Judo Grand Slam: Gold Rush for Four Nations on Day 2 in Astana

Day 2 of the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam saw Switzerland, France, Italy, and Korea claim gold. Stellar performances, local support, and top-tier judo lit up Astana as the middleweights delivered a thrilling showcase.

00:00It's day two of the 2025 Judo Grand Slam in Astana, a city rich with both beautiful
00:06architecture and passionate Judo fans. The arena was filled with spectators,
00:11ready to see what was sure to be another day of exciting Judo.
00:15In attendance was President of the Republic of Kazakhstan,
00:18His Excellency Mr. Kasim Jomart Tokayev, alongside IJF President Mr. Marius Visser.
00:25The under 73kg final saw 2023 World Champion Neil Stump of Switzerland,
00:30up against Karbek Nagacher of the UAE.
00:34With seconds to go, Stump executed his signature technique, Uchimata,
00:40getting a score and then holding out for the win.
00:45IJF General Treasurer Mr. Nasser Altamini was on hand to award the medals.
00:51We asked Stump what it was like to fight in Kazakhstan.
00:55Yes, it's nice. I like it. You feel they love Judo. They like Judo. They
01:02scream really loud and a lot. And it's really, it's a nice atmosphere. It's perfect.
01:08In the under 63kg category, Melkia Oshkorn of France earned victory in a hard-fought contest.
01:14She was awarded her medal by IJF guest Mr. Elliot Moshoke.
01:22I felt good because Kazakh people I really recommend. And I felt that they were here for
01:29watching us, for encouraging us. And it was really great.
01:34At under 70kg, Georgia Stangelin of Italy competed in her first Grand Slam final,
01:40against Ying Ying Feng of China. Stangelin beautifully countered her opponent's attack,
01:46landing her in the perfect position to finish the fight with a hold down.
01:52The medals were awarded by CIFP Secretary General, the Honorable Sunil Sabawa.
02:00The under 81kgs saw Japanese two-time Olympic champion Nagase Takanori looking to even the score
02:07against Lee Joon-Hwan, with the Korean having a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head.
02:12But it was Lee who took gold in spectacular fashion.
02:18He was awarded his medal by IJF Development Commission member Mr. Khaled Barakat Ibrahim.
02:26The local fans were treated to an incredible day of Judo, with bronzes for both Yeset Kwanov
02:32and Abilaikan Zubanaza. The Ippons kept coming from the home athletes, with a great mix of technically
02:42brilliant groundwork and eye-catching throws. The passionate crowd had plenty to celebrate.
