00:00Well, I can't quite place the face, but I know evil when I see it.
00:03Here's a look at the Mattel of Matthew Universe origins, a real concept art, Hordak and Grislor.
00:24Masters of the Universe presents Sketchbook Series, featuring figures inspired by the original concept drawings
00:29of fan-favorite characters before they evolved into final forms of Eternia's greatest heroes and villains.
00:35It's really cool to see that something sinister could survive outside of a sketch.
00:39Before we get a closer look at the concept art of both Hordak and Grislor,
00:44let's take the tape measure and see how tall the figures stand.
00:46Sold is a set, pretty hard-to-find set.
00:49Luckily, I was able to find this at a local toy show.
00:52The guy was selling for $80. I talked him down to about $70.
00:55I think even walking away for a $70 set of two figures.
00:58In a concept design like this, I don't think that was that bad of a price at all.
01:02I'm going to be also bringing in a couple of Hordaks,
01:04and of course the Grislor we got from the Origins line,
01:06but that's, you know, again, not to get too ahead of ourselves.
01:08First, let's take the tape measure and see how tall the figure stands.
01:10The original concept of Hordak stands, yeah, at about 5 3⁄4 of an inch in height.
01:15That translates, though, to a figure that's 14 centimeters tall.
01:19Then on to Grislor, and he might actually be my favorite of the two.
01:23He's going to be a little bit taller.
01:24He's actually closer to 6 inches in height, or about 15 centimeters tall.
01:28So how about my Hordaks?
01:30Well, I've got a couple of these, so we're going to bring them right now.
01:32Here's the original Hordak.
01:34Although this isn't the original head sculpt, what I ended up doing was
01:36I took the head that came included with the buzzsaw Hordak,
01:38because it came included with two, and I essentially just swapped it out.
01:42I think the smiling face on the default Hordak works a little bit better.
01:45Speaking, though, of buzzsaw Hordak, here's the other Hordak I have.
01:48This one does have the open front chest,
01:50and of course it has a little buzzsaw blade inside.
01:51For a while, I thought I had lost the buzzsaw blade inside.
01:56Not that anybody really cares, but luckily I was able to find it.
01:58So there's two Hordaks.
02:00Probably more of the traditional look to Hordak that you're used to seeing.
02:03Very much a completely deviation than the original concept design of him.
02:07And seeing, of course, this is the design concept of Grislor,
02:10here's what the figure looks like with the Origins version of Grislor.
02:13Which, funny though enough, I actually found at the exact same toy store.
02:16Different seller.
02:16In both cases, I was able to also talk them down,
02:18and I almost even feel like I got Grislor for around $70.
02:21Even though, again, it wasn't sold.
02:23I didn't sell it as a set, but I got Grislor for about that same price.
02:26That's what I got for the concept figures here.
02:28So let's talk less about the toy shows
02:29and talk more about the accessories that come in clue with the figures.
02:31Now, if you were to really look at the things that come with both Hordak and Grislor,
02:35I mean, the only thing that they really have is a couple of claws.
02:38The claws are actually more designed for Grislor,
02:40and the claws just happen to be,
02:42and just reaching off to the side,
02:43the same claws that came in clue with Terrorclaw Skeletor.
02:46I thought there was a perfect use to reuse these again,
02:50because I think the only time we've ever gotten these claws
02:52were the ones that were attached onto the ends of Skeletor's hands,
02:55even though, again, you can't just attach these.
02:57Looking at the molding of the exact, well, looking at the two,
02:59you can see that they are the exact same mold,
03:01just one happens, though, being cast in purple plastic.
03:04Purple plastic.
03:05The other one is more of a shinier gunmetal gray.
03:08They attach the exact same way as well,
03:10so if you look at the inside of them,
03:11they actually have, like, little bracelets,
03:13and that basically forms around the forearm,
03:15and that just attaches onto the arms.
03:17So let's go ahead and do that.
03:18Or should we do that?
03:19Yeah, let's do that.
03:20So let's go ahead and we'll just snap that onto the arms here
03:22of Grislor on one side,
03:25and do the same on the other side.
03:27Now Grislor has...
03:28I mean, he was already kind of imposing already,
03:31but now the fact that you add these big metallic blades
03:33on the ends of his arm,
03:34boy, that's a pretty cool-looking figure.
03:36I mean, it does make him, granted, a little bit more front-heavy,
03:38but we'll kind of look at him more...
