00:00It's qualifying time now for the main game, the V8 Supercars.
00:05The first of two qualifying sessions today.
00:08That's the Sunday schedule, back-to-back ahead of races 26 and 27 this afternoon.
00:14The weather will play a big part in this one because conditions continue to change here at Winton.
00:18It's getting quite cool.
00:20Let's check in with our Pitlane reporters.
00:22Of course, as always, Mark Larcombe in Pitlane and so too.
00:24Mark Barretta. G'day, Bretts.
00:25Hey, Matty. Great to see these two guys side-by-side lining up this morning.
00:28Jason Bright and Mark Winterbottom.
00:29And what a tremendous duel they had yesterday for third spot on the podium.
00:33Frosty finished in fourth spot, but today looks like being his day.
00:37Of course, the last couple of rounds, he has pulled more points out of the rounds than any other driver in the championship.
00:43At the start of this year, he finished the opening round in 21st on the championship.
00:46He currently sits in fourth spot.
00:48He is the man to watch today.
00:50Keep an eye on Mark Winterbottom.
00:52For those of you that watch the telecast, you'll often hear me talking about when a driver's driving a car,
00:57particularly in these qualifying sessions, they are on the limit of adhesion on every corner,
01:02every brake application and every throttle application.
01:05And when I say that, I actually mean it because there is such little time to be made up to gain an advantage on your competitor.
01:12Yesterday around Winton here, right, three kilometres of track in qualifying, there's the finish line.
01:18You can see the two little black lines on the ground.
01:20That's the electronic timing line.
01:21So it's exact.
01:23Now, remember, across four manufacturers, 11 different teams that all build their cars differently,
01:2828 drivers went around here, and the whole field was 0.82 of a second.
01:37That's, well, that's 0.63.
01:400.82 of a second, the whole lot of them, and the top ten were 0.16 of a second apart.
01:48So that goes to show every throttle application, every brake application,
01:53every tiny bit of cornering technique matters.
01:55It was an incredible session yesterday, wasn't it, Larko?
01:59And those numbers certainly back it up.
02:01And then we had the drama on the track as well.
02:03Michael Caruso was so close to getting his first pole position,
02:06and he went off at the final turn.
02:09Jamie Winkuff ends up getting his 11th career pole position,
02:13and then, of course, would have a big failure in the middle of the race.
02:17Extraordinary.
02:17So let's check out our location.
02:19We're up to event number nine,
02:21ahead of the Pertec Enduro Cup, Sandown Bathurst and Gold Coast, still ahead.
02:25And the theatre for all the action today.
02:27Winton Motor Raceway, three kilometres, 12 corners, slowest average speed,
02:31just over 130 kilometres an hour of any of the circuits on the Tour.
02:35And we've got a top speed on the front straight here,
02:37the pit straight of around about 225 kilometres an hour.
02:41Quite a complicated little racetrack.
02:43A lot of second gear stuff, quite hard on the rear tyres.
02:45Qualifying's coming up, so we'll look at these sectors.
02:48That first sector ends on the braking approach into the sweeper at Turn 5,
02:52and the second sector ends halfway down the old back straight between Turns 9 and 10.
02:57The remarkable thing for me in qualifying yesterday is just how tight it was,
03:01which Mark Lacham did a terrific job of explaining how tiny those fractions are.
03:06But given those tiny fractions, boys, one of the things that I think is really extraordinary
03:10is that somehow, against all the odds, when you flip the coin,
03:14Wincup has been able, more often than not, to be the guy that prevails.
03:18And the margin, like yesterday we talked about it, was only 0.0165.
03:23That's a smidgen over a hundredth of a second,
03:26but translated to roughly a metre on the racetrack.
03:28It's just incredible.
03:29It certainly is, Neil, and that gap, we've seen him do it.
03:33It wasn't just about the gap, it was actually getting himself to pole position,
03:37meaning the ultimate effort, the personal exertion, the way he drove the car,
03:42the accuracy around this very difficult layout.
03:46To put that lap together at that time is the thing that we've seen him do,
03:50and that's been the difference between Jamie and his team-mate Craig
03:53in the way that he puts himself at the pointy end of the field.
