Glen McGrath 5 for 68 in 22 Overs 6 Mdns vs West Indies 2nd Innings 1st Test, Bridgetown, March 31 - April 02, 1995
Transcript
00:00Let's rewind the clock too in April 1995.
00:04The stage was set at Bridgetown for the first test between Australia and West Indies.
00:09On a pitch that offered just enough to keep the baller streaming, one man rose above all,
00:15that is Glenn McGrath.
00:16In the second innings, Glenn McGrath unleashed a classic spell of fast-balling, 22-6 made
00:22in 68 runs and 5 big wickets.
00:24His line was tight, his length immaculate, and his patience unbreakable.
00:30Each delivery was like a question West Indies' batter could not answer.
00:34With this brilliant performance, Glenn McGrath helped Australia bundle out the mighty West
00:38Indies for just 189 runs.
00:41That collapse opened the door wide for the Aussies.
00:44They did not just walk through it, they stomped in chasing a small target.
00:48Australia knocked off the runs without losing a single wicket, sealing a dominant 10-wicket
00:53victory.
00:54This match marked the rise of Glenn McGrath as a future legend, a baller who would go on
00:59to rule test cricket with relentless accuracy and silent aggression.
01:04Now let's see live the golden spell and enjoy the genius of one of the greatest fast ballers
01:09the game has ever seen.
01:16McGraw, good competitor, interesting bowler, still gaining in confidence, still convincing
01:33himself that he's good enough to play at this level consistently.
01:35very affable young man, very focused fast bowler, plays down the line.
01:51there's no wicket for eight.
01:52It's always serious Michael if an umpire loses the confidence of the competitors.
02:06and seeing one still not too convict.
02:22And so the West Indies young openers have failed again.
02:29Williams going, Lord Murray, Lord Healy, Old McGrath, lack of discipline at the top.
02:45and joy for the Australian.
02:48Lack of discipline in it, definitely.
02:51Definitely.
02:52That was not a ball to be playing that type of a shortcut.
02:55Ball bounced appreciably just outside the off stump.
02:58Short William goes, it's two for 25 the West Indies.
03:11And this is why Carl Hooper has to be coming to the crease quite early.
03:18That microphone in the ground really telling the story there, you could hear the distinct nick.
03:36Played and beaten.
03:38Beautifully bowled by McGrath.
03:41That was an excellent delivery from McGrath.
03:44That's what he should be concentrating on.
03:46Pitching the ball pretty much in line with the stumps and getting it to go across the body.
03:51Excellent delivery.
03:57And Lara's edge McGrath, caught behind, across the body.
04:01And Brian Lara has gone at the man that the Australians fear most.
04:06Has played across the line, fractionally.
04:09And McGrath, as Jeffrey Boycott said, that skidding action.
04:12Just a bit of extra across the bat of Lara.
04:15And Ian Healy did the rest.
04:17And this is the Lara dismissal.
04:20Yeah, good delivery.
04:21See, pitching on, maybe about leg and middle, going across him.
04:24Perfectly bowled, making him play.
04:27And he's in at that a bit.
04:28He's bowled pretty well this morning.
04:30Last night was 15 overs for 13.
04:34And, well, the runs per over didn't really count last night.
04:37They had to go in without losing a wicket.
04:39They achieved that.
04:40But unfortunately...
04:41Just short, I think.
04:50McGrath, Warner's been excellent today.
04:55Saying perhaps he grabbed a little but just couldn't reach it.
04:59Just in front of him.
05:00He's been in good form today.
05:02I think he would have needed to come forward for that catch before.
05:06It certainly was falling short of his hands.
05:09Well, he's tempting him as McGrath.
05:27Really intelligent bowling.
05:28He did that after, I don't know, over a go.
05:31The feet, the feet do not move, you see.
05:34There's just a little shuffle there of the feet.
05:36He's miles away from the ball.
05:39Get that foot to the pitch of the ball.
05:41It's right up there.
05:42He could have almost trodden on this ball.
05:45But look where the foot is.
05:46It's a foot and a half away from the pitch.
05:49Just a careless swipe at it.
05:52Doesn't really have to rock around that far when he's playing the hot hook shot.
05:57Just over leg stump.
05:58That's why McGrath has reacted like that.
05:59Jimmy Adams just falling across his stumps.
06:00And the bounce saving there, Michael.
06:01Yes, that wasn't very far from the leg stump.
06:02But all that we saw there, Jimmy Adams ended up well outside his off stump after playing the shot.
06:06Leg before.
06:07So McGrath gets another wicket.
06:11Weston leads a blast at 7.
06:12And Winston Benjamin's.
06:13Quite aggressive innings.
06:14Caught up in the middle.
06:15He's gone by.
06:16So McGrath gets another wicket.
06:17Weston leads a blast at 7.
06:18And Winston Benjamin's.
06:19of playing this one
06:26like before
06:30that's another wicket western made the block there seven and Winston Benjamin
06:36and that's just what I've been looking for and another very good delivery ball pitching and
06:55cutting back sharply in towards right-handed batsman that ball hitting before his back could
06:59come down and you can see they're hitting very much in line with the stumps it's Sempowa Sempowa
07:05Sempowa hundred and seventy
07:13so Kirtley Ambrose comes in
07:18his little confrontation in the first innings with McGraw mr. Benjamin out to this delivery
07:27definitely no doubt about that at all obviously hit plumb in front that left leg not coming a long
07:34way forward
07:34so
07:53on
07:57was digging out well
08:01it's gonna have sentry and test quickly for him in fact
08:03The house entry was made against England when the West Englands were in some difficulty in Trinidad some years ago.
