know what's the matter with you.
16:46You're a killer, Claw.
16:48You're nothing but a crazy, stupid killer.
17:05Yeah?
17:07Oh, it's you, boss.
17:09Yeah.
17:12Yeah, I'll be there.
17:15The boss have good news?
17:18Found somebody who's interested.
17:20Wants to see the fuzz tonight.
17:22There, you see, Sam? We're going to get our dough after all.
17:25When are you going?
17:27Got to be at the end of Ham Street in an hour.
17:40Someone in the alley. I was only going to...
17:43Leave it there.
18:10Ham Street.
18:13Ham Street.
18:39Ham Street.
19:10Ham Street.
19:36Please, mister. Please.
19:38I didn't do nothing.
19:42Please, mister.
19:51Let me in, somebody.
19:53Please, let me in.
19:55Yeah, what's going on out here?
19:57You got to let me in there, mister.
19:58No one's allowed in here. Beat it.
19:59But, mister, somebody's going to kill me, I swear.
20:01He's right down there.
20:04Now, look, old man, you're drunk and I'm busy, so beat it, will you?
20:07No, no.
20:08Come on, beat it.
20:09No, but I tell you, he's there someways, mister.
20:11Please, let me...
20:12Let me in. Please, let me in, mister.
20:33Let me in.
20:52You still hanging around?
20:53I was just going, mister.
20:54I'm going to stay right here till you do.
20:56Oh, that'll be fine. Thanks, mister. Thanks.
21:04I... I...
21:28You stick around. I'll be right out.
21:30Okay.
21:32Soft in all the fair Ophelia,
21:34nymph in thy orisons,
21:36be all my sins remembered.
21:39No, no, Vitamin, not like that.
21:41No?
21:42My dear Tess, after 49 years in the theater,
21:45you're telling me...
21:49Well, Dick probably forgot his key.
21:50You let him in, Vitamin.
21:51But don't tell him I'm here.
21:52Something tells me this is what you've been waiting for.
22:02I'm sorry.
22:03Oh, gods, what have we here?
22:05Where's Mr. Tracy?
22:06Mr. Tracy buys his fresh fruit from a dependable dealer.
22:10But I've got to see him. It's important.
22:11You shall not cross this threshold
22:13until you've been thoroughly disinfected.
22:15Take your pediculous presence elsewhere.
22:18But, mister, you don't understand.
22:19I've been through enough tonight.
22:20Well, you're not going through here.
22:23But look, mister, tell him it's about the furs.
22:25They're going to meet the fence
22:26at the end of Hemp Street in half an hour.
22:31All right.
22:49I wonder what that cab was doing here.
22:51Must have brought Tess.
22:52She said she'd be over tonight.
22:56But, Vitamin, he might have been important.
22:58What importance could Dick Tracy
23:00be attached to an impecunious peddler?
23:05Oh, Dick at last.
23:06Hello, Pam.
23:07Hello.
23:08Sorry to be late, Tess.
23:09How long have you been here?
23:10Three acts of Hamlet, going on four.
23:11Greetings from the Melancholy Dane.
23:14Just in time for Miss Alleluia.
23:16Before you go into that, Vitamin,
23:17who was in that cab that just left here?
23:19Oh, merely a person of no consequence.
23:22Vitamin said he was a peddler.
23:23Yes, a peddler with a most grandiloquent name.
23:28Visionary, I believe he called himself.
23:31Visionary?
23:32Could it have been Sightless?
23:33Did Sightless stop by here?
23:35Stopped by.
23:36He practically stormed the gates
23:37like a Trojan army of 12.
23:39But I held the fortress, didn't I, Tess?
23:41Look, Vitamin, Sightless is no ordinary peddler.
23:43That is your opinion.
23:46What did he say?
23:47Why, I made a point of forgetting it immediately.
23:50Look, Vitamin, Sightless wouldn't have come here
23:52if it hadn't been important.
23:53What did he say?
23:54Well, in quaint language all his own,
23:56I believe he mentioned something about
23:58something was going to happen at the end of some street
24:01in some half an hour.
24:04Oh, that's great.
24:05What was going to happen?
24:06I think he said somebody was going to build a fence there.
