00:00Majid Khan was a graceful and stylish cricketer who played with the charm of old English amateurs.
00:06He sometimes looked relaxed, as if he was not, putting in much effort.
00:11Majid Khan played a stylish and calm inning, scoring 74 runs from 155 balls in 188 minutes.
00:19He hit seven elegant fours during his knock.
00:21This happened in the first innings of the third Test match against Australia at Melbourne
00:26in December 1981.
00:28This strong batting helped Pakistan reach a big total of 500 for eight.
00:32After that, Pakistani ballers performed really well and put pressure on the Australian past
00:37man.
00:38As a result, Pakistan won the match by an innings and 82 runs.
00:42This was Pakistan's second win against Australia in Australia.
00:46Now let's watch Majid Khan's brilliant innings.
00:49Well bowled and a little inside edge and that could so easily have bobbed up.
00:56That's very, very well bowled by Bruce Yardley.
00:58That's the end of his over and the score one for 40.
01:05Realized there's a hundred for him here possibly.
01:07Good shot.
01:08That's the field by Jeff Thompson.
01:16That's the field by Jeff Thompson.
01:17That's a fraction of a second undecided whether to bowl it in or throw it in but the throw
01:33was as close to perfect as you could have when he had to come off balance.
01:37Yardley, too much it can.
01:38That's a pretty good ball and also a good shot and a great piece of fielding.
01:47That's a nice curving off spinner.
01:50And Yardley once again curving that ball in the air as he did at Brisbane and he's using
02:00this breeze well.
02:03So, splitting the field on the offside, Terry Alderman the fielder.
02:14That's a good shot.
02:21Nice timing.
02:22While I'm doing the chasing.
02:24There's a chance of four here if they can run.
02:27There's going to be a relay throw.
02:30And there it is.
02:35Overthrows go.
02:39They're up to six now.
02:42Can they do seven?
02:43He's just going to come back.
02:44So much for me saying he's not running as fast as he used to.
02:47But we'll just have a close-up now of his heavy breathing.
02:50And there it is.
02:55Right, Richie.
02:56He's almost down and out but he's managed seven.
03:01And that should please him a little.
03:04Takes him into double figures.
03:06Yardley to Marjit Khan.
03:07And shot for four.
03:08Slightly over pitch.
03:09Although he hit it into the ground, he hit it very, very fast away past the man at extra
03:20cover.
03:21Well, that was beautiful timing.
03:24And Marjit really put everything he had into that shot.
03:28He didn't even bother to run as that ball streaked across the four.
03:33Beautiful shot by him.
03:34He's well poised there to hit it.
03:37Looks in good form at the moment.
03:49And that's a better shot.
03:50Beautiful strike, that one.
03:52Good placing that away to the left of Terry Alderman.
04:02One for 65.
04:05Lily Bowles now to Marjit Khan.
04:08That's the first one he's got to go.
04:13You can see the fingers there roll right over the top of the ball.
04:22There it is.
04:23I think that particular delivery beating him outside the off stump will put some doubts in
04:30his mind and the pressure back on him again because Lily has got through him.
04:35And him again with another leg cutter.
04:45So, that's really good bowling.
04:50That was a beautiful delivery from Dennis Lily.
04:54The leg cutter.
04:56And Marjit now getting a very difficult time.
05:02Suddenly that seems to have lost a little of his confidence.
05:15He's got that away.
05:17It was an extraordinary stroke for four.
05:19Very ambitious and in the end very successful.
05:23That's one for 78.
05:27And now it's going to be Alan Borda.
05:29Alan left arm around the wicket.
05:31And they're going to be two attacking fieldsmen out there.
05:34Chapels at slip.
05:35And we've got a forward short leg as well.
05:38Borda.
05:39Borda.
05:40Borda.
05:41Borda.
05:42Borda.
05:43Borda.
05:44Borda.
05:45Borda.
05:46Borda.
05:47Borda.
05:48Borda.
05:49Borda.
05:50Borda.
05:51Borda.
05:52Borda.