08:12If we can do what Winston Benjamin has done, just to give the West Englands 20 or 30, that would be helpful.
08:29Well, one fast forward touting another down-truth mid-ricot.
08:33Certainly gives one great satisfaction, the other sheer frustration.
08:39Yes!
08:41Yes!
08:43Yes!
08:45Yes!
08:47Yes!
08:48Yes!
08:52Yes!
08:54Yes!
08:58and
09:02rock rock
09:28Magra did produce an excellent delivery to Brian Lara earlier on this morning, pitching
09:45in line with the stumps and going right across his body.
09:48Apparently, this captain now wants him to go around the wicket to Kurt Ambrose and concentrate
09:56on pitching just outside the off-stop.
09:58Let's see if he's still trying to carry it away or bring it back in to the left-hander.
10:03He's out, straight into the lap of the mid-arm fielder.
10:09West Enders have lost the 8th picket for 178.
10:13So, Ambrose's little innings finishes and Magra gets him once more.
10:19Well, we know Ambrose is batting at number 9.
10:24Not considered to be one of the front-line batsmen for the West Enders.
10:28But that was an irresponsible shot.
10:30No need for that at all.
10:32His job should have been to try and stay with Jimmy Adams.
10:35It's 8 for 176 West Enders.
10:39The batsman, Sporty Walsh, comes in with an almost hopeless position now.
10:47got거야.
10:59They just need to close this area.
11:01They just gotta kill him.
11:031 to 2.
11:04All this in as well.
11:06Remember, you guys can be out.
11:09So we're on out to the new backs when you watch
11:39It's going to be very difficult for the adjudicator for the man of the match award
11:53So many of the Australians are in there with chances
12:00This man must have won
12:02It's locked to that over the top
12:09And it's got enough carry on it that it will go all the way to the ropes
12:32Typical Courtney Walsh stroke
12:39Got up to that similar stroke in the first innings
12:42But it was off the leg spinner of Shane Warren
12:44The ball went right up in the air
12:45This time it went for four
12:52That's the end of it
12:54Huge swipe
12:56So Austin is in no mood here to extend the match any further
13:01For Kenny Benjamin to come
13:08Nine down
13:13I'm not too sure what the plan is for this West Indies lower order
13:17Again here we see a big wind-up
13:20Big heave-o
13:21Missed completely
13:23And it's come shattered
13:26It's 9 for 180 the West Indies
13:31The new batsman
13:38Kenny Benjamin
13:40The new and the last
13:43And the last
13:44I want to play the best
13:48Who is he at the last
13:53with that shot from kenny benjamin i think he probably took his cue from this shot from
14:12gortnawalsh stumps completely shattered
14:26so three to kenny benjamin
14:45but he's a tall man glenn mcgraw he uses his height to full advantage
14:59you've seen him pull with a bit of pace here and certainly he's got dunks it's been an impressive
15:03performance by him
15:06glenn mcgroth was not your typically tear away fast baller he did not rely on raw pace or big swing to
15:24trouble the batters instead he built his legacy on one priceless skill unshakable accuracy time after
15:31time he bowled that perfect line just outside of the of stem making bestman play and regret it his
15:37control was machine-like and his passion was endless he did not just bowl deliveries he set traps waited
15:44for mistakes and struck with ruthless efficiency glenn mcgroth turned simplicity into an art form and
15:51showed the cricketing world that you don't need to be fast to be deadly glenn mcgroth made his test
15:57debut for australia against new zealand in november 1993 and over the next 14 years he became a legend
16:04he played 124 test matches and took 563 wickets at a remarkable average of 21.64. his best bowling
16:13in an inning was a devastating spell of 8 for 24 and he claimed 29 5 wicket hauls and 3 10 wickets match
16:21his economy rate of 2.49 reflects just how difficult he was to score against and his strike rate of 51.9
16:30shows how often he took wickets though his batting was not much to write home about he scored just 641
16:38runs at an average of 7.36 his real job was with the ball and he did it better than almost anyone
16:46beyond test clan mcgroth also had a stellar first class career in 189 matches he picked up 8 35 wickets
16:54at an impressive average of 20.60 he recorded 41 5 wicket hauls and 6 10 wicket match hall with his
17:02best bowling once again 8 for 25 his economy rate in first class cricket was an outstanding 2.37 proving
17:10that accuracy and control were not just limited to the international stage whether he was playing
17:16for australia or for new southwest glenn mccrath always delivered when it came to facing the mighty
17:23west indies glenn mccrath never backed down he played 14 test matches against them and took 65 wickets an
17:30incredible average of 19.90 he registered four five wicket hauls and his best bowling figure in an innings
17:38against them were five for 44. during the mid-90s the west indies still had big names like ryan lara
17:45karl hooper and shivner and chander paul but mcgroth consistent out thought and out bowled them
17:50glenn mcgroth will always be remembered as one of the finest ballers to ever play the game he did not
17:57rely on sledging or showmanship his ball did the talking alongside shane won he formed a lethal
18:04partnership that dominated test cricket for over a decade glenn mcgroth proved that bowling smart
18:10and staying disciplined could outshine even the fastest ballers his legacy lives on just not in