24:10Build a fence?
24:11Fence.
24:12Maybe it has some connection with the furs.
24:13Yes, yes, he said something about furs too.
24:16Vitamin, Sightless said somebody was going to meet a fence, didn't he?
24:19I suppose that makes sense.
24:21It certainly does.
24:22Now look, try to remember.
24:24At the end of what street did he say?
24:27Let me think.
24:29Let me meditate.
24:32Ah, I think he said it was at the end of Flax Street.
24:37There's no such street.
24:38Well, something like flax.
24:40Rope, flannel, crepe de chine.
24:43That's gabardine.
24:44Rope, flax.
24:47Could it have been Hemp Street?
24:48Hemp Street, that's more like it.
24:50Hemp, flax, a rope by any other name would smell.
24:53Vitamin, see that Tess gets home all right, will you?
24:55Enchanted.
24:56I'll see you later.
24:57Come on, Pat.
25:23Longshot Lily.
25:48So she's in the fencing business.
25:50Do we surprise her?
25:51No, not yet.
25:52What we're interested in is who's going to meet her.
26:00Hey, she's not going to wait.
26:08Dick Tracy.
26:09You're not running out on your date on my account, are you?
26:11Do you think I make dates on street corners?
26:13I just stopped for a moment to light a cigarette.
26:16Is there a law against it?
26:18No, I guess there isn't.
26:19Then I'll be on my way if you don't mind.
26:22Could I give you a lift?
26:23No, thanks.
26:24I'll give you one.
26:25Pat, you can drive Lily's car.
26:26She's coming with me.
26:27Right.
26:28Come on.
26:31What are you trying to pull, Tracy?
26:33You can't treat me like a criminal.
26:35I'm a lady.
26:36A lady with a date.
26:37Who are you going to see, Lily?
26:39Nobody.
26:40I told you I had no date.
26:42Well, you have one now.
26:43Let's go.
26:52What were you doing on Hemp Street?
26:53I told you.
26:54I was on my way home.
26:56I stopped for a few minutes to have a cigarette.
26:59I never could do two things at the same time.
27:01Then why were you so startled when you saw me?
27:04Force of habit, I guess.
27:06Every time I see a cop, I want to get out of his way.
27:09Look, Lily, you and I both know what you were doing there.
27:11What's wrong with parking on Hemp Street?
27:14Ordinarily, nothing.
27:16But two people were to meet there tonight about a little matter of hot furs.
27:20Somebody was going to buy them from somebody who had them to sell.
27:23I'm not interested in furs.
27:25I've got all I need.
27:27And anyway, what would I buy them with, that $60 you've got in your hand?
27:36Lily, did you lose anything tonight?
27:40No.
27:41Well, then I'm a rich man.
27:43Look what I found.
27:44$20,000 stuffed under the front seat of her car.
27:47Is it yours, Lily?
27:49Certainly it's mine.
27:50I won it in a poker game tonight.
27:52Mm, some game.
27:54You're barking up the wrong tree, Tracy.
27:56I'm no quitter.
27:57Poker, yes.
27:58The race is sure.
27:59Long shot Lily, that's me.
28:01Gambling's my dish, not fur robberies.
28:04Okay, Lily.
28:05But you'll have to tell me who lost the $20,000.
28:07And also, who was in the game?
28:09I'll tell you that.
28:10Maybe.
28:11On a witness stand.
28:13Well, give Lily a chance on the witness stand.
28:16Book her on suspicion of murder.
28:17Murder?
28:18Oh, you're bluffing, Tracy.
28:20It's not a bluff, Lily.
28:21I watched him was killed during a robbery tonight.
28:23You can't pin a murder rap on me.
28:25Then start talking.
28:26All right, all right, I'll tell you what happened.
28:28Some guy called me tonight and asked me if I'd be interested in some hot furs, dirt sheep.
28:32I said yes.
28:33He said he'd call me back later, so I waited.
28:35And you called him back?
28:36You don't catch me on that one, Tracy.
28:38I don't know the guy, so I don't have his number.
28:40He called me back.
28:42He said to show up at Hemp Street with the dough.
28:44Somebody meet me there.
28:46Somebody did meet me there, all right.
