It's the biggest song contest in the world, but when it comes to voting, many viewers
00:04
are still left scratching their heads.
00:07
Each country awards two sets of points, one from a panel of experts, that's the jury,
00:11
and one from the public.
00:13
Both rank their top ten, awarding points from one to eight, then ten to twelve.
00:18
After the juries deliver their scores live, the public votes from across all countries
00:22
are revealed as one dramatic block.
00:24
This can lead to big swings, a song that flops with the juries might soar thanks to public
00:28
support and vice versa.
00:30
Then there's the so-called block voting.
00:33
Countries often seem to favor their neighbors, think Greece and Cyprus or the Nordic nations
00:38
backing each other.
00:39
Some say it's cultural connection, others call it politics.
00:42
Either way, the UK hasn't always come out well, although the tide may be turning.
00:47
In 2022, Sam Ryder came second, proving a strong song can still break through.
00:52
So can the UK ever beat the block?
00:54
Yes, but it takes the right song, the right staging and maybe just a little.
