00:02:11Mr. Chan, there's a lady out there to see you.
00:02:13Lady?

00:02:41Maybe sooner.
00:02:59To her.
00:03:02Mr. Chan...
00:03:05No.

00:03:49Uh-oh.
00:03:51Uh, Mr. Chan, uh, is the lady, uh, is she, uh, I mean, uh, is, uh... Hmm? Lady...
00:04:03Dead. Hmm?
00:04:11Call Sergeant Davidson, Homicide Bureau. Tell him to come over at once.
00:04:16Are you sure she's dead, Pop?
00:04:19Death, my son, is the reckoning of heaven.
00:04:24In this case, most complicated reckoning.
00:04:38Hello. Homicide?
00:04:41Tommy Chan speaking. Sergeant Davidson, please.
00:04:44Sergeant Davidson? There's been a murder in our house.
00:04:51Yeah. A Chinese princess or something.
00:04:59Uh-huh. Okay. I'll tell him you'll be right over.
00:05:03Hello, Birmingham.
00:05:17Where's Mr. Chan?
00:05:19Right in there with the call. Right in here.
00:05:22Whoa! What am I going in here for?
00:05:24Right in there.
00:05:26Hello, Charlie.
00:05:28Sergeant.
00:05:31Well, this is a payoff.
00:05:34Murder in the house of Charlie Chan. Now I've seen everything.
00:05:37Strange events permit themselves the luxury of occurring in strange places.
00:05:42Who is she?
00:05:43At this point, I am filled with ignorance. But she is lady of important family.
00:05:49How do you know?
00:05:51This ring tell me that.
00:05:54These Chinese figures mean something?
00:05:57Uh, translation, long life and happiness.
00:06:01But written with Chinese characters reserved only for those of highest degree.
00:06:06Of highest degree.
00:06:09You mean she's a princess or something?
00:06:11Should not be hard to determine.
00:06:18Poison dart, Chan?
00:06:20Yes. The window.
00:06:26Probably a blow gun.
00:06:28Correction, please.
00:06:31More probably European type air rifle. Very powerful.
00:06:34I have one such. Come.
00:06:37We'll present the same.
00:06:47See?
00:06:49Very simple.
00:06:51Just pull the spring back.
00:06:55Almost noiseless, too.
00:06:59Yeah, you're not kidding.
00:07:04You're not kidding.
00:07:07You're not kidding.
00:07:09Oh, Catfish.
00:07:11Good gracious of me.
00:07:14Mr. Chan.
00:07:16The court is making a phone call.
00:07:17What?
00:07:18Yes, I heard it myself.
00:07:19I was standing up in there and then I heard...
00:07:21Good gracious of me.
00:07:25Mr. Chan.
00:07:27The court is making a phone call.
00:07:28What?
00:07:29Yes, I heard it myself.
00:07:30I was standing up in there and then I heard...
00:07:32Good gracious, what am I doing in here by myself?
00:07:35City desk, quick.
00:07:39Hello, Mac. This is Peggy.
00:07:41How'd you get in here?
00:07:42Now look here, Bill Davidson.
00:07:43What are you trying to pull?
00:07:44If you think for one minute...
00:07:45Why don't you get in here?
00:07:47Through the window.
00:07:49How'd you know I was here?
00:07:50I followed you.
00:07:51I'm a bloodhound.
00:07:53Will you stop that?
00:07:54Now, Bill, I've got to get this story to the papers.
00:07:56This is the biggest thing that's cracked in weeks.
00:07:58How do you know it's a big story?
00:07:59How do I know it's a big story?
00:08:01Princess Mei Ling murdered in the house of Charlie Chan.
00:08:04And he wants to know how I know it's a big story.
00:08:06Why, you're the stupidest...
00:08:08Spit on.
00:08:09Excuse me, Charlie, but this is more or less a private brawl.
00:08:11Oh, the lady is friend of yours.
00:08:14Yeah.
00:08:15I'm sorry to have to introduce Miss Peggy Cartwright of the Morning Herald.
00:08:19This humble person agreeably honored.
00:08:21And probably San Francisco's biggest nuisance.
00:08:24That's not what you called me last night when we were having dinner together.
00:08:27It's got nothing to do with the police department or the Morning Herald.