28:48The rest is history.
28:50Who was it called you, Lily?
28:51He didn't take the trouble to introduce himself.
28:53Who was it?
28:54I swear, Tracy, I don't...
28:55Look, Lily, you're in enough trouble without shielding a murderer.
28:57Who was it?
28:58You've got to believe me, Tracy.
28:59You've got to.
29:00The guy was an absolute stranger.
29:01I don't know how he happened to call me, but he did.
29:03I've got a reputation.
29:04I play long shots.
29:05Even you know that.
29:06I take big chances.
29:07People know it.
29:08It gets around.
29:09Lots of guys know about me, but I don't know about them.
29:12That guy could have been anybody.
29:14Anybody.
29:15Believe me, Tracy, I don't know who it was.
29:17I swear I don't.
29:22Turn this over to the property clerk.
29:24Hold her as a material witness.
29:27This way, please.
29:36You know something, Dick?
29:38I don't think she's lying.
29:39Maybe not.
29:40I'll have a sight.
29:41Let's take a look at her.
29:42Anyway, we'll have to find out from him who was in that back room.
30:02Who's there?
30:03Dick Tracy wants to see you at headquarters.
30:07Okay.
30:08Just a minute.
30:12Come in.
30:18You're not from Tracy.
30:20No.
30:24Just brought back something that belongs to you.
30:28Take them.
30:29They're yours.
30:30They're your trademark, sightless.
30:32Thanks. Thanks.
30:33I found them in the alley back at the Blinken's Row.
30:35No, no.
30:36No, I wasn't there.
30:37You had to tell them, didn't you?
30:38No.
30:39You had to stall it, Tracy.
30:40No, I didn't see them.
30:41I didn't see them.
31:12It's the first door beyond the stairs.
31:20Sightless!
31:42He's gone.
31:43Poor guy.
31:44Just like Hawks.
31:47I didn't see anyone come out as we drove up.
31:49Then there's a chance we've got him trapped in the building.
31:51I'll call headquarters and have the block surrounded.
31:58Do you suppose he was making a phone call when we drove up?
32:00Could be.
32:11DOORBELL RINGS
32:41DOOR CREAKS
32:53GUNSHOT
33:03GUNSHOT
33:08GUNSHOT
33:11GUNSHOT
33:19GUNSHOT
33:22GUNSHOT
33:29How do you like that?
33:30He slugged me.
33:31If you weren't my friend, I'd say you had it coming, do you?
33:34Why didn't you wait until we had the block surrounded?
33:36You know, I was just wondering that myself.
33:38Anyway, I winged him.
33:39And I know now what he used to kill Hawks and Sightless.
33:41I was coming up the stairs...
33:42You can tell me about it on the way down.
33:44He has no right hand.
33:45There's an iron hook attached to his forearm, and that's his weapon.
33:48I saw it, and I felt it.
33:49Maybe you're right.
33:50Come on, I want to show you something.
33:52Look at these scratches.
33:53They're brand new, aren't they?
33:55Say, he uses that hook for everything, doesn't he?
33:57Must have been an important call, or he would never have stopped to use this phone.
34:00You're right.
34:02As a reward for your good work tonight, I'm going to give you a nice, safe job.
34:05Finding out who he was calling.
34:07You mean me?
34:08That's right.
34:09I'll explain in a few minutes.
34:12I'll tell you what these scratches give us, Pat.
34:14What's the first thing you do when you dial a telephone number?
34:16Well, I, uh...
34:17Look for a nickel.
34:18Oh, no.
34:19Oh, I dial the exchange.
34:20That's right.
34:21You dial the first two letters of the exchange.
34:25Now, these scratches appear only in the first two holes.
34:27I get it, Dick.
34:28The exchange the killer was dialing has got to be here.
34:31Correct.
34:32In checking a list of exchanges, you'll find there's only one exchange with a combination of these letters.
34:37B-A for banning.
34:38But what about these other two scratches?
34:40That's even simpler.
34:42Since they appear in the first hole, the killer could only have been dialing the number one twice.
34:46Then we know the number the killer started to dial is banning one, one, something, something.
34:51Now, all we have to do is find the complete number, and we'll know who the killer was trying to call.