03:56I think the other thing that's important to discuss
04:00when you consider the motor racing function
04:03and how it all comes together, it's no magic bullet.
04:05There's no one thing.
04:06It's not just Jamie, it's not just one thing in the car.
04:09The result you get from motor racing is the sum of many parts.
04:13There's hundreds, if not thousands of them,
04:15and you've got to get every one of those just right
04:17in order to get the sequence together.
04:20But it is still remarkable that he's been able to prevail.
04:25This is turn 10.
04:27That's the spot where Russell Ingle had a dive yesterday
04:29in a very vigorous battle with Garth Pander,
04:32and also James Moffat had a mistake late in the race
04:35that made everybody hold their breath.
04:37It's turn 11.
04:38There's a few bumps on the approach to that corner.
04:40A bit of oversteer on the exit there for Winkup
04:42with the back of the car sliding around.
04:44It's having a fair hop there at the moment.
04:46I wonder whether they've made some little changes to that car.
04:49It just looks a little unsettled in the rear.
04:50And the way that that hop is created,
04:53a lot of times Cropper comes from the way the stiffness
04:56of the car is created.
04:57So coil spring, the shock absorber, the sway bar,
05:00and the car often gets that from sway bar settings.
05:03That makes it hop.
05:04It's uncontrolled.
05:05Look at the tyre.
05:06Look at the deflection of the new 18-inch Dunlop control tyre.
05:10The soft compound tyre tries to pull basically the surface,
05:15the tread of the tyre, away from the rim.
05:18Very low tyre pressure is being used by the teams at the moment,
05:22and that's one of the reasons that you see that deflection.
05:24It is seeking performance,
05:26and they're finding that the lower pressures are giving them a yield.
05:30We're seeing huge distortion,
05:31sometimes even risk of damaging the tyre.
05:34Fastest lap so far, Lee Holdsworth, 1 minute 23.1.
05:37This is Dean Fiore.
05:38We had a very wet Friday,
05:41and if you're only just joining us today in our telecast,
05:44you may not have seen the wild image of this guy
05:46flying off in the wet session.
05:48He's buried knee-deep in mud in that Dodo car insurance vehicle.
05:53It was a pretty wild moment.
05:55It dried up Friday afternoon, thankfully,
05:57and yesterday we had pretty good weather.
05:59Hey, on the radio, Jamie Winkup,
06:01we saw had a tail shaft failure yesterday in the race.
06:05Championship changing moment.
06:06He's complaining about a massive tail shaft vibration right now.
06:10So he may not.
06:11They're hoping, the team is saying back to him,
06:14that we're hoping to get through this session.
06:16So significant issue there for Winkup.
06:20They said his performance in qualifying yesterday was extraordinary,
06:23but if you've got that level of tail shaft vibration,
06:25it will upset his ability to do that job.
06:29Yesterday, if you were watching the coverage,
06:32we speculated that we thought it may have been a gearbox fail.
06:34It wasn't, just to put a full stop on that point.
06:37It was actually a tail shaft problem.
06:39I quizzed Roland Dane about it this morning.
06:41They're going to have to do a deeper analysis
06:42when they get back to Brisbane.
06:45They don't really know what the problem was.
06:46Winterbottom now fast man.
06:47First hit of the 22s, joined immediately by his teammate.
06:50So the Pepsi Max forwards, one and two,
06:53Winterbottom and Davison.
06:54Remember, Winterbottom's come here
06:55with four pole positions previously.
06:58How's the margin, Cromwell?
07:00Have a look at this.
07:00Garth Kander, 22.93.
07:03Winterbottom, 22.94.
07:05Davison, 22.95.
07:08Two thousands.
07:10Courtney now to the top on a 22.6
07:12and Blanchard's fifth in the Wilson security forward.
07:15It's happy hour because Scott McLaughlin's just done a 122.5.
07:20He's got a tenth in hand over James Courtney.
07:23Yesterday's winning time in terms of pole was 122.21.
07:28So they're still three tenths of a second off that
07:30as Rick and Todd Kelly buy into the top five.
07:33It's like a spinning wheel and you pick a number at the moment
07:35because it just keeps on changing at the top.