00:08:29Well, try to date me up again sometime, Sergeant Davidson.
00:08:32Uh, pardon, please.
00:08:35We'll desire small information.
00:08:37You say you identify that lady as Princess Mei Ling.
00:08:40Hmm?
00:08:41How?
00:08:42Yeah.
00:08:43How did you know her?
00:08:44If you think I'm going to help out your department after the way you've treated me, you're crazy.
00:08:48Uh, humbly begging pardon to mention it, but would suggest ironing out the countenance.
00:08:56It's better so.
00:08:58Uh, how?
00:08:59I tried to interview her when she came from Asia on the Shanghai Maid about two or three weeks ago.
00:09:04Oh, I think I have recollection.
00:09:06It was on the 22nd, I think.
00:09:12I have it here.
00:09:15Princess Mei Ling and Captain Kong.
00:09:21Captain K.
00:09:23Captain K.
00:09:30Captain K.
00:09:31Princess, write this before she died.
00:09:34Hey, the sooner we get down to see this guy, the better.
00:09:36Yes.
00:09:37Let us write it to the face of our problem.
00:09:39Happen to know where live Princess Miss Cartwright?
00:09:41Yes, she had an apartment in Chinatown.
00:09:44On Grant Avenue near Benham Place.
00:09:46Uh-huh.
00:09:47That, uh, second stuff.
00:09:48Yep.
00:09:49Come on, Charlie.
00:09:50Okay.
00:09:53Since when is your name Charlie?
00:09:54You're not going to cut me out of this story.
00:09:56No, look.
00:09:57I don't want to cut you out of any story, but this is a man's job.
00:10:00Just sit down and take it easy and let's talk this thing over.
00:10:03Now, we're going to go down there and we're liable to get in a little trouble down there.
00:10:06And you wouldn't want that to happen to you, would you?
00:10:09So, if you'll just stay here until we get back.
00:10:11Now, wait a minute.
00:10:12You're not going to leave me chained up here like this, are you?
00:10:15I certainly am, baby.
00:10:16At least till we get a chance to look over that apartment.
00:10:19You'd have flashlight bulbs popping all over the place.
00:10:24Keep an eye on her.
00:10:25And don't let her near her telephone.
00:10:29Mr. Chan.
00:10:31Are you going to let that big baboon treat a lady like this?
00:10:34Uh, Chinese chimpanzee not interfere with monkey business of big baboon.
00:10:42Yes.
00:10:55Does anyone ever tell you that you're very good looking?
00:11:17Uh oh.
00:11:18Listen to that old honey and molasses.
00:11:25There we are.
00:11:46This is a police department.
00:11:47We want to see Captain Kong.
00:11:49He's on deck.
00:11:55In the passage.
00:11:56To the left.
00:11:57Thanks.
00:11:59This is a police department.
00:12:00Where's Captain Kong's cabin?
00:12:01In the passage.
00:12:02To the left.
00:12:03Thanks.
00:12:04This is a police department.
00:12:05Where's Captain Kong's cabin?
00:12:06In the passage.
00:12:07To the left.
00:12:08Thanks.
00:12:09Come in.
00:12:10Captain Kong?
00:12:11Yes.
00:12:12I'm Sergeant Davidson of the San Francisco Police.
00:12:13This is Mr. Charlie Chan.
00:12:14How do you do?
00:12:15I've heard of you, Mr. Chan.
00:12:16Flattered and overware.
00:12:17Won't you sit down?
00:12:18Sure.
00:12:19Yes, sir.
00:12:20Thanks.
00:12:21Come in.
00:12:23Captain Kong?
00:12:24Yes.
00:12:25I'm Sergeant Davidson of the San Francisco Police.
00:12:39This is Mr. Charlie Chan.
00:12:41How do you do?
00:12:42of you, Mr. Chan. Flattered and overwhelmed. Won't you sit down? We're investigating the
00:12:52murder of a recent passenger of yours. So? Princess Mei Ling. The princess? Murdered?
00:13:00Yeah. I must cable her brother at once. Question, please. Who is brother of princess? He is
00:13:09Field Marshal Chung Che. Have you any idea what the princess was doing in this country? I imagine
00:13:15sightseeing. This was her first time in America. She was educated in Europe. Could any of your
00:13:22passengers have done it? I hardly think so. There were just a few. We have little accommodations.
