The ACT government’s online tool for reporting streets maintenance issues and hazards – including graffiti and dumping – has come under scrutiny. It is hoped an inquiry into Fix My Street will determine why it can take months or years to get a problem resolved.

00:00When it comes to getting streetlights fixed, dangerous trees removed or potholes filled
00:08in, some Canberrans often wait for months.
00:11We use it because we have a few problems around here.
00:15A dump car out the front that's been there for a couple of months, the spiderweb's all
00:20over it, it's unregistered, but nothing seems to get done.
00:23We found that a lot of the issues that we bring up are sometimes going to a hard basket
00:29and just get deleted.
00:30The ACT Government's Fix My Street platform is meant to be the one-stop shop for reporting
00:37issues, but for many users it takes persistence in numbers to see change.
00:42If more people are interested and they put it all together in a petition, it generally
00:48has a fairly good response.
00:50The Canberra Liberals have been calling for an inquiry into Fix My Street, with a motion
00:55passed in the Legislative Assembly this week.
00:58It seems quite clear that it's not working for community and I think it's in the Government's
01:03best interest to get their feedback through a committee inquiry, so then they can improve
01:08on their own service delivery.
01:10It's a platform even the Minister admits has its problems, including incorrect notices
01:16saying an incident has been resolved.
01:19Fix My Street has gone through a lot of major improvements, but the one thing that's still
01:26irking me is that response that you received when the action that you get back is no action
01:34was required.
01:35In 2024 there was a backlog of 38,000 Fix My Street requests.
01:41It's since been reduced to around 10,000 and the Government believes it is keeping up with demand.
01:47We receive about 1,000 requests a week and we deal with about 1,000 requests a week.
01:52So that's within my tolerable range.
01:55But some Canberrans are concerned they're not being heard.
01:59Like with this car over here, nobody takes any notice.
02:02Parking is very difficult.
02:04It's difficult and it doesn't belong to any of the residents along here.
02:09Just hopefully they might speed up a little bit.
02:12Hopes for a quicker fix.