07:38It's McLaughlin, Courtney, Todd Kelly, Rick Kelly,
07:41Tander, Winterbottom, Will Davison, Blanchard,
07:43Mostert and Slade.
07:45That's a mixed up ten.
07:46You mentioned Mark Winterbottom's record here
07:49in qualifying four pole positions.
07:52It was a pretty run in the middle day yesterday
07:54for car number five.
07:55He qualified fourth.
07:56He ended up fifth.
07:58He just didn't have the firepower to make a move
08:01on those in front of him throughout the course
08:03of the 60-60 race.
08:05Another good lap here from Frosty.
08:07The quickest lap, a 122.4.
08:11Good job.
08:12It's a very, very good lap,
08:13especially on the second lap for those tyres.
08:15So if he gets the phasing of the tyres right,
08:18which is the way that you get the front grip
08:20to come in at the right time,
08:22if he gets the phasing right, he'll go faster than that.
08:24He'll do a 22.2 or 3 if he makes the front tyre work earlier.
08:28This is Courtney's response.
08:32And he goes to P1.
08:33One minute 22.2 for James Courtney.
08:37Here's Scott McLaughlin.
08:38Position three.
08:40Headlights off, headlights off.
08:42Hit the red button.
08:43Need to keep up it, mate.
08:44Need to keep up.
08:45So that was a tough day at the office for him yesterday
08:47in qualifying.
08:48He qualified 23rd.
08:49We spoke to him prior to the race.
08:51It just shows the highs and lows of this caper
08:54because he was super strong at Queensland Raceway.
08:56So we take a look at the Jack Daniels-Nissan of Todd Kelly.
09:01The 122.28 that belongs to James Court
09:05is quicker than he qualified yesterday.
09:08So the pace is here today.
09:10The first of two back-to-back qualifying sessions
09:13at the Winton 360.
09:23Welcome back.
09:23No change to the order throughout the break.
09:26Most of the cars have been in pit lane
09:28and now with three minutes left on the clock,
09:30it's time for them to make their last attack
09:32on the fight for pole position.
09:34This is for race 26.
09:36And this is Gardana getting all loose and cut up.
09:38By the way, David Wall just jumped into the top ten
09:41for Wilson Security Racing.
09:42Wall into seven.
09:44Who's celebrating with his wife, Amy.
09:46She's pregnant with twins at the moment.
09:48So congratulations.
09:50That was a wild moment for Tander under brakes up there.
09:53He had a wild run yesterday with Russell Ingle.
09:55I had a quick word to Russell about it earlier in the day.
09:57So that was a fairly spirited run.
09:59Lucky it was internal.
10:00I said, yes, I was a little more reserved
10:02than I might otherwise have been.
10:04Fabian Coulthard to second.
10:07So James Courtney leads.
10:0822.28 is the time to beat.
10:11So Wing Cup's been sent back out with that vibrating tail shaft.
10:15Obviously nothing they can do within this session about it.
10:17And I reckon that'd be quite discerning
10:18because remembering the tail shaft on these cars now
10:21rotates at the same speed as the engine.
10:23So it'd be quite a decent vibration.
10:25The other little observation,
10:26James Moffat was about the second last car
10:29to depart the pit lane,
10:30about a lap behind everyone else.
10:32And I just hope at the end of this session
10:34he doesn't get caught up in everyone slowing down
10:36while he's on his quick one.
10:38So we've just got a little less than two minutes remaining now.
10:41So everyone's trying to get into position
10:42to get some track space,
10:44elbow room,
10:45and their tyres phased in
10:46at the right temperature and pressure
10:47at just the right moment.
10:49This is Dalberto,
10:51car number three.
10:51He's down the order at the moment
10:53in 28th position.
10:54That's a really good point, Larko,
10:56because the traffic is always something
10:58very difficult to manage around here.
10:59And if you've got to go offline,
11:01it will cost you time.
11:03So Moffat needs to be careful.
11:05Moffat and Caruso were very strong yesterday.
11:07And Dalberto goes to the top of the 22-1-8.
11:09Great job.
11:10Which is the fastest time we've seen all weekend.
11:14Faster than yesterday's qualifying time
11:16set by Jamie Winkup.