00:13:30No. No one I can think of. Uh-huh. Well, can you think of anything else that might help us,
00:13:35Captain Cohn? I'm afraid not. Well, as a matter of a record, I'd like to have a
00:13:39copy of your passenger list and crew. Certainly. That'll be easy. I have it here.
00:13:47Pardon, Captain Cohn.
00:13:59Thanks very much, Captain Cohn.
00:14:01Not at all. Uh, begging pardon to interrupt, but, uh, ship very heavily guarded, no?
00:14:07Just natural precautions. We're loading valuable cargo for Orient.
00:14:12Oh, yes, of course. Thank you so much.
00:14:15Oh, yes, of course.
00:14:23Oh, I...
00:14:27Oh, wow.
00:14:28Polite, old devil, isn't he?
00:14:45Yes.
00:14:46My little father wants a politeness golden key to many doors.
00:14:51Well, I guess our next step is a prince's apartment.
00:14:53Yes.
00:14:58Who were they?
00:15:19The police.
00:15:21Isn't one of them a Chinese?
00:15:22Yes, Charlie Chandler, detective.
00:15:28What did they want?
00:15:36You ought to know.
00:15:38What do you mean?
00:15:39Why did you kill her, Kelso?
00:15:41Kill her?
00:15:42What are you talking about?
00:15:44I suppose you don't know the princess has been murdered.
00:15:48Murdered?
00:15:49Yes.
00:15:50Why did you do it?
00:15:51You're crazy.
00:15:53I don't know anything about it.
00:15:54I haven't even seen the princess since yesterday afternoon.
00:15:58Did you get her check?
00:15:59Yes.
00:16:00How much?
00:16:01$250,000.
00:16:02How about my share?
00:16:04Well, look here, Kelso.
00:16:06She chartered this boat to carry airplanes.
00:16:08I put her in contact with you.
00:16:10Told her that you had flown with her brother in China.
00:16:13I planned this whole deal.
00:16:14I know, I know.
00:16:15You get your share.
00:16:17Where's the money?
00:16:18It's in the bank.
00:16:19I'll see you at the bank in the morning.
00:16:22All right.
00:16:23Very clever.

00:16:37You're pretty clever, Kong.
00:16:39Good night.
00:16:40I'll still see you at bank at 10.

00:21:00He was masked.
00:21:02There's a murderer.
00:21:03Can you tell me what he looked like?
00:21:05He had an overcoat and a black hat.
00:21:07Oh, swell.
00:21:09How did you get out of Chan's house?
00:21:11I asked Tommy for a cigarette and he didn't have any. So he went out to get one. And...
00:21:16Afraid unfortunate number two son, not chip off ancient block.
00:21:21How did you get into this apartment?
00:21:22I found the key in the princess's purse.
00:21:25It seems, Miss Cartwright, inevitable decoration to scene.
00:21:31Yeah, and was probably an antique, too.
00:21:33Oh, yes. Excellent rosewood. Many centuries old.
00:21:37Oh, Mr. Chan, I'm awfully sorry. But I had to get this story. I'll have the chair fixed and put it on my swindle sheet.
00:21:43Say, get this thing off of me. I've been wearing it long enough.
00:21:46What happened to you in there?
00:21:49Well, they knocked me out.
00:21:50Somebody knocked you out.
00:21:51That bag fell on your head.

00:22:32I don't know anything.
00:22:33Nobody knows anything.
00:22:35Uh, who visited the apartment?
00:22:37She had no visitors.
00:22:39She made appointments downtown in some office.
00:22:43Uh-huh. Nobody ever came here?
00:22:46No. No one except...
00:22:48Except who?
00:22:49Except a boy.
00:22:50What boy?
00:22:51A boy who lives in the basement.

00:22:54Uh.
00:22:56Oh, well...
00:23:10This a boy?
00:23:11Yes.
00:23:20Boy cannot speak. He is done.
00:23:23You mean Princess was friendly with him?
00:23:27Yes. He is from northern China, her province.
00:23:31He could understand what she said.
00:23:33How about you, Chan?
00:23:34No, not familiar with dialect and Cantonese.
00:23:44Ah, he saw a visitor.
00:23:46Yeah, so what? He can't tell us about him.
