"Prince of Foxes" (1949) is an American historical adventure film directed by Henry King and based on the novel by Samuel Shellabarger. The film stars Tyrone Power, Orson Welles, and Wanda Hendrix, and is set in Renaissance Italy during the 16th century.
The story follows Andrea Orsini (played by Tyrone Power), a cunning and ambitious artist, soldier, and diplomat who serves the notorious Cesare Borgia (Orson Welles). Tasked with helping Borgia expand his power by securing a strategic alliance through marriage, Orsini finds his loyalty tested when he meets the noble and courageous Lady Camilla (Wanda Hendrix) and her husband, Count Varano.
As Orsini becomes increasingly disillusioned with Borgia’s ruthless ambitions, he must choose between duty and conscience, ultimately risking everything to fight for justice and love.
Filmed on location in Italy, Prince of Foxes is notable for its lush cinematography, detailed period settings, and strong performances, especially from Power and Welles. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Black-and-White Cinematography and Best Costume Design.