11:17That is a ripping job by Dalberto.
11:20Right now to the top on a 122-09.
11:23Nice job, Jason Bright.
11:25Team VOC.
11:26So it's Holden Bright,
11:27Holden Dalberto,
11:28Holden Courtney,
11:30Holden Lockwood,
11:31Coulthard,
11:32and then the first forward is Winterbottom.
11:34It's a very different complexion
11:35compared to yesterday.
11:40Only two forwards in the top ten,
11:42Winterbottom and Alex Davison.
11:44Courtney just responded with a better lap then
11:46at 22-2.
11:47He's still in position three.
11:49They must have given up on Jamie Winkup's car.
11:51He has entered pit lane
11:52and he's currently in 13th.
11:55So it's going to be a mid-pack start
11:56for the championship leader
11:58as Winterbottom slides up to third.
12:00Will Davison goes into fifth.
12:04And Courtney's on a better lap.
12:06So he's split to the first sector.
12:08He's better than anyone we've seen thus far.
12:10Chas Mostert into the ten,
12:11into seventh.
12:14Bright's so close to a 21.
12:16Can Courtney do it?
12:18Caruso just moved up to 12.
12:20Moffat had the big run yesterday.
12:23He's down in 22nd.
12:27Winterbottom's responding as well.
12:29Here's David Reynolds.
12:30We watched him warm some tyres up.
12:32He's got Jason Bright behind him.
12:34Davison's on a fast sector split as well.
12:36That's Will Davison.
12:40Flag is now out.
12:41Clock's gone zero.
12:43Bright.
12:44Delberto's come to the pit lane.
12:46David Reynolds up to fifth on that lap.
12:49So here's Courtney.
12:50So it was a green box for the first sector,
12:52a personal best in the second.
12:54All the signs are there
12:55that this will be super close
12:56to Jason Bright's time.
12:57It's going to have to be a ripper final sector
13:00for James Courtney.
13:01He'll stay in fourth.
13:02And this is Shane Van Gisbergen.
13:10Completion of his lap for VIP Pet Foods.
13:12He goes into sixth.
13:14Who's still on a run?
13:15Well, Mark Winterbottom at the depth.
13:18Four pole positions.
13:19The most of anyone at this circuit.
13:21He can't add to it today.
13:23Jason Bright.
13:25Should be our pole sitter.
13:26Chas Mostert inside the top ten.
13:33Good effort from the Wilson Security Ford.
13:36And they celebrate at Bradley Jones Racing
13:39as Jason Bright gets the fourth pole of 2013.
13:45And it's the sixth time that Brad Jones Racing
13:47have had a pole as a team this year,
13:49continuing the good averages
13:50that both he and Fabian have generated.
13:52And a career best qualifying effort,
13:54a great effort from Team Hyflex
13:56and Tony D'Alberto starting on the front row
13:58for the first time in his V8 supercar career.
14:01Our championship leader, Jamie Wincup in 18th.
14:05His teammate just ahead of him,
14:07Michael Caruso, who qualified on the front row yesterday,
14:10also mid-pack.
14:11And James Moffat, the winner of yesterday's race
14:14for the Norton Hornets, qualifies in 25th.
14:17Congratulations to you, Tony.
14:19You'll be on the front row for the first race this afternoon.
14:22But no time to think about it
14:23because another qualifying session is coming up.
14:35So Jason Bright collects $1,500
14:38courtesy of Armourall
14:40for the fourth pole of the season for Jason,
14:44the 14th of his career.
14:45And the first one at this track,
14:47his home test track,
14:48since back in 2006,
14:50when he was driving for Ford Performance Racing.
14:54No time to mess around
14:55because they have to go back out there
14:56and that will not be good news for this man.
14:59Car number one, Jamie Wincup.
15:01More tail shaft dramas.
15:03That's what went on him yesterday
15:04and cost him any points in the race,
15:07his first DNF.
15:08And now they're working furiously
15:09to get this sort of barrettes.
15:11Hey, buddy, you mentioned no time to waste.
15:12And Jason Bright has just headed back out.
15:14I'm with Brad Jones.