00:23:50He saw the man in the alley.
00:24:08There was a car in the alley.
00:24:10It was a big car.
00:24:13All right, what does that mean?
00:24:14It was a blue car.
00:24:15All right, so he wore a black hat and drove a blue car. So what?
00:24:18Uh, just a moment, please, Sanjay.
00:24:34Hey, wait a minute. What goes on here?

00:24:50Please, Mr. Policeman, please.
00:24:52Lily may be very frightened to stay here all alone.
00:24:55Don't worry, sister. There'll be an officer stationed right outside your door.
00:24:58But don't try to leave this apartment until you get an official okay from the police.
00:25:00Yes. You coming, Peggy?
00:25:02Yeah. Do you mind dropping me off?
00:25:04You sure you're all right?
00:25:05Certainly. Of course, I'm a little dizzy.
00:25:07Yeah, you're telling me.
00:25:09Look here, Bill Davidson. I didn't care for that last crack.
00:25:12All right.
00:25:13Let's go.
00:25:43Hello?
00:25:46Yes.
00:25:49Yes, second son of little wisdom.
00:25:53Gee, Pop, get a load of this.
00:25:56Li Qing, who belongs to my fraternity,
00:25:57took me down to see his grandfather,
00:25:59the head of the Hipsing Tong.
00:26:01I'm patiently waiting for load.
00:26:04Wait till you hear it.
00:26:06The princess came over here to buy airplanes
00:26:08for her brother's army in the Orient.
00:26:10Ah, information valuable.
00:26:13Good mark for number two son.
00:26:15Now, perhaps, can forgive
00:26:17for letting girl newspaper man escape.
00:26:22Yes.
00:26:23Very well.
00:26:23Goodbye.
00:26:24Ah, Mr. Chan,
00:26:25I got the big job waiting.
00:26:27Good.
00:26:28Desire to go downtown to
00:26:29Exchange Specie Bank
00:26:32on Market Street.
00:26:34Yes, sir.
00:26:35We are practically there.
00:26:40As soon as I saw the news of the murder
00:26:42in the morning papers,
00:26:43I decided to communicate with the police.
00:26:46I want to thank you
00:26:47for saving me that trouble, Mr. Chan.
00:26:49Oh, yes.
00:26:52Police already aware
00:26:54of bank connection
00:26:55with Princess Money Affairs.
00:26:56I'm not referring
00:26:57to those traveler's checks.
00:26:59There's a much more important matter.
00:27:01When she arrived here,
00:27:02she carried with her
00:27:03a draft on the home bank in China
00:27:05for a million dollars.
00:27:08And what's highly significant,
00:27:10she's cashed almost the entire amount.
00:27:13First, a cashier's check
00:27:15for a hundred thousand dollars,
00:27:17then odd amounts almost daily
00:27:18until she's only, I think,
00:27:20around thirty-seven thousand dollars left.
00:27:22Ah-ha.
00:27:24Happen to know
00:27:25to whom first check was drawn?
00:27:28Yes, it was cashed
00:27:30by a Captain Kelso
00:27:31who identified himself
00:27:33as the San Francisco representative
00:27:34of the Kelso Aviation Company
00:27:36of Los Angeles.
00:27:37I've kept things
00:27:39in my private file
00:27:40owing to the peculiar nature
00:27:41of the account.
00:27:50Oh, yes.
00:27:50Here's the Kelso check.
00:27:53Yes.
00:27:55Captain Kelso.
00:27:59Captain K.
00:28:03Officers in Bronson-Birding
00:28:05on Broad Street.
00:28:07Yes, I understand it is.
00:28:08And these are the various
00:28:10acknowledgments signed
00:28:11by the princess in Chinese,
00:28:13of course,
00:28:14for the other amount
00:28:15she's withdrawn.
00:28:17Yes.
00:28:18Tell me,
00:28:18you happen to have
00:28:20original draft
00:28:21presented by princess?
00:28:23Oh, yes.
00:28:24Here it is.
00:28:29It also bears her signature
00:28:31in Chinese.
00:28:33I have taken these
00:28:33out of the records
00:28:34of the bank
00:28:35and the expectation
00:28:36of turning them over
00:28:36to the police.
00:28:37Oh, yes, of course.