34:55But there's lots of telephone numbers that start that way.
34:57I know.
34:58A dozen, maybe.
34:59Sure.
35:00Maybe even as many as a hundred.
35:01Mm-hmm.
35:02And that's why I'm giving you the job, Pat, of finding the exact number.
35:05You mean you want me to call every number starting with B-A-1-1?
35:08Now, look, Dick.
35:09Get to your desk, Pat, and start in.
35:11But, Dick, who do I see is calling, and who am I supposed to be?
35:14A guy's got to know those things.
35:16I can't just walk into something blind.
35:19Find anything, Donovan?
35:20I think this is it, Mr. Tracy.
35:22Well, that looks like the bird, all right.
35:24Mm-hmm.
35:25According to this, he hasn't been around since bootleg days.
35:28Used to be a hijacker.
35:29Coast guard cut around him.
35:31Lost his right hand and crippled his right leg.
35:34Yep, that's him.
35:35Did a stretch in the pen.
35:36Only been out about six months.
35:38Calls himself a lot of things.
35:40But his most popular name is the Claw.
35:42Well, Pat, I guess that's the answer to your question.
35:44Yep.
35:45Shall we send out a pickup on him?
35:46No.
35:47Not yet, anyway.
35:48The Claw isn't in this alone.
35:49Furs aren't in his line.
35:50He wouldn't know how to dispose of them.
35:51Any idea who the higher-up is?
35:53I'm depending on Pat to tell me that.
35:55You mean you want me to imitate this guy?
35:57Use your deepest barren tongue, Miss Patton.
36:00Here's your telephone.
36:01Now, I guess you're all set.
36:05This is the Claw speaking.
36:06No, no, no.
36:08This is the... This is Pat.
36:13This is the Claw speaking.
36:16See that he keeps that pitch, Donovan.
36:18Right.
36:19Now, let me know the minute you get results.
36:20Yes, Dick.
36:21I mean...
36:22Got you, boss.
36:28Hello.
36:29Tess.
36:31Dick, Vitamin's grieving dreadfully.
36:33I feel that you ought to speak to him.
36:35What's the matter with him?
36:36Well, his conscience.
36:38The news about Sightless came over the radio and...
36:40Well, dear, I told him that we all felt bad about it,
36:42but take a look for yourself.
36:50Snap out of it, Vitamin.
36:52It's true you did send Sightless away from the house,
36:54but you don't...
36:55If I hadn't, he'd still be alive.
36:57The solution to your entire dilemma
36:59was on the lips of that peddler,
37:00and I silenced them forever.
37:03Now our needs must atone for me crying.
37:07But, Vitamin, there's nothing you can do now.
37:09Nothing?
37:11There's nothing so difficult to do as...
37:13Nothing?
37:16What is it, Dick?
37:17Vitamin, there is something you can do,
37:20but I don't know whether you...
37:21But to me no buts, sir.
37:23Put me to the test.
37:26Hello?
37:27This is the Claw speaking.
37:31I quit, wise guy.
37:33What did they say this time?
37:34This is the Claw, eh?
37:35Then go scratch yourself.
37:37Insults. That's all I get.
37:39A man in my position.
37:40Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh.
37:41I'm sorry, Pat. You're in my custody.
37:43Orders from the chief. He just called.
37:44Where was he calling from? Home in bed?
37:46No, he's on his way to Humphreys.
37:48What do I care where he was on his way to?
37:50Well, that's so you'll know where to report to him
37:51after you've located his man.
37:54Then ask him where he'll be a year from Thursday.
37:57Let's see. Where was I?
38:04Oh, Tracy.
38:05Good evening, Mr. Humphreys.
38:06I hope it's not too late for a call.
38:08Certainly not. Come in.
38:11Sit down, Mr. Tracy.
38:15I suppose if you had any good news,
38:17I wouldn't have to ask you.
38:20That's right.
38:21I had hoped to recover your furs tonight,
38:23but something went wrong.
38:24You mean they're still in the city?
38:26I'm sure of it.
38:27And we hope to get them back for you shortly.
38:29Please don't take offense at this, Tracy,
38:31but tell me frankly,
38:32did Premium ask you to come over here and tell me that?