15:15Brad, just the relationship between you
15:17and Bridie and the team,
15:18it all just works here at Winton, doesn't it?
15:20Well, it seems to be at the moment,
15:21I've got to say.
15:22Usually, I mean,
15:24qualifying sometimes can be one of those things,
15:26but it does set your race.
15:27And to be on the front row
15:29and for him to be on the front row,
15:31you know, this was a big win for us
15:33a couple of years ago.
15:34You know, we were on the podium yesterday,
15:35you know, although you saw how pumped the team are.
15:38So, you know, it's really great.
15:39It's, you know,
15:40but mind you, it's so close.
15:41Fabian's seventh, you know,
15:43and it wasn't much in it.
15:44So, great job by the guys at Team BOC and Bridie.
15:48And hopefully we can go on from there.
15:50It's a long way to go.
15:52We see you get great support from the crowd here,
15:54which is fantastic, Brad.
15:55All the best.
15:55Yeah, hopefully they'll all go and buy a jumper,
15:57a piece of merchandise, maybe a cap.
15:59Let's hope so.
16:00See you later.
16:01Hey, plenty of proud dads around this weekend.
16:03Alan Moffat can be one of them.
16:05And another one will be Tony Dalberto's father.
16:08You must be really, Al, sorry,
16:11you must be really pleased and proud
16:13that for a small team to whack that car
16:15on the front row of the grid is pretty impressive.
16:17Oh, it was.
16:18And credit goes to the whole team.
16:21They've been working really hard in the last couple of rounds.
16:24And obviously it's falling together.
16:28And the results are there for us.
16:30Can I say, it's really, really nice to see you.
16:32Well done, mate.
16:32Keep up the good work.
16:34It's a great moment for Team Hyflex.
16:36And Tony, especially, as Al celebrates success for his son.
16:39It was a different story for these guys, though,
16:41in that last qualifying session.
16:42After such a brilliant run yesterday,
16:46James Moffat ends up qualifying 25th
16:48and Michael Caruso 14th.
16:51Straight away, McLaughlin's jumped out
16:52and done a 22-2-5,
16:54which is right up at peak speed.
16:57It's a very good time straight out the gate.
16:59So he's settled in quickly
17:01and done at least a very good settling banker.
17:04And that gets him started in the whole process.
17:07Gee, the Red Bull Racing Australia cars
17:08were buried in that previous qualifying session.
17:11We had a glimpse there of Lowndes.
17:12And we know about the troubles for Wincup.
17:14Yeah, that is a very smart time there by the Glockman.
17:1922-2-5 to commence this qualifying session.
17:24Fastest time from the previous session, remember,
17:26it was a 22-09.
17:28So we'll be searching to get into the late 21s.
17:31Jason Bright said in the interview
17:33that he thought there might be a little bit more
17:35in that car of his.
17:37James Corton, he's done a good job also.
17:3922-3-4.
17:40Tim Blanchard has obviously found a sweet spot
17:44with that car
17:44because he's jumped up into position three.
17:46Again, we saw him up in the top ten earlier in that session.
17:49He did drift in the previous race down the order slightly,
17:52but he's obviously going a little bit better
17:54in that car at the moment.
17:55Jim Mark Winterbottom's got himself into a space.
17:57He's just sitting here in the car.
17:58They haven't been out on the track yet so far in this session.
18:00They are set.
18:01They're happy with the car.
18:02They just want to wait a couple more minutes,
18:03get some track space, and get stuck into it.
18:07Blanchard, I was making reference to him.
18:09He ended up 21st in the previous qualifying session.
18:12He's gone three-tenths faster in this session.
18:15That's a big gain as a percentage yield.
18:18So here we are looking at Mark Winterbottom,
18:21Pepsi Max Ford Falcon,
18:23and car number 17.
18:24Here's Tim Blanchard up at the top of the circuit at turn seven.
18:29Wilson Security signing on to be the backers of the Sandown 500.
18:32That's our next event,
18:33the beginning of the Pertec Enduro Cup.
18:36Three big Enduros coming your way
18:37at Sandown, Bathurst, and the Gold Coast,
18:39and we'll have the same drivers and co-driver combinations
18:42throughout those three races.