00:28:39We'll see that they get
00:28:40to proper party.
00:28:42Do not know
00:28:43with whom princess
00:28:44was dealing.
00:28:47Nothing she ever said
00:28:48would indicate
00:28:49that she was engaged
00:28:50in negotiations
00:28:51of any sort,
00:28:52but I could guess
00:28:53the princess
00:28:54was hardly
00:28:54sightseeing.
00:28:56perhaps this captain
00:29:00Kelso can give you
00:29:01some information.
00:29:03Yes, perhaps.
00:29:06You will, of course,
00:29:07see that those papers
00:29:07are returned to the bank.
00:29:09Oh, yes.
00:29:10Yes, will do.
00:29:13Thank you
00:29:14so much.
00:29:15Oh, not at all.
00:29:15Anything to report,
00:29:44officer?
00:29:45No, Mr. Chan.
00:29:45Everything's been quiet
00:29:46as a mouse.
00:29:56Strange.
00:29:58Meade go out?
00:29:59No, she hasn't
00:30:00left the apartment.

00:30:44Go tell officer, call Sergeant Davidson.
00:31:13Yes sir, I sure will, and if you don't mind, I think I'll keep on going, but I think I left something in the car.
00:31:19Yes, best place for a man with uneasy stomach.
00:31:24You said it.
00:31:30Uh, officer, in there at the mid, Mr. Chan, won't you?
00:31:36Yes, Mr. Chan?
00:31:41You, right, may not go out.
00:32:06You, right?
00:32:07Yes.
00:32:08You, right, may not go out.
00:32:10Yes, sir.
00:32:11I'm going to walk.
00:32:13I'm going to walk.
00:32:14Yes, sir.
00:32:15Yes.
00:32:16Yes.
00:32:17Yes.
00:32:18Yes.
00:32:19Yes.
00:32:20Yes.
00:32:21Yes.
00:32:22Yes.
00:32:23Yes.
00:32:24Yes.
00:32:25Yes.
00:32:26Yes.

00:32:35Yes.
00:32:37Yes.
00:32:54Yes.
00:32:56Well, death was probably instantaneous.
00:33:08He went just as fast as our friend the princess and by the same route.
00:33:12Yes, I think so.
00:33:15You think that's the way it came in, Chan?
00:33:17Oh, yes.
00:33:18Only other entrance to apartment.
00:33:20Well, let's go up on the roof.
00:33:22Was there already.
00:33:23Any trace of anyone?
00:33:23No, nothing except footsteps of a little Chinese boy.
00:33:28Well, let's see if he's around.
00:33:29He live in basement.
00:33:30This is the screwiest case I've ever been on.
00:33:33I'm up against a stone wall.
00:33:36You know, many times in past,
00:33:39Charlie Chan finds himself in the exact same locality.
00:33:44Well, let's go look the kid up.
00:33:46Yes.
00:33:53Must be this door.
00:34:04Hey, Chan.
00:34:18You think the little guy's double-crossed us all?
00:34:20Maybe he framed the princess and then framed us.
00:34:24Hardly think so.
00:34:25Yeah, well, I got a hunch that little guy can talk.
00:34:28I think that dumb stuff's just a gag.
00:34:30Okay.
00:34:48Sergeant.
00:34:50Yeah?
00:34:53I'll go.
00:34:54Well, it looks like the kid did it.
00:35:00Think so?
00:35:01Well, there's your air rifle.
00:35:03Would have been easy for him to hide outside your window.
00:35:05He knocked off the princess and the maid.
00:35:08Now he's blown.
00:35:09But he is friend of princess.
00:35:11Well, he probably moved in here so he could watch her.
00:35:13Let us start at commencement.
00:35:15First, princess come here to buy airplanes.
00:35:18Fighter planes must be smuggled out of country.
00:35:21Diplomatic reasons.
00:35:23Sure, it'll be shipped on a Shanghai maid.
00:35:24Could be so.
00:35:25Well, let's go down and search that tough.
00:35:27Good idea, but you go down.
00:35:29Personally, Chan pursue other line of investigation.
00:35:33Yeah?
00:35:33Yeah.
00:35:50Have keen desire to see Captain Kesel.
00:36:01Your name, please?
00:36:02Charlie Chan.
00:36:03Just a moment, sir.