03:40I think I might, even though I've done all this now with Grislor,
03:43I think I might actually end up looking at him second.
03:45Let's first look at Hordak.
03:47Hordak looks interesting enough.
03:48Like, actually, if you go back and look at the history of Hordak,
03:50this is one of the original designs of the character,
03:52and he's actually seen a couple of interesting designs.
03:55At the time of also doing the review of this,
03:57I have also ordered the Hurricane Hordak,
04:01Hurricane Hordak from Mattel Creations,
04:03which there's actually a little more of a connection
04:05as to why I end up getting this figure,
04:06not just for the fact it's the original concept design of the character.
04:10Now, Hordak doesn't really have an accessory
04:12other than really just this large gun that he has on the ends of his forearm.
04:15It does look like you can detach it,
04:18although it probably would just be attached by a ball peg.
04:20The thing about it, though, is once you detach this,
04:22and I haven't yet done this,
04:24I guess you'd probably be able to put that onto a ball peg,
04:26but then basically what you'd be left behind is just a stump,
04:29a little stump and a peg.
04:30Like, I'm probably just going to end up leaving it on him.
04:32He's a rather interesting-looking character.
04:34I mean, most people, when they tend to think of Hordak,
04:36tend to think of this Hordak,
04:38more the pig face with the collar piece around the back of it.
04:42He looks less really like this version of Hordak.
04:44Kind of looks more like something you would see from the world of Mad Max.
04:48Still, though, you can see he's got some really cool detailing on the front of his face.
04:52Now, I say this also about, like, Hurricane Hordak.
04:56Not only was I super excited because I was always a big fan of that designer character,
05:00but I think also he has an alternate head sculpt,
05:03and I'm not going to say this too early,
05:05but this guy's probably going to be making an appearance for that review.
05:07But the head sculpt looks good.
05:08He's got the red eyes there.
05:09He doesn't really have a pig nose this time around,
05:12but what he does have instead is like a really gnarly-looking biker's helmet.
05:16Horns sticking out the ends.
05:17These are actually made of softer plastic.
05:19The fact that they've even gone into the back and sculpted in details that,
05:22you know, as a collector, unless you really turn the figure's head around,
05:26wouldn't even notice that it's there.
05:27The head sculpt does look quite good.
05:29I mean, again, the coloring is a more paler complexion,
05:32but I guess it's not that real different than when you look at the coloring of Hordak anyways.
05:35I mean, like, the coloring of his skin, it's pretty close.
05:38I'd say it's pretty close.
05:39And you can also really take the head off because, again, they have mixing-act capabilities.
05:43Just take the head off that one, take the head off this one.
05:45And, yeah, if you wanted to, you could put Hordak's head on here.
05:49I don't really think it really necessarily works.
05:51I mean, already I kind of already have an established idea of what Hordak's body should look like.
05:56I feel like maybe the head is a little too big when you compare it with the rest of this normal-sized body that Hordak has.
06:01How many H's have we just used here?
06:03And I suppose you probably could also use this armor piece, too.
06:06It looks like it attaches only by snaps on the sides.
06:08I'm not going to do it just because these never get back in place the way that they should.
06:12You just unsnap it here and onto the other side of the village.
06:15You just unsnap it here and just detach this.
06:17And if you want to use the armor for something else.
06:19The armor does have some cool spikes on the side.
06:21Now, I don't know if these are supposed to be, like, ripped material and why they can get away with not actually going into painting them.
06:27I feel like it's ripped material and not actually metal spikes.
06:30He's got this cool collar piece also around him as well.
06:33Let's go ahead and get his head back in place.
06:35There we go.
06:37Nice, like, a classic look of Hordak's symbol, though.
06:40I mean, it's really not that much different from the Hordak.
06:42Granted, yes, he's missing his head right now.
06:44But the Hordak's symbol is very similar as well.
06:46A little bit smaller bat wings.
06:48The head actually does have, it's got more of a point down below here.
06:51They sort of adopted the idea that Hordak's head would kind of take up the majority of the lower symbol.
06:56And then the wings would jet out the sides.
06:58I'm sorry, I can't have this conversation with Hordak's head missing.
07:00Let's pop that back in place.
07:03So let's move it off to the side.
07:04But, I mean, the only other thing that really, when you're seeing the two, his skin color is the same.
07:07The coloring of the black and the red are very close.
07:10But, like, this Hordak does have a lot more gray.