38:35No. Why should he?
38:37Well, tonight the period of grace
38:39for the insurance company expires,
38:41and they have to produce either the furs or the money.
38:44You think they'll stall on their settlement?
38:46It was just an idea.
38:48What I really wanted to ask you was,
38:50how long has it been since the combination
38:52was chained on your vault?
38:54The insurance company?
38:55Yes.
38:56How long has it been since the combination
38:57was chained on your vault?
38:59The insurance company insisted on it being changed
39:01when they wrote the policy.
39:03Who actually made the change?
39:04I don't know.
39:06Cud brought a serviceman over with him.
39:08Well, thank you very much, Mr. Humphreys.
39:10Yes, sir.
39:11I hope to have some news for you soon.
39:13Okay.
39:15And the same to you, with many unhappy returns.
39:18Dick just called again.
39:19He seemed disappointed with you.
39:21I'm not too happy about him either.
39:26Hello, this is the Claw speaking.
39:28About time you called.
39:32Hey, hey!
39:33He knows me.
39:34What number did you call?
39:35I don't know.
39:36I'll have it traced. Keep talking.
39:37What do I say? What do I talk about?
39:38Furs, women, anything.
39:39Furs, women, anything.
39:42Yeah, I'm still on the line, boss.
39:45Well, you see...
39:47I...
39:48I couldn't, boss.
39:49I ran into a little trouble.
39:53Donovan, Donovan.
39:54He hung up.
39:56What number did you dial?
39:57I don't know.
39:58Well, think, think.
39:59I can't think.
40:00You can't think.
40:01No, no.
40:02Fine, fine, fine.
40:17Oh, hello, Tracy.
40:19Hello, Cud.
40:20Who is it?
40:21I'm Tracy, remember me?
40:23I found your corridor open, so I walked right in.
40:26Keeping rather unusual business hours, aren't you?
40:28Did you find out anything?
40:29Did you know that somebody changed the combination on Humphrey's vault shortly before the robbery?
40:34Mm-hmm.
40:35One of the conditions under which we wrote the policy.
40:37It's not unusual.
40:38Should be done periodically anyway.
40:40Do you know the new combination?
40:41I do.
40:42I went with the serviceman that did the job.
40:45Do you know it too, Mr. Premium?
40:47Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.
40:50Say, what are you driving at, Tracy?
40:52Are you suggesting that Cud and I are in on this robbery?
40:54I'm not suggesting anything yet.
40:56But somebody provided the thieves with the combination on that vault.
41:06Shall I take it?
41:07No, I'll answer it.
41:10Hello?
41:11Yes?
41:13No, I can't go into that tonight.
41:14Have them call me back tomorrow.
41:16Is that the Claw?
41:17Who is the Claw?
41:18He's a two-time killer, and he's got Humphrey's furs.
41:20He tried to sell them to a fence, but something went wrong.
41:23Well, if you know who he is, why don't you arrest him?
41:25I don't know where he is.
41:26But as he failed in contacting the fence,
41:28I thought he might call you tonight
41:30and offer to sell the furs back at a big cut under their real value.
41:33Well, we did have such an idea, but we didn't know who had them.
41:36Tonight's our deadline.
41:38And if we don't get the furs back, we'll have to settle with Humphrey's.
41:41An experienced fur thief would know that.
41:44The Claw has no experience with furs.
41:47But the man behind him has.
41:51Pat!
41:52Pat, what in the world happened to you?
41:55I've got it, Dick. I've got it.
41:56You've got what?
41:57The man higher up. Banning 1126.
41:59Well, who is it?
42:00Humphrey's.
42:01Well, how do you like that?
42:02The guy figures to collect $100,000 on his policy
42:05and still have his furs.
42:07Are you sure of this, Tracy?
42:08I'm sure.
42:09And I've got a crooked finger to prove it.
42:12It adds up, Cud.
42:13Humphrey's is counting on you.
42:14I'm counting on you.
42:15I'm counting on you.
42:16I'm counting on you.
42:18It adds up, Cud.
42:19Humphrey's is counting on you buying back the furs tonight.
42:21Sure.
42:22He gets his furs back in the morning.
42:24Plus his cut of the dough we pay to get him back.