05:53Malham's got it some sloppy cricket from Bruce Yardley out there
06:02magic can't to pick up three runs on water just being limbering up delivery
06:08first off magic was able to get back and really hit it and curving away from
06:12Bruce Yardley board has had a little bit of a problem to match it can
06:19Alderman wouldn't have bowled to this sort of field on too many occasions in
06:24his test career one pitched up and well played by magic that was beautifully
06:29timed he needs straight down the ground wood trying to cut it off but not
06:34succeeding Thompson eventually coming around from mid-off and magic goes for
06:37three
06:40nice on drive from magic can't Terry Alderman well pitched up just easing into the
06:47shot very little effort and Graham would coming across trying to cut it off not
06:51able to do so and well run by magic can he saw if there was three in it Jeff
06:57Thompson's arm been a little bit questionable over the years took one on
07:00his throw
07:02magic looking dangerous probably for the first time in this series and on top of
07:06the ball alderman to magic can good shot delightful cut that no third man so the
07:18Australian captain needing to start thinking now about field placings accurate
07:24bowling and the fact that he's lost the toss might be facing a big total time he gets in
07:31there things might not be quite as easy as they are now
07:36border left time and they are too much it can
07:47really just returning the ball yes and we must always remember when we see border
07:52bowling on such a look at this that he really doesn't have any margin for error does he just
07:57drop the ball minimally short Alderman to Majid Khan
08:04and that's through
08:08Alderman just showing a little bit of exasperation as that was almost a chance for
08:15gully
08:20and it can't go down to chance it was out of his reach but close enough on this
08:34pitch to cause the ball is a moment of frustration
08:38yes it was very wide of guarding in fact magic himself committed an error in chasing the
08:43ball that was when it started fairly wide at the off stump
08:50well the modern field setting is not to have a third man
08:56and you must pay the penalty for anything that's in any way loose and Majid is a very good cutter of the ball
09:02and that's proof positive of that fact
09:06he was well on top of that delivery from Terry Alderman who has just strayed a little bit too much outside the off stump
09:13in the last couple of deliveries
09:16he's just giving Majid too much room out there and experienced Pakistan Vatman was very quick to seize upon those opportunities
09:23Alderman was down but it was only a technical knockout that he was quickly on his feet
09:44he just slipped
09:45in fact he overbalanced didn't his weight was going so far forward
09:50it went way ahead of him and he did a forward roll
09:54and he's got him away again
10:16he won't go for four this time
10:19but if Majid wants to come back they can take three
10:24and the border doing the fielding
10:26now in that over Alderman much too short all the time
10:31one for one for one
10:42well fielded
10:44not much in it
10:45very well done by border
10:47absolutely reflex stuff this
10:52border
10:54whipping that ball in as
10:56Majid was stumbling forward
10:58and he just had enough sense to look towards border
11:01the last moment and managed to slip his bat
11:04back into the crease
11:06the ball way outside the off stump
11:08angles it across the right hander
11:10and there's
11:17Majid's half century
11:19and a good innings it is too
11:21he's played it very well
11:23some excellent cutting
11:25some good driving
11:27one for 148 with Majid 50
11:31and Madasa now 75
11:33and that must be a great thrill for Majid to make 50 on this ground
11:37well the next step is obviously
11:39to get a hundred
11:40but again as I said before
11:44to get another 25 on the board 75
11:47and then go on from there
11:49that's the aim
11:51yeah
11:52and that 50 came in only 98 balls
11:56Alderman to Majid Khan
11:58two more to Majid
12:10two more to Majid
12:12150 comes up for Pakistan
12:14for the loss of one wicket
12:15Yardley to Majid Khan
12:19and mid on all in a straight line
12:25that'll be runs to Majid
12:26in fact I think it will be four runs
12:27it is four runs
12:28that ball straying outside the leg stump
12:30and swept away
12:31by Majid
12:32to bring in yet another boundary
