A couple shopping at their local home-improvement store heard noises from inside a pallet wrapped in plastic – before opening it and discovering a kitten trapped inside. Shelby Elko, 29, and husband Alex, 32, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, were browsing the garden section of the local store on April 26 when they heard a noise, which they both thought could be a bird. Having heard the noise again, the couple started looking for where the sound was coming from, tracing it to a plastic wrapped pallet of lava rock bags. Shelby tried her best to reach the noise, but after failing to get high enough, she called on Alex to jump up while she captured the moment on video. In the stunning footage, Alex can be seen ripping a hole in the plastic wrap, which then caused a kitten to fall out onto a sack below.

00:00This shopping trip turned into an unexpected rescue mission.
00:03Yeah.
00:06Oh my gosh, it's a kitten!
00:09This kitten, now called Oscar, was trapped inside a pallet at a home improvement store.
00:14Right there. Yeah.
00:16Luckily, kind shoppers Shelby and Alex heard his tiny meows and climbed up to help.
00:21Oh my gosh, it's a kitten!
00:24Oh, honey.
00:25Is there more?
00:26Oh, honey.
00:31With guidance from her kitten-fostering aunt, Shelby gave him round-the-clock care.
00:36It was just kind of this crazy, crazy scenario.
00:39We checked for other kittens.
00:40We did check for a mom.
00:43I have talked to people that are in animal rescue, and they said that everything that we did was fine.
00:50We had no idea that the kitten was just going to fall out.
00:53The fall was not ideal, but he is doing fabulous.
00:56Now, Oscar is at a local rescue, getting vital socialization with other kittens until he's big enough to hopefully reunite with Shelby and Alex permanently.