07:13I think the gray works really well with the character.
07:15Now, again, like, he does have this little, like, again, weapon attachment.
07:19For all intents and purposes, it does look like you'd be able to detach this.
07:22I haven't yet done it.
07:23I'm probably just going to end up leaving it on there, though.
07:25He's also got a belt piece that's kind of interesting.
07:27I kind of would have expected this to be molded to the rest of his loincloth.
07:31But what they've done instead, I guess it would, from a tooling standpoint, makes probably more sense just to have molded this as a separate piece.
07:38And then that could just easily go over top of the loincloth.
07:40Some nice, decently sculpted boots down below here.
07:43I suppose that's supposed to be fur down below.
07:45So it kind of has a little bit more of a furry trim.
07:48Like the red, I think the red and the gray work really well.
07:50There's a whole lot less, though, of gray here on Hordak than, you know, in the Origins versions of Hordak or really any iteration of Hordak tends to have a whole lot more gray.
08:00For the figure's articulation, the head's going to be on a ball joint, so it allows the head to rotate all the way around.
08:05The head's going to look down and look up, and you can also move it back and forth as well.
08:09The upper torso is only sadly going to be on a swivel.
08:12That goes with the territory of all Origins figures.
08:14This arm rotates all the way around, although sometimes I've noticed on this arm, when you go to swivel it, it seems to get so close in quarters to the torso, it ends up popping the arm off.
08:25As you can see, it's just easy to snap it back into place.
08:27This arm also hinges out at a T pose.
08:29The figure does have a swivel over here.
08:31The figure also has a swivel over here.
08:33Yeah.
08:34Single hinge in the elbows only.
08:36The hands do rotate all the way around.
08:37I shouldn't say that.
08:38I shouldn't say hands, plural, because he really only has one.
08:41This hand technically also does rotate all the way around.
08:43So it's only going to be, because it's only attached to a peg, that peg allows this to do this.
08:48The legs do split out.
08:50Not very far, granted.
08:51They do certainly go forward and back.
08:53There's a little bit of a mild swivel at the top.
08:55Single hinge in the knee.
08:56Swivels back and forth.
08:58This boot, by the way, the kneecap, the knee guard, I should say, and the rest of the boot looks like it's all one piece.
09:04So I suppose if you were to detach the foot somehow, and just, you'd probably be able to slide this completely off.
09:08But, you know, it finishes the look to Hordak, even though really between the two figures,
09:12I feel like this one's my least favorite, but I have plans for this guy.
09:16I have, yes, some good plans in store for this Hordak.
09:19For the ankle, it goes up and down.
09:21There's a nice ankle rocker.
09:22And, yeah, this version of Hordak, even though it being concept, does have little pants just to pull off pickles on the bums of his feet.
09:29So a good-looking figure.
09:30I mean, I think really, though, I mean, I think if they were sold separately, I probably would have been more interested, I think, to get Grizzlor.
09:39Just Grizzlor's got a little bit more of an interesting look.
09:41And, you know, just because you're a big fan of this look of Grizzlor, who has a whole lot more fur on him,
09:46I would probably just end up displaying this version of Grizzlor, I think, as a back-side character.
09:51He could be part of the Horde.
09:52He doesn't have to necessarily borrow the exact same name.
09:54If you have, like, a collection of Master Universe figures, it doesn't mean you have to follow the norm.
10:00This character being released as Grizzlor, he then has to be Grizzlor any other time that you're displaying this guy on the show.
10:06The thing I really like about Grizzlor is he's got a brand-new, unique head sculpt.
10:10It kind of looks like, well, it looks mostly like a woolly mammoth, long tusks sticking out of his face.
10:17Again, because this guy's not going to be on my shelf as a Grizzlor, I'll have to come up with some more clever of a name.
10:21If you can think of a clever name to call Concept Art Grizzlor, let me know down below in the comments section.
10:27I was trying to think of something along the lines of Tusk.
10:29I couldn't think of anything.
10:30I was thinking Tusk Tusk.
10:32Clearly, it tells me I have to spend a little bit more time coming up with a clever name.
10:37But I love the head sculpt.
10:38I think it's really neat on this figure.
10:40It sort of looks like he's also got himself like a breathing guard down below here.
10:43Maybe he can't breathe the regular air on that planet.
10:46He does have, of course, the Horde symbol that's also down here as well.
10:50It looks very faithful to the original concept sketch of this guy.
