A new video released on social media reveals the use of the S-200V/M Vega surface-to-air missile system by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR). The launches are conducted using mobile 5P72 stationary launchers, firing 5V28 guided missiles originally designed for air defense but now also adapted for ground targets.
According to the military-focused channel Military Informant, some of the missiles still serve their original anti-aircraft role, while others have been converted into surface-to-surface weapons. How these missiles retain functionality after decades in storage or abandonment remains a technical mystery.
The S-200 system, developed during the Soviet era, was extensively used by the USSR and later by the Russian Armed Forces, albeit with a limited performance record. Ironically, it is now in Ukrainian hands that the system has begun inflicting significant damage — and against Russia itself.