12:34the end of the over
12:36one for 158
12:37that's a good shot too
12:41and er
12:42and effort there by a board
12:45who dives away
12:46but doesn't get anywhere near the ball
12:48I'm just a little bit short
12:49and Majid just leaning back
12:52and hitting it through the field
12:57Yardley to Majid Khan
12:59two for one hundred and
13:07you may have thought that was an appeal
13:09but er
13:10it was just an involuntary shout
13:12in the end it was a shout of relief I think
13:14that he wasn't done a devastating injury
13:17it's worth a throw
13:25Yardley to Majid Khan
13:28well good shot
13:32he's beaten two men there
13:34that was a fine shot
13:36he's hit it past border
13:37and then past Alderman
13:39and I reckon there wouldn't have been a yard
13:45between the two of them on the line
13:47very fine placement by Majid
13:50right between the two fielders
13:53one deep and one close to the bat
13:55and very firmly hit of the front foot
13:58he moved his weight well there as he went into that shot
14:06and that was well bowled
14:09certainly been the best of the bowlers today
14:11Bruce Yardley
14:14two hundred comes up now for Pakistan
14:18great start for them
14:19well it's well into the final session
14:22so it's more than a start
14:23but two for two oh one
14:25should be delighted in the dressing room
14:28this is the best they've done so far
14:30and on this wicket having won the toss
14:34they must be pleased with themselves
14:36full marks to Yardley
14:43anyone who can get a ball to do that
14:45on this pitch and confuse the batsman
14:47when he's made 73
14:49deserves the congratulations he's getting now
14:51from Chappell and Rodney Marsh
14:53nice bowling
14:57Majid Khan
14:58quartered short leg off Yardley
15:00the ball
15:04lifted just a little turned
15:05and a simple catch
15:06and Majid has departed
15:08but all credit to Yardley
15:11he's certainly bowled very well today
15:12he's been the best of the Australian Bowlers
15:15in the fine innings
15:16from Majid
15:17as he goes back
15:18he's come back into the runs
15:22and I'm sure this innings will do him well to go
15:26Majid Khan studied at Cambridge University
15:28and played test cricket in the UK
15:29played test cricket like his father, Jahangir Khan. However, he did not achieve his father's
15:35strange record of hitting a flying sparrow at Lord's Cricket Ground. Majid Khan began his
15:40cricket career as a fastballer. But due to the back injury and questions about his bouncers,
15:45he stopped fastballing and sometimes bowled offspin instead. He became more famous for his
15:51batting, which helped him rise in the batting order. Eventually, he became a successful opening
15:56batsman, often partnership with Sadiq Muhammad. Majid Khan was known for his elegant drives and
16:02powerful hooks. He could score runs quickly and with ease. Sadly, his cricket career ended when his
16:08cousin Imran Khan had to drop him from the team, which hurt their relationship. Later, Majid Khan
16:13worked as a strict cricket administrator before leaving that role. He made headlines by talking
16:19about possible match-fixing in the 1999 World Cup. In terms of test stats, Majid Khan represented
16:26Pakistan in 63 test matches between 1964 and 1983. Over his test career, he amassed 3,931 runs at an
16:36average of 38.92. His batting achievements include 8 centuries and 19 half centuries with a high score
16:43of 167. As a baller, he delivered 3,584 balls, taking 27 wickets at an average of 53.92. His best
16:53bowling figures in an innings were 4 wickets for 45 runs. In the field, he took 70 catches.
16:59As far as first-class career stats, Majid Khan had an extensive career playing in 410 matches. He
17:06scored a total of 27,444 runs with an impressive batting average of 43.01. His first-class record
17:15includes 73 centuries and 128 half centuries, with a top score of 241. With the ball, he bowled
17:2318,314 deliveries, claiming 223 wickets at an average of 32.14. His best bowling figures in
17:31any innings were 6 wickets for 67 runs, and he achieved four 5 wicket hauls. Additionally,
17:37he took 410 catches in the field. So, Majid Khan's career is notable for his
17:42elegant batting style and significant contribution to Pakistan Cricket, both as a prolific bestman and
17:48a capable all-rounder. If you liked this video, please comment, share and subscribe.