00:36:14Chan?
00:36:15Yes, sir.
00:36:16You may go in now, please.
00:36:46Thank you so much.
00:36:52Oh, how do you do, Mr. Chan?
00:36:58Well, this is quite an honor.
00:37:01Overwhelmed, Captain.
00:37:02I knew you'd get around to me sooner or later.
00:37:05Would you sit down?
00:37:08I've been anticipating an interview ever since I read that the princess has been murdered.
00:37:11A contradiction, please.
00:37:14Anticipate we trace check from princess.
00:37:16Well, you see, I've been engaged in some rather delicate negotiations with the princess.
00:37:21Assume negotiating sale of airplanes.
00:37:24Yes.
00:37:25It's quite natural she should come to me.
00:37:27Her brother, Shanxi, was one of the best friends I ever had.
00:37:30Yes, of course.
00:37:31Do you know, Captain, that princess have withdrawn large sums of money from exchange-species bank of Peping, of which no trace found?
00:37:44No.
00:37:45She was supposed to make a second payment to me at the end of the week.
00:37:50Ah.
00:37:50Have, uh, no idea who might have planned murder.
00:37:54Well, that's hard to say.
00:37:56However, you know, the cause of Shanxi has many enemies.
00:38:00Have you any clues to work on?
00:38:01Well, uh, before she die, Princess Scribble on pad on my desk, Captain Kay.
00:38:13Captain Kay?
00:38:14Yes, uh, could possibly be Captain Kersaw.
00:38:17Well, I don't...
00:38:18Cannot tell me why she write your name, no?
00:38:22No.
00:38:24I only wish I could.
00:38:26I'm utterly bewildered.
00:38:28Yes.
00:38:29Shan, too.
00:38:29I don't have to tell you, Mr. Chan, this situation is distinctly embarrassing.
00:38:36I've made a great many commitments.
00:38:38And to put it bluntly, I'm left holding the bag.
00:38:41Oh, uh, very sorry.
00:38:43But unless Charlie Chan have exceedingly good fortune, may find self in very same predicament.
00:38:50Thank you so much.
00:38:51I'm glad to be of help.
00:38:53Yes.
00:38:53Just a minute, Miss Cartwright.
00:39:01He's on the telephone.
00:39:02Really?
00:39:03Anyone I know?
00:39:06Now, tell him it's for Charlie Chan.
00:39:07It's very important.
00:39:09Now, tell him we want it right away.
00:39:11Now, never mind.
00:39:11That's all.
00:39:12I'll talk to you later.
00:39:13What important information did Mr. Chan want?
00:39:16Why do you keep busting into my office like you owned a joint?
00:39:19Well, look here, Bill Davidson.
00:39:20Don't get tough with me.
00:39:21I might know more than you think I know.
00:39:23I've been tailing Charlie all day, and I think you'd give him some protection.
00:39:26That man's in danger.
00:39:28Listen, Peggy, are you holding out on me?
00:39:29Do you know something that I don't know?
00:39:31That wouldn't take much brains.
00:39:32Take that.
00:39:37Take that.
00:39:40Oh, so you want to play, do you?
00:39:51Come here.
00:40:00Now, tell me.
00:40:02What information did Mr. Chan want?
00:40:04That you'll never know, sweetheart.
00:40:06Sit down.
00:40:06Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me.
00:40:32Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:36Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:37Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:38Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:39Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:40Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:41Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:42Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:43Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:44Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:45Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:46Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:47Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:48Why, Bill Davidson, don't you walk out on me?
00:40:49Hiya, Buryan.
00:41:12Good evening, Sergeant.
00:41:14Now, Sergeant, did you find out who was popping them Chinese
00:41:17ladies off with the pop gun?
00:41:18Not yet.
00:41:19But if I were you, I'd watch my step.
00:41:21You're next on the list.
00:41:22They think you know too much.
00:41:24Not me.
00:41:25I'm wearing a bulletproof vest.
00:41:28Hear that?
00:41:29Not necessary for Birmingham to tap skull to prove head is empty.
00:41:34That's right, Mrs.
00:41:37I got the report from Los Angeles on the Kelso Aviation Company.
00:41:41It's a phony.
00:41:42We progress.
00:41:44Come in.
00:41:45Must thank number two son for this information.
00:41:48He was the one to find out that Princess buy planes.