10:53He does also have the Horde symbol band there on the side of his body.
10:57It looks like they're probably using the Beastman body.
11:00I mean, that probably goes with the territory.
11:01Anytime you're going to have a hairy character, just pull it, obviously, from Beastman's body.
11:06What's cool, though, is that he also has this fur collar.
11:08Now, the collar goes, obviously, on the front here, and that's the part that's obviously part of his bandolier.
11:13He has a loincloth, which is really strange because the loincloth, being the same color as the rest of his legs,
11:17ends up just kind of looking like it's just all part of his body.
11:20Like, he's not really wearing a loincloth that just happens to be his body.
11:24These leg guards, these thigh guards, pop off quite frequently.
11:28So if you are getting this figure for yourself, don't be frustrated that yours is doing the same.
11:33Again, it just kind of snaps in place, but they fall off really too frequently.
11:37There's real no way, I suppose, around that.
11:39Then he has Horde boots down below here.
11:41Really interesting that they gave him, like, metal boots, like metal feet down below.
11:45Still, though, he has peg holes on the bottom of his feet.
11:48Now, for when it comes to Grizzlor's articulation, he's going to be granted a little bit more limited,
11:52just because there's not much that you can do with his head.
11:55Got to come up with a better name than Tusk Tusk.
11:57Up and down, motion of that again for the head, the waist swivels, and allows the body to do this.
12:02Arms rotate.
12:04Normally, I would, again, say all the way around, but as you're rotating across the top part of his bandolier,
12:09it ends up just popping off his joints all the time.
12:12So, again, we're just going to line everything up here.
12:15So, forward and back motion, let's go.
12:16We'll just stay with that.
12:17Forward and back motion for the arms.
12:19There's, again, that swivel here for the elbows.
12:21Whether you wanted to, obviously, display this guy with the claws or not,
12:24his hand's going to work the exact same way.
12:26And even though I kind of covered him over with his hair claw hands,
12:30you can actually see that they've actually done a nice job of painting his own hands
12:33with each of the individual nails and thumbnail colored in.
12:37Hands go rotate all the way around.
12:38You can hinge them back and forth.
12:41Grizzlore's legs split out about, oh, about that far.
12:45You can take the legs and move forward.
12:46You can move them back.
12:47There's an obvious little swivel there at the top of the thigh.
12:50Single hinge on the knee.
12:51I did notice, though, the knee on my Grizzlore is a little on the looser side.
12:55They don't seem like, if you're looking at the back of his legs, too,
12:59they almost like, they look like they could have been popped in a little further.
13:03And yet, when I try to do that, they don't go in any further.
13:06But it does seem like they, I don't want to say that they're not assembled correctly.
13:10Because, again, like if you're looking at Skeletors, Skeletors, I would say they're probably about the same.
13:15Obviously, different body altogether.
13:16But they plug in the same way.
13:19But I just can't help but notice that Grizzlores look like they're a little looser.
13:22Swivel on the legs, back and forth.
13:24Yeah, again, he's got the single hinge in the knee.
13:26The lower boots also do rotate back and forth.
13:28And I did notice, again, this guy, the packaging, while he was loose in some areas, he was tighter in others.
13:32The ankle is really tight to move on this figure.
13:35Not as tight, necessarily, to move the feet back and forth, but really tight up and down.
13:41Again, I got this set from the toy show that I went to just recently.
13:45And sort of when I went into that, I had an idea in mind.
13:47That's probably a good thing, too.
13:48When you're going to a toy show, or any show for that matter, kind of go in there with the idea, this is what I'm looking for.
13:54And then anything else after the fact just happens to be gravy.
13:58Grizzlore and the Hordak Concept Art 2 pack was the set I was kind of looking for, first and foremost.
14:03And I was also looking for the Masterverse Skeletor with Throne.
14:07Didn't find him.
14:08However, though, I did find one seller.
14:09One seller in the entire room that I walked that was selling this set for $80.
14:14I went up to him.
14:15Actually, I kind of went up to him the first time.
14:16I said, oh, oh, you got the Hordak and Grizzlore, which right away sort of sent out feelers to the seller.
14:22He already knew this guy was interested.
14:24Then, of course, I walked away for a little bit.
14:26And I thought to myself, you know, I don't want to walk too far away in case somebody happens to buy it for the $80.
14:30I went back.
14:31I kind of lingered around the area right around here.
14:34I was looking at other stuff.
