00:01This is a Bangkwang Central Prison.
00:04It's a man's prison in Mountamburi Province, Thailand,
00:08on the Chai Prai River, about 11 km north of Bangkok.
00:14Bangkwang is the site of the man's death row
00:18and the execution chamber of Thailand.
00:23This prison contains around 6,000 inmates.
00:28This prison houses many foreign prisoners, mostly for drug smuggling.
00:36All prisoners are required to wear leg irons for the first 3 months of their sentences.
00:45This prison got its nickname Big Tiger by the Thais,
00:50because it prowled and ate people.
00:54The king Rama envisioned this prison, and it was created in 1927-31.
01:03It was built not to be an ordinary prison, but a penitentiary for the worst offenders,
01:11who are awaiting sentences of the Appeal Court, or a Supreme Court.
01:18It became well known around Thailand and Asia as one of the harshest prisons in the world,
01:24with conditions that caused many prisoners to lose either their life or their obscenity.
01:30The most fascinating aspect of this prison lifestyle was an internal class system called cheat system,
01:39in it prisoners received food according to their standings with their cantina,
01:45where only one bowl of rice and vegetable food was given free.
01:49Everything else had to be purchased.
01:54As a result, wealthiest prisoners made another inmate their servants,
02:00who worked for them for food.
