00:00First practice at Imola, a legendary circuit with a history to match any on the F1 calendar
00:04and the home of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in recent years.
00:08Quite a weekend for McLaren last time out, their drivers securing a double-one-two,
00:12Lando Norris victorious in the Miami Sprint and Oscar Piastri with the spoils in Sunday's Grand Prix.
00:18The Australian, the first McLaren driver to win three consecutive races since Micah Hackenden back in 1997-1998.
00:25And the papaya cars powered to the top again here, Piastri with the bragging rights again
00:30with a time of 1 minute 16.545, just three hundredths ahead of Norris.
00:37Alex Albon matched his best finish of the season last time out, P5 in Melbourne and Miami.
00:43Williams definitely seemed to be a team on the up.
00:45The tie driver was flirting with Imola's extremes, taking to both grass and gravel at times.
00:51He finished P8, but teammate Carlos Sainz, perhaps feeling a bit hard done by in Miami,
00:56was the best of the Grove drivers, finishing a fine P3.
01:00Several big changes at Alpine since the last round.
01:03Oliver Oaks has resigned as team principal, the third person to leave that post in the last two years.
01:09Executive advisor Flavio Priatore will be covering the extra duties for the time being, starting here in Imola.
01:15We'll also see Franco Colapinto rejoin the grid, taking over from Jack Doohan in one of the French outfit's cars alongside Pierre Gasly.
01:24For, according to the team, the next five rounds, Doohan will remain with Alpine as its first choice reserve.
01:29The Argentine driver upset Yuki Tsunoda halfway through the session, the Red Bull man feeling blocked.
01:35Colapinto also found the gravel at the Villeneuve chicane.
01:38Gasly, the more experienced of the pair, nabbed a commendable sixth spot on the timing tables,
01:43his new colleague, down in 17th.
01:46Ferrari can count two home races on the calendar these days.
01:49Aside from this one, they've got Monza to look forward to in September.
01:53Charles Leclerc dipped a wheel in the gravel at Turn 12, the section known as Aqua Minerale,
01:57and later went even wider at 15, the Variante Alta.
02:02In fact, the man from Monaco could hardly keep out of the loose stuff, spraying stones on multiple occasions.
02:07Scuderia teammate Lewis Hamilton, winner here in 2020, went across the grass at the same place,
02:13and later complained of brake problems.
02:16That car doesn't want to stop.
02:18Despite his problems, the seven-time champion finished a creditable P5,
02:22the wayward Leclerc on the second page, P12 at the flag.
02:26For Kimi Antonelli, this is truly a home race.
02:29The 18-year-old goes to school just down the road in Bologna,
02:32and has bought a slew of classmates and teachers as his VIP guests this weekend.
02:38The Mercedes rookie also has a special helmet designed for the occasion,
02:42resplendent in the azuri blue and the Italian flag colors,
02:46incorporating a tribute to Ayrton Senna,
02:49the man who holds the record for the most poles here,
02:52and who tragically lost his life at this circuit back in 1994.
02:56Antonelli's team was given a little help by one George Russell,
02:59his eagle-eyed, silver-arrow colleague, offering some of his own insights.
03:04Lots of bottom-in-air bike wear from Kimi.
03:08Exit turn four, entry turn five.
03:12George Russell will drive your car, and he'll tell you about the other one.
03:15That's incredible feedback.
03:16Russell continued his recent fine form, P4, for his efforts in FP1.
03:20Antonelli only P13.
03:23Red Bull have brought upgrades to Imola,
03:25but both their drivers were playing down the significance on press day.
03:28In FP1, Max Verstappen wasn't feeling completely comfortable.
03:32I can't rely on the rear.
03:34It's a skill set.
03:35It's thing everywhere.
03:36I'm certain.
03:37His concerns evidenced by this big slide at Rivazza.
03:41Well, that's a nice illustration of exactly why, then,
03:44trying to get out of the final corner.
03:46Max finished in seventh spot, Yuki down in 16th.
03:50The session finished a couple of minutes early
03:51when Gabriel Bortoleto found the barriers after an off at turn 18.
03:55The Brazilian driver was unhurt.
03:58Into Rivazza 1, then we're into Crash Corner now.
04:01And he has an oversteer on the way in,
04:03and, yeah, corrected off into the barrier.
04:05Not a massive impact there for Bortoleto.
04:08Hi, Crash.
04:09Okay, mate.
04:10Are you okay, mate?
04:11Yeah, I'm okay.
04:12I'm okay.
04:12I think it was just a different thing.
04:14So another McLaren 1-2, and the table looks like this.
04:17Piastri from Norris, Sainz, Russell, Hamilton, Gasly, Verstappen,
04:21Albon, Bortoleto, and Nico Holkenberg.
04:24P11 for Stroll.
04:25Then came Leclerc, Antonelli, Alonso, Lawson,
04:28Tsunoda, Colopinto, Behrman, Hajar, and Ocon.
04:32Thank you.
04:33Thank you.
