An elephant calf died after it was hit by a lorry on KM80 of the Gerik-Jeli stretch of the East-West Highway on Sunday (May 11), causing its mother to go on a rampage and damaging the front part of the vehicle. 00:16early Sunday. Grick OCPD Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmoud said the incident occurred around 2.50

00:23a.m. when a 28-year-old lorry driver was heading from Grick to Jurley. Initial investigations

00:29revealed that the driver, who was transporting chickens, spotted a large elephant grazing on

00:34the right shoulder of the road and continued driving, assuming it was safe. Moments later,

00:40a baby elephant suddenly emerged from the forest on the left and attempted to cross the road.

00:46The driver was unable to stop in time, fatally hitting the calf. The larger elephant, believed

00:52to be the mother, became agitated and attacked the front of the lorry in a fit of rage. The driver

00:58was unharmed. Police contacted the Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department, and officers

01:04managed to sedate the elephant to bring the situation under control. Superintendent Zulkifli

01:10reminded motorists to exercise caution when driving along the East-West Highway, especially

01:15in forested areas where wild animals often cross the road.