18:45And Mark and I spoke about this yesterday,
18:48the opportunity for a big points yield,
18:50or conversely, a massive disaster.
18:53And trying to manage that is a real...
18:55It's kind of surfing the razor blade,
18:56dealing with all that.
18:57And love the endurance races
18:59and all that it brings with them.
19:00So to put that into context...
19:03Good job, mate.
19:04Good job.
19:04For the Sandown event,
19:05300 points on a Sunday.
19:07So that's what it is, isn't it?
19:08So it's basically double the points
19:10for a yield that can be either hero or zero stuff, isn't it?
19:14One of the things that I think is really amazing
19:15about those events,
19:16and it always wakes you up as a driver,
19:18you're getting to the rhythm.
19:19Like we've got yesterday,
19:2160-60 Super Sprint Racing,
19:23and we've got 100k races today.
19:25When you do something like Sandown
19:26or Bathurst,
19:27we've got a sudden wake-up.
19:28Wow, I'm in the car for a long time,
19:30and how many laps to go?
19:32It's a very interesting process.
19:34So it is McLaughlin and Courtney.
19:35They're both in the lane at the moment.
19:37Right, we had a glimpse of there.
19:38He's active on the track in position three,
19:40displacing Blanchard down to four,
19:42who's in the lane.
19:43David Wall in position five,
19:45active on the track.
19:47Here's David, position 11 at the moment for Fottlow,
19:50and that moves him to third,
19:51that lap that you just saw completed there.
19:53Here's Van Giesbergen.
19:55Position nine at the moment,
19:56VIP Petfoods.
19:57He's on a 22-6,
19:59should move up,
20:00and does to position six on a 22-5.
20:03Give us a good read on that car on the lane.
20:06Thanks for his engineer.
20:09Typically at this moment,
20:10pretty much everybody is going to head towards pit lane
20:13and get ready for a final attack
20:15on the leaderboard,
20:16which is headed by Scott McLaughlin.
20:20Welcome back here at Qualifying for Race 27,
20:27the second race later this afternoon.
20:30These dramas continue for Jamie Wincup.
20:33Tail shaft is vibrating madly in this car,
20:36in the brake.
20:37I was listening in to a conversation
20:39between Roland Dane and Mark Dutton.
20:40There they are.
20:42And Roland asked Mark Dutton how the car was.
20:44He said,
20:44don't know,
20:45the vibration is so bad,
20:46can't get a read on it.
20:47Larko?
20:48Yeah,
20:48and that vibration,
20:49Matt,
20:49it's not the tail shaft itself.
20:51I'm talking to one of the mechanics
20:52that centres around the mount.
20:54There's a mount there that's rubberised
20:55to obviously hold that tail shaft in place
20:57relative to the body.
20:58So that's still going to be a drum.
20:59The biggest drama for Jamie
21:00just hasn't had running time.
21:02And we can see how sensitive this track.
21:04On the other side of the garage,
21:05Craig Land still,
21:06I can't see her time,
21:07but I think he's still in 20th spot,
21:08is he?
21:09Yes,
21:09he is.
21:10And they've just put a completely different set
21:12of shock absorbers
21:13and looked to me to be different spring rates
21:14in the rear of the car,
21:16which I've got to say,
21:17in a short qualifying session,
21:18is a big call from this team.
21:19They don't usually do that
21:20in these 15-minute segments.
21:22They need to do something
21:23because he was nowhere
21:24in that previous one,
21:25Larko,
21:25and as you correctly pointed out,
21:2620th at the moment.
21:27So,
21:28you've got a lot to find,
21:29Matt.
21:30Well,
21:30if you think about it
21:31in championship terms
21:32for this afternoon's races,
21:34we know that in race 26,
21:36Craig Lowndes will start from 17th
21:38and Winkup from 18th.
21:40Mark Winterbottom will start
21:41on the second row of the grid.
21:42And the way that it's travelling now,
21:45Winterbottom will more than likely end up there.
21:47He's yet to fire a shot
21:48in this qualifying session.
21:50He's so good at qualifying around here.
21:52So,
21:52this has been a big free kick of a weekend
21:54without,
21:56you know,
21:57taking away from the hard work
21:58that Mark Winterbottom's been doing
22:00for Frosty and Ford Performance Racing.