42:26And, Tracy, why don't you do something?
42:27Why don't you lock him up?
42:28No, no. Let me get my hands on him.
42:30By locking him up now, you risk losing your furs.
42:33And we might never catch the killer.
42:35But Humphrey's can tell us where the furs are hidden.
42:37Don't you think he'll deny us connection with the crime?
42:39That means a trial.
42:41Giving the killer more time than ever to skip town with the furs.
42:44That sounds reasonable.
42:45Well, then what do we do?
42:46You and I are going to stick right here.
42:48I'm more certain than ever now that the killer will give you a call tonight.
42:51You and Pat pay Humphrey's a friendly little call.
42:54Right.
42:55I think I'm going to enjoy this.
42:57You know, Tracy, I got to admit it.
43:00I'm kind of glad you dropped in here tonight.
43:16Hello?
43:30Is he back there?
43:32I'll see.
43:33No, he ain't in.
43:42That's funny.
43:45He was supposed to make a very important call for me tonight.
43:56Why, Cud, I didn't expect to see you here tonight.
43:59Any news about the furs?
44:00Plenty.
44:01Oh, Humphrey's.
44:02One of the first rules of our company is to always keep our clients covered.
44:06I don't know what you mean.
44:07Step inside.
44:08Just a minute.
44:32He's not here.
44:33Glad he's got to be here somewhere.
44:43Hey, he's here.
44:45He's drunk.
44:46Let me see.
44:48He's not drunk.
44:49He's been hurt.
44:53Well, looks like he added another tattoo mark to his collection.
44:56Is he dead?
44:58Just about.
45:01Hey.
45:03He looked to me like he had time to call the insurance company.
45:06Maybe we ought to help him.
45:08I've had some experience knifing out bullets.
45:10Well, why waste the time?
45:12Look, Ernie, we're the perfect setup here.
45:14There'd be twice as much dough on it for us if we called the insurance company.
45:17Just you and me.
45:19Yeah, but what's going to happen when he finds out we double-crossed him?
45:21By that time, we'll be seeing the world.
45:23Come on.
45:31That guy and his cats will...
45:41Maybe your hunch was wrong, Tracy.
45:43There could have been a slip-up somewhere.
45:50Hello?
45:51Is this the Honesty Insurance Company?
45:53Yes.
45:54Now, who am I speaking to?
45:55Peter Premium.
45:56Who's this?
45:57Never mind who this is.
45:59Look, how'd you like to get them Humphrey Force back tonight, huh?
46:03All right, listen carefully.
46:05$50,000 back of the blanket skull in half an hour.
46:08Come by yourself.
46:09$50,000.
46:12Back of the blinking skull.
46:13And I'm warning you.
46:15No cops.
46:16I understand.
46:19No cops.
46:21What do you know about that?
46:22Back of the blinking skull.
46:24Are you going, Tracy?
46:26Alone?
46:28You heard what the man said.
46:29No cops.
46:31Good luck.
46:33Buy a pencil from a poor blind man.
46:37Buy a pencil from a poor blind man.
46:40Buy a pencil from...
46:42Prepare a random shekel for a myopic mendicant.
46:47Peasant.
46:51Ye gods, tis now the very witching time of night.
46:55But not a suspicious character in sight.
46:59Methinks I have failed, Dick Tracy.
47:05Hey, Sam.
47:06What's the matter?
47:07Look.
47:08What?
47:09Sightless.
47:13What's the matter with you?
47:14You believe in ghosts?
47:15Come on.
47:16Yeah, but...
47:17I said come on.
47:18Hey.
47:19Buy a pencil from a poor blind man.
47:26Expecting someone to show in about 15 minutes.
47:28Let him in.
47:29And no one else.
47:30Okay, Sam.
47:50My most profound apologies.
47:56On your way, brother.
47:57We've got to draw the line somewhere.
47:58There's no moochers.
47:59That epithet is applicable only to him who is afflicted with impecuniosity.
48:04Come again?
48:05Come again.
48:06I haven't left.
48:08There, keeper of the hooch.
48:10Okay, name it.
48:12Fetch me something savory and salubrious.
48:15Concocted perhaps from citrus grown in the gardens of Grenada.