14:35I kept looking back.
14:36Maybe he had caught my eye a couple of times.
14:38Anyways, needless to say, I walked back.
14:40I said to the guy, would you take $70 for this?
14:43I think it took only a couple of seconds.
14:44$10 for at least a set that he could sell.
14:47I ended up walking away with it.
14:48So, like, at the end of that, each of these figures ended up costing me about $35 apiece.
14:53To get, finally, concept arts of the characters, I know it's not really like the traditional look to Hordak,
14:58because for me, like, Hordak, you can't really beat the classic look,
15:01even though, like, this guy really kind of beats that look by, well, it's the original concept sketch of him.
15:06So, obviously, that's the way that Hordak would have looked before they went with the pig face that we're all kind of more familiar with.
15:12Grizzler is probably the most departed character when it comes to his design.
15:15He's losing fur altogether.
15:16Instead, he's getting a Beastman body, brand new headscope with a tusk face.
15:20That looks really super cool.
15:22And then when, of course, you incorporate some of Skeletor's claws,
15:25it makes for a much more interesting character when you think of the two.
15:28Obviously, I'm glad that this was sold at a set.
15:30It saved me having to try to track them down individually.
15:33And while I have more plans just to have Grizzlor on the shelf, as you're seeing right now,
15:37I have, I think, other plans for concept art as Hordak.
15:42And I think it has a lot more to do when we look at Hurricane Hordak in one of the upcoming videos.
15:47There are some Massive Universe figures that I'm not in a super hurry to try to pick up.
15:51Unfortunately, though, for the case of concept art Hordak and Grizzlor,
15:54these characters weren't ones that I was super anxious to get right away.
15:57And I was kind of thinking to myself, if I don't find it at the toy show,
16:00I'm going to wait for a while and maybe eventually they'll show up on eBay.
16:04I mean, if I didn't have any plans to review this set,
16:06I probably could have just done that and wait a little bit longer to get them.
16:09But as I happen to have just been going to that show for that day,
16:12I thought to myself, okay, the two things that I'm most looking forward to getting
16:16is the concept of Hordak and Grizzlor,
16:18because I thought to myself, if I could save the cost of shipping and the conversion costs,
16:23plus I'm not paying tax.
16:24And I would always really say, too, if you guys are interested to kind of track down some figures,
16:27check out your local toy shows, because the dealers that are selling them there,
16:31first of all, aren't selling anything with tax tacked onto it.
16:34You're not paying the conversion.
16:35You're not paying for shipping.
16:36You're not paying any of that.
16:37You see something on the table, you see for a good deal and pick it up.
16:40And you can always really haggle with the guys as well.
16:42Even if this guy, say, for example, was going to say like,
16:45sorry, I don't want to really sell it for less than the 80.
16:48I probably would have walked away again, would have just hovered around that table.
16:51He would have very well known that I was still there.
16:53And I would have walked back and I would have offered up the 80.
16:55Getting this set for the 80 without all the extra charges that go along with ordering something
17:00like this online, still for a steep, more expensive set, I think for like $80 and get
17:06two figures for $40 apiece.
17:08I still think that's not a bad price at all.
17:10Of the two, though, I still think Grizzlor is the better looking figure just because it's
17:13so unique.
17:14It's so different.
17:15Not that Hordak you can't make those same details and descriptions for, but with Hordak
17:19having more of a simpler looking face.
17:21Granted, though, he is the original concept design of Hordak long before he became pig face
17:25Hordak.
17:26It's still not probably as interesting for me as Grizzlor is.
17:29Grizzlor is just a really neat looking character.
17:31Can you think of any other ways of describing this or any other name that you give Grizzlor
17:35other than the obvious?
17:36Again, I was trying to think of something that included Tusk, but I was drawing a blank.
17:42If you can think of more of a creative name to give the new version of Grizzlor, the original
17:45concept for Grizzlor, let me know your name down below in the comment section.
17:49If you guys have had the chance to pick up the set, let me know what you guys think of it
17:52down below in the comment section, and as well, if you guys did enjoy this video, yeah,
17:56do it a solid, throw it a like.
17:58You guys want to stick around for more so?
18:00I certainly hope so.
18:01This, by the way, isn't going to be the end of the Master of the Universe reviews.
18:04In fact, there's going to be a lot more coming your way for the rest of this week.
18:06So, as always, thanks for watching.
18:08See you guys next time.