22:02A lot of bouncing there.
22:03Evidence to turn 11
22:04for Garth Tander.
22:06He's gone to position two
22:07with that lap, however,
22:08and James Courtney's teammates third
22:10and he's on a very good sector split
22:11to the end of the first sector
22:13on this lap at the moment.
22:14But here's the man
22:15that's on provisional pole
22:16at the moment
22:16with one minute and 41 seconds remaining.
22:20Scott McLaughlin's on a 22-2.
22:22That's nearly two tenths slower
22:24than Jason Bright achieved
22:25in the previous qualifying session
22:26a few moments ago.
22:28Will it hold up?
22:28And if it does,
22:30it's another new pole sitter this year.
22:32Oh!
22:33Delberto's gone to peak two again.
22:36So McLaughlin,
22:36Delberto,
22:37Tander and Courtney.
22:38Remember that Tony Delberto's
22:40in a Walkinshaw racing car
22:41the same as
22:43Tander and Courtney
22:45and Ingle
22:46all prepared by Walkinshaw.
22:48Coulthard now to seventh.
22:50He's Courtney,
22:51he's fourth at the moment.
22:54So they've obviously got that cluster of cars
22:56working pretty good there at the moment, Mark.
22:58Yeah,
22:59it looked like he just turned it into the last corner
23:01and had a little bit of an understeer,
23:02Crombo,
23:03but it's good enough to take him to the top
23:05with a 22-2-2.
23:07Well done, James Courtney.
23:08It turned,
23:09run a little bit wide,
23:11couldn't quite get it right.
23:12So there's a little bit of time left in that.
23:14That was not a perfect exit
23:16on the last corner.
23:17You reckon there's enough twos in all that?
23:18He's car 22,
23:19he's done a one minute 22.2221.
23:24There's Richie Beno when you need him.
23:28Courtney Mostert, McLaughlin,
23:30Delberto.
23:31Great job.
23:31Great performance.
23:3222-2-4.
23:34Now Bright's responded.
23:36No one's got closer
23:37to that time that Jason said earlier, though.
23:40Reynolds,
23:41he's looking quick to the second sector.
23:43Here he is on screen.
23:44Moffat,
23:44great job.
23:4522-3-6.
23:51One corner remaining now for Reynolds.
23:53He's behind David Ward.
23:54Lowndes came to the pit lane then in the background.
23:57Here's Davey.
23:58He's ninth.
23:59He's on a good lap.
24:00Moved into seventh.
24:01He lost ground in the final sector.
24:03The chequered flag is out.
24:04Who's on a lap?
24:05The chequered flag is on the way
24:06and dropped the RPM.
24:08Currently T7.
24:09Mate, T7.
24:10Courtney's had a pole already this year.
24:13That was wheels locked.
24:15Absolutely out of control.
24:17Feeding the gear
24:17and turn it in.
24:19He did a really nice job of that.
24:21And Courtney will give you a time now.
24:24And it's better.
24:2622-1-3.
24:28That was a better finish.
24:31The completion of Will Davison's lap.
24:33He's currently inside the top ten.
24:34And he stays in sixth.
24:38Mark Winterbottom, boys.
24:40He's gone against what I was talking about before.
24:42Nineteenth for car number five.
24:45So here's Jason Bright.
24:46A personal best first sector.
24:48A red box in the second.
24:50He will not threaten the time this time around.
24:53Currently he's on the front row.
24:54And same two in terms of bettering his time.
24:59You'd have to say for Scott McLaughlin, who's currently in fourth.
25:02So the two young guns again.
25:03Chas Mostert and Scott McLaughlin on the second row of the grid.
25:07Better than 23rd.
25:08That's for sure.
25:09Good job.
25:11Richard Holway.
25:11Better than 23rd.
25:12That was yesterday.
25:13And the second pole position of James Courtney's 2013 season.
25:20What a qualifying couple of sessions it's been for Jason Bright.
25:23A pole and a second position.
25:25Tony Dalberto again up there inside the top five.
25:28Gartander pushed hard.
25:30James Moffat will start the final race of the day from inside the top ten with Shane Van Gisbergen.
