Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspaper. It's now
00:06
always lovely to speak to members of Chichester Festival Youth Theatre. Speaking now to Scarlett
00:10
Guilfoyle, you are playing Stepsister in the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre production
00:15
This Christmas of Cinderella, and really excitingly, it's your first time doing a big production
00:21
with them, isn't it?
00:22
It is.
00:23
And what's making it so special? You are obviously loving it.
00:29
It's just the unity within the group. Everyone is understanding. Everyone is there for each
00:37
other. Everyone is so kind and focused. Yeah, it's just such a lovely environment where
00:47
everyone understands one another.
00:49
That's a wonderful point to reach because you're saying so beautifully just now that
00:53
when you came for the audition, you knew no one and you were petrified. And yet now?
01:01
I have made lifelong friends and they are the nicest people I've ever met. So yeah,
01:10
it's just it's really I think it really highlights that if you're put in a room with a group
01:16
of people you've never met, don't be nervous because the likelihood is you'll be their
01:21
best friend within three months of knowing them.
01:24
Fantastic thing to say. And this is helping you towards, you hope, a career on the stage
01:30
or in acting?
01:31
Yes, hopefully. That is the end goal, be on stage or TV.
01:36
And when do you start doing something about that? You're in the sixth form now, aren't you?
01:41
I'm starting now. Drama schools, I'm hunting them down. Yeah, it starts now. And this is
01:50
the first big step.
01:51
Absolutely. And a big step because the challenge with this role, as you were saying, is you've
01:56
got to play someone who's utterly, utterly shallow, which can't be terribly easy.
02:02
Yeah, she is. She's ludicrous. She's insane. And that's why I love her. It's like, yeah,
02:10
no, playing a step...
02:11
She's nice, isn't she? She's horrible.
02:14
But she's so horrible to the point, it's just ludicrous. Like, she's so in her own bubble,
02:25
you just can't help laugh at her because she's so in her own world. It's just like, oh, here
02:30
comes a stepsister again. You all roll your eyes. But yeah, it is so fun.
02:37
Laughing at horribleness is not a bad response, is it really?
02:41
It's probably the best response that you could have.
02:47
So you're not envious of sweet Cinderella being all virtuous and nice?
02:53
I'm envious of Cinderella's power as a character. She's so powerful and she's so incredible.
03:03
I think me being cast as a stepsister was probably more suited for me. I think I've
03:13
played before with the sad, undergoing situation characters before. And I think now it's time
03:22
to spread my wings and try being a nasty piece of work.
03:27
Fantastic. Beautifully said. Lovely to speak to you and have a great time with it. Thank you.
03:32
Thank you very much.