48:19Chilled by the snows of San Marita.
48:22Served in a chalice by Cellini.
48:25Sorry, Bob.
48:26We ain't got any.
48:27In language comporting with your intelligence.
48:30Lemonade.
48:32Lemonade?
48:34Dear me.
48:35Doesn't anyone understand English anymore?
48:42We're going to have another salad.
49:12Come on, smile, kid.
49:32Smile.
49:33Another few minutes, you and me, it's going to be 50 grand, Richie.
50:03Somebody winged you, huh?
50:10Just a scratch.
50:18Had me all cold for a while, though.
50:21I think you ought to let Jiggy take a look at that.
50:25He's pretty good when it thinks.
50:27I'll be all right.
50:30I think you ought to take him to see Jiggy.
50:32Okay.
50:35I got to stick around.
50:37You can't go around like that.
50:41I've done it before.
50:42I think Sam was right.
50:43You ought to have that looked after.
50:47You guys sound like you're trying to get rid of me.
50:50Oh, no.
50:51No, you're wrong.
50:56You sure act like maybe a black cat ran across your pad.
51:08You're wrong about me, Sam.
51:10I can't dance.
51:11I had nothing to do with it.
51:12Get the gun, Rich.
51:13I had nothing to do with it.
51:14Let go!
51:33No, Claw, no!
51:34I didn't want to hurt you!
51:58No tricks.
52:03Yes?
52:04Boss?
52:06This is the Claw.
52:09I just wanted to tell you.
52:11Somebody from the insurance company's on his way down.
52:14I'll take him to the junkyard on Primrose Street.
52:17We'll have our dough in a few minutes.
52:20And, uh, boss, uh, we'll only have to split it two ways.
52:28Fine, Claw.
52:30Fine.
52:32What's the matter?
52:33Anything wrong?
52:34No.
52:37Everything's swell, Claw.
52:41Everything's swell.
52:43It's a frame-up!
52:45I've been waiting for this.
53:14Okay, Jigger, you lead the way.
53:27Lead the way where?
53:28Hey, you cops can't shove me around.
53:30I run a respectable joint.
53:31We'll talk that over in the back room.
53:32Get going.
53:46Let me out of here!
53:47Let me out of here!
53:52Oh, Dick Tracy.
53:54I'll be right with you, Vitamin.
54:04Okay, Jigger, where'd he go?
54:05I don't know, Tracy.
54:06I know.
54:07I heard everything.
54:08Uh, the furs are in the junkyard on, on, uh...
54:09Not Black Street.
54:10Uh, no, on, uh, Primrose Street.
54:13Vitamin, I'll make you police commissioner for this.
54:15Call headquarters and have them send a squad car.
54:17Aye, aye, sir.
54:19Hey, these pipes are hot, Tracy.
54:21Better get used to the heat, Jigger.
54:50I'll be right back.
55:19I'll be right back.
55:47I'll be right back.
56:15I know you're there.
56:39Come out.
57:08I know you're there.
57:37I know you're there.
58:06I know you're there.
58:35I couldn't get that police commissioner's job for you, Vitamin.
58:44No?
58:45That spilled for a while.
58:46This is to show our appreciation.
58:48Haven't you anything to say, Vitamin?
58:50For the first time in my life, I'm speechless.
58:53You know, I think we should give you a badge more often.
58:56Oh, uh, fortunately, I happen to have a little speech of acceptance with me.
59:03My dear friends, cannons to right of the...
59:05Vitamin, I have a table reserved for us at a nearby restaurant.
59:08Suppose you say that speech until then.
59:09Oh, Dick, how nice, dancing.
59:11Why not?
59:12Tracy, I'm glad you're still here.
59:13I just got a report on Hatchet Harry.
59:15What about him?
59:16One of our men spotted him in the freight yards.
59:18Sorry, Tess.
59:19Come on, Pat.
59:21Well, Vitamin, you won't mind taking Tess to dinner for me, will you?
59:24Don't you need me?
59:25I think we can manage.
59:28Sometimes I wish I'd been born a super criminal.
59:31Why, my dear?
59:33Because then I might get to see something of Mr. Dick Tracy.
59:36Oh.
