00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, group arts editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely to
00:06speak to Emily Davis now. This is a very special show coming to Chichester Fringe. It's on Friday,
00:13June the 13th at Christchurch. In a way, so much of it is in the title Escape the Rat Race. It's
00:19a one-woman show with music. What was the starting point here then? What are you putting across with
00:24this show? There's another life out there, I suppose. For anybody who's sat behind a desk,
00:32it's not the only option available. I mean, perhaps it is the only option available to
00:38send this, but there's always something else that you can do, I think, is the sort of point.
00:41But you might think the thing you're going for is what you actually want, but it's not necessarily
00:44what you really need or it's going to be particularly fulfilling then. Is that the idea?
00:48Yeah, that is exactly it. I think it's sort of the, that's what we all do a lot of the time,
00:55I think, you know, is we sort of, we chase what we think we're supposed to go after. And then,
01:00you know, when you get it, it's like people say, be careful what you wish for. Once you've got what
01:03you wish for, it's only really then that you know whether you really wanted it in the first place.
01:08And you've kind of had this experience with your love of boats. That's the thing that you've
01:13discovered you really, really, truly want in life, isn't it? Yeah, I would, I've got a newfound
01:20ambition to sail around the world, which it feels, it feels a little bit out of my reach, but I just
01:28think, yeah, it's what I want to do. I've, I, I discovered a love for sailing a couple of years
01:37ago. Wanting is the first point, isn't it? That's the starting point. Do you think you might be able
01:41to do that? If you put the research in the training, et cetera, et cetera, that you might?
01:45Yeah, I think the thing is, I, I want to do it. I've decided that I'm going to do it. I have no
01:50idea how I'm going to do it. But that doesn't faze me. Because in my experience, the, as long as you
01:57know where you want to get to, and you keep going in that direction, eventually, you will get there.
02:04Oh, that sounds so much like my passion running marathons. You don't worry about too much how you're
02:09going to do it, but you've got to have the want, haven't you? Yeah, exactly. You will do it, won't
02:13you? Brilliant. That's what all the medals are for. That's absolutely, yes, yes. Yeah, my passion.
02:19You know, again, as you say, it's finding the things that really float your boat. Well, literally
02:23float your boat. Yeah, yeah. Front race then. You did it at Edinburgh last year, and you've refined it.
02:31Yeah. It's all your own music, isn't it? Yeah, so I did a work in progress version. And it had
02:39four or five numbers that I'd written with a couple of composer friends of mine. And after
02:48doing a run, and then we did a few other performances in November, when we got back to London, we sort
02:54of, it helped us figure out, you know, what else needed to be written and what else needed
02:58to be said. And so now what we've got, we've got a first performance of it in London next
03:04week, but then when we come to Chichester, that will be our second performance of this
03:08fully, I've never written a musical before, you know, a fully original piece. So I'm very
03:13excited about that. It's sort of, it's scarier.
03:18And then ideally, you will perform this, and then ideally, you will sail up into the sunset.
03:23Who knows? Yeah, that's the plan. Take this around the country. Manifest my dreams. That's
03:32what I'm doing. Well, well done you. Fantastic. So it's Escape the Rat Race from Emily Davis,
03:37and it's at the Chichester Fringe, Friday, June the 13th at the Christchurch. Good luck with
03:42it. And especially good luck with that sailing around the world plan. You've got to do it.
03:47It's got to happen. Thank you. Thank you.