00:41:52The address was an old hanger in Burbank.
00:41:54Hasn't been used for years.
00:41:57Very strange.
00:42:00Representative of company is supposed to be in big business deal with Princess.
00:42:05Much money involved.
00:42:07Yeah.
00:42:08There are too many questions that don't have any answers.
00:42:11Why should the Princess be murdered?
00:42:13What was the motive?
00:42:15What did she do with all that dough?
00:42:17Why did she come here to see you and who followed her?
00:42:19Why should the maid be killed?
00:42:23Many questions arise.
00:42:25All in good time we get answers.
00:42:28Now what happened to that little Chinese boy?
00:42:31I'd like to get my hands on him.
00:42:33I'd make him tuck.
00:42:34No trace.
00:42:37Not a sign.
00:42:39We've been through Chinatown with a fine tooth comb.
00:42:41We've watched the railroad stations, the bus stations, the air terminal.
00:42:46Little guy's vanished.
00:42:50Not can hide forever.
00:42:52I've had the best men in the department out to trace him.
00:42:55You know that little guy's the answer to a lot.
00:42:59Do not be too certain.
00:43:02Many times in the past it has happened,
00:43:04Charlie Chan hoarsely barking up incorrect tree.
00:43:09Yeah.
00:43:10Well, I'm going to shove off and get a little shut eye.
00:43:13I'll call you if anything happens.
00:43:14Good.
00:43:15Pleased to do that.
00:43:38Mr. Chan, watch them dogs.
00:43:39They'll chew you into a mess of yarkamy.
00:43:42Do not worry.
00:43:43I'm number one student in school of discretion.
00:43:53Ah, Mr. Chan.
00:43:55The boss is waiting for you.
00:43:57And these dogs, they don't going to hurt you either.
00:44:00How loud it thunder, how little it rain.
00:44:03Si.
00:44:04And these dogs, he's lying to a cat.

00:44:20No matter why, let's see.
00:44:21Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to assist you.
00:44:24Oh, Mr. Chan!
00:44:25What's he taking over?
00:44:30You must have enjoyed it with this.
00:44:32The wood in the chalkboard is covered.
00:44:32Why, Mr. Chan, I hope my dogs didn't scare you.
00:44:40They've been getting out of hand lately.
00:44:42Oh, not at all.
00:44:44Excellent guardians of master's domain.
00:44:47Do come and sit down.
00:44:50Scotch or bourbon?
00:44:52Well, neither, if you please.
00:44:55Oh.
00:44:56Well, I've been rather hoping to see you again, Mr. Chan.
00:44:59I'm interested in your investigations.
00:45:00Oh, thank you so much.
00:45:03Mr. Armstrong, how many times you actually meet princess?
00:45:09Oh, two or three times, no more.
00:45:12I see.
00:45:13Do you think it possible that person who draw money out of bank
00:45:19might not actually have been princess,
00:45:22might have been impersonator?
00:45:25I hardly think so.
00:45:27I'm sure I would have detected an imposter.
00:45:30Oh, yes.
00:45:31You certain?
00:45:33Quite certain.
00:45:35What makes you think there's a possibility the bank's been imposed upon?
00:45:39Well, very apprehensive signatures forgeries.
00:45:46Why, that's impossible.
00:45:49I'm certain I would have detected it.
00:45:52I know the Chinese language.
00:45:54I can read it and write it.
00:45:55But I couldn't be fooled.
00:45:57Well, just want to discuss matter, get opinion.
00:46:02I see.
00:46:04Oh, pardon me just a moment.
00:46:06Of course.
00:46:10Hello?
00:46:12Oh, yes, Mr. Allen.
00:46:14Yes, I want quite a nice headstone.
00:46:17Oh?
00:46:18Well, we'll look them over together.
00:46:21Thank you very much.
00:46:22Goodbye.
00:46:26I just buried one of my dogs in the local pet cemetery.
00:46:30He got vicious, bit the gardener, and I had to dispose of him.
00:46:33Oh.
00:46:34He also a large dog?
00:46:38Yes.
00:46:39I always keep two or three of them.
00:46:41I have more faith in my dogs than I have in any other guardian.
00:46:45Yes, I understand.
00:46:47Well, must be going.
00:46:49Time presses on his.