25:35In tenth, Jamie Winkup, 17th.
25:38Mark Winterbottom, third in the championship, 19th.
25:43It's a real mixed bag yet again.
25:45Jonathan Webb, bad qualifying effort from him and Alex Davison and Lee Holdsworth.
25:50As the Holden Racing team celebrate James Courtney's pole position here at Winton.
25:55You've got a lot of racing coming your way this afternoon.
25:58Don't leave us on seven score.
26:00Sometimes things get a little hazy.
26:05For the second time this year, James Courtney will start from pole position.
26:14Last time was at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin.
26:16And now he has mastered the Winton circuit to be on pole for the final race of the day.
26:21His fifth career pole.
26:23And he's second here at this circuit since 2010.
26:26Celebrates with the team.
26:27And he's with Barrettes.
26:30Hey, James Courtney, congratulations.
26:31Pole position.
26:32And this resurgence, this mid-year resurgence of yours is going beautifully.
26:36Yeah, we've been working really, really hard here at HRT.
26:39And, you know, all our hard work's been paying off.
26:41It's a team sport.
26:42All these guys, it's as much their victory as it is mine.
26:44But I'm happy to have the happy Gilmore.
26:47You want that, don't you?
26:48Yeah, it's fantastic.
26:50And Kaz and the kids are at home.
26:52We've had a tough time.
26:53So I love you, sweetie.
26:54And, yeah, it's awesome.
26:56I can't wait to turn it into a race win.
26:57Excellent.
26:58Have a great couple of races, JC.
26:59Well done.
27:00Cheers.
27:00See you, guys.
27:07Tony Dalberto, congratulations.
27:09P2 and P5 in the respective qualifiers.
27:12I love it when small teams like yours do well.
27:15But when you do it, what's important is it's not just hard making the car go fast.
27:18You've got to understand why.
27:19And I guess that's the hard thing now, isn't it?
27:20Yeah, I think this weekend we've taken a bit of a different approach.
27:24We're a bit more simplistic rather than try and set the world on fire with new development bits and this and that.
27:29So we're just trying to tune the car to the conditions.
27:31And, you know, we see off-rider that was quite difficult with the wet weather.
27:34But I'm really happy with the qualifying positions.
27:37You know, my best qualifying ever.
27:39So you've got to be pretty happy with that.
27:40You should be, mate.
27:41And it's an interesting term you use simplistic because it's a very technical game we play.
27:44But I see guys doing well at the moment that are sort of stepping back from that a little bit.
27:47You're a great driver.
27:48But sometimes you just need to focus on driving the car to the best you can and put some of that stuff out of your brain.
27:53Yeah, absolutely.
27:54And getting those small things right, you know, tyre pressures and those bits and pieces that sometimes can interfere with getting a good result because we don't tick all those little boxes.
28:02So hopefully we can turn the good qualifying car into a good race car and have a ripper day.
28:07It's great to see you up there, mate.
28:08Get in and hustle.
28:08Thank you very much.
28:09Cheers.
28:09Thank you very much.
28:39With Red Bull racing nowhere, you really needed to capitalise.
28:43And you're probably disappointed you're not on the front row.
28:45Yeah, I'm four hundredths off the front row in that second one.
28:47So I just said to a shippy engineer, I said, not a disaster, but certainly I'm a bit frustrated.
28:52I felt like I drove a couple of good laps there.
28:55And we're just, we're not quite there.
28:56But we've consolidated two reasonable good starting spots.
29:00We had pretty good tie life in that second race yesterday and a much longer race today.
29:04So, yeah, seeing the two 888 guys have a bit of a shocker.
29:07So these are the days you've got to make sure you grasp and grab the opportunity and grab the points.
29:12Sounds like you've got a good race car, mate.
29:13So we look forward to watching it.
29:14Good luck.
29:15We don't want to screw with it too much.
29:16It was good yesterday.
29:17So it's a bit of a confusing weekend at the moment for all of us.
29:20But, you know, we're in a solid spot.
29:22So let's go racing and looking forward to it.
29:24Good luck, buddy.
29:25Thanks.
29:25Cheers.
29:25Thanks.
