00:00Eric and Lyle Menendez have spent 35 years behind bars for the murders of their parents,

00:09but the brothers could soon walk free. In an emotional Los Angeles court hearing,

00:13the two men took full responsibility for the 1989 killings in which they shot their father

00:18five times, including in the kneecaps, and shot their mother as she tried to crawl away.

00:22The judge reduced the men's original sentences of life without the possibility of parole to a

00:27term of 50 years to life. The case was thrust back into the spotlight in 2023 when new evidence

00:33came to light about their father's history of sexual abuse. The release of a Netflix series

00:37about the case added to a growing campaign to free the brothers. In their initial sentencing,

00:42prosecutors argued that the shotgun killings were a way for the brothers to get their hands on their

00:46parents' $14 million fortune. The brothers, who had sought to cover their tracks, ended up admitting

00:51they had acted in self-defense after years of emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of a

00:56tyrannical father. Lyle Menendez, now aged 57, addressed the court via video link, admitting

01:02he had murdered his parents. His brother, Eric, now 54, told the court he had been wrong to take

01:07the law into his own hands and said his actions were cruel and cowardly. Their cousin, Anna Maria

01:12Baralt, poured the hearing they were reformed and had earned their freedom. We believe that 35 years

01:16is enough, she said. They are universally forgiven by a family. They deserve a second chance at life.