00:46:51Well, if I can be of any further help, don't hesitate to call on me.
00:46:54Thank you so much.
00:46:56I hope you're successful in solving this case.
00:47:00Well, thank you so much, Mr. Armstrong.
00:47:02Well, you know, sometimes think a successful detective,
00:47:05one upon whom luck shows smiling countenance.
00:47:10Good day, sir.
00:47:11Good day, Mr. Chan.
00:47:26Where's your master?
00:47:28In the library.
00:47:30Go call him.
00:47:30Okay, Mr. Armstrong, sit down.
00:47:48What's the meaning of this?
00:47:49Sit down.
00:47:50Armstrong, we'd like to know what happened to the balance of the princess's money.
00:48:00She drew it all out.
00:48:02Kelso here got some of it.
00:48:03Sure I did, but only a little.
00:48:06Where's the rest of it?
00:48:07All I know is she drew it out.
00:48:09We're going to take you down to the boat.
00:48:11Perhaps after a little while on the water, you will come forward with just a little more information.
00:48:15Why, this is ridiculous.
00:48:17Charlie Chan has seen all the papers in the case.
00:48:19You can check with him if you don't believe me.
00:48:21That reminds me.
00:48:23I would like to have a talk with Mr. Chan.
00:48:26Suppose you call him up.
00:48:27Ask him to come out here.
00:48:29I won't do anything of the kind.
00:48:32Call him up.
00:48:33The number is Major 4782.
00:48:47Hello, Mr. Chan's resident.
00:48:49Commence with the conversation.
00:48:51No, sir, Mr. Chan's in conference.
00:48:53He's in conference with the chief of police, the district attorney, the mayor, and the government,
00:48:59and I think the secretary of state.
00:49:01Conference over.
00:49:05The man with the dog.
00:49:07Humorous dialogue.
00:49:08Not very humorous.
00:49:09Mm-mm.
00:49:10Mm-mm.
00:49:13Charlie Chan speaking.
00:49:16Yes, Mr. Armstrong.

00:49:41We're waiting for things to develop.
00:49:42Hello.
00:49:46Hello.
00:49:47Hello, Ch-
00:49:48I was wondering when I was going to hear from you.
00:49:52Sergeant, maybe we emerge in shining garments of success.
00:49:57No, you mean it?
00:49:58I-
00:49:58Well, that's fine.
00:50:01I'm going to the home of Mr. Armstrong now.
00:50:05Much may be revealed by the unsuspecting.
00:50:10Meet me there.
00:50:11Sure, all right.
00:50:14Goodbye.
00:50:16Something's up.
00:50:17What is it?
00:50:18Oh, nothing at all.
00:50:19Just one of the boys checking in.
00:50:20Nothing that would interest you.
00:50:21Now, look, Bill.
00:50:22When are you going to stop being stubborn and let me in on this story?
00:50:24You'll get the story when I crack it.
00:50:26Well, I guess that's all for tonight.
00:50:30Why don't you drop around in the morning?
00:50:31Okay.
00:50:33You coming?
00:50:34No.
00:50:35I think I'll stick around a while.
00:50:37A couple of reports coming in from the pawn shop to tell.
00:50:40All right.
00:50:44Well, see you in the morning.
00:50:47Yeah, don't make it too early.
00:50:48Okay.
00:50:48Mr. Chan.
00:51:13Mr. Chan, be careful of them dogs.
00:51:15Do not have fear.
00:51:16Dogs will recognize friends.
00:51:18Yeah, but Mr. Chan, me and them dogs, they've been properly introduced.
00:51:21So if it's all the same to you, I'll wait right out here.
00:51:24We'll arrange formal introduction later.
00:51:27Oh, well, that's all right.
00:51:28Hmm?
00:51:35Hmm.
00:51:35I wouldn't go in there with all them dogs for all the tea in China.
00:51:39Good.
00:51:39Great.
00:51:39Good to meet you.
00:51:46That'll be our friend, Chan.
00:51:59All right, Chan.
00:52:03Well, an interesting situation.
00:52:07Our pardon, Mr. Chan.
00:52:16We were not sure that you would accept our invitation.
00:52:18Oh, disagree.
00:52:20On the contrary, very grateful.
00:52:23You know, a little too much to suit us, Mr. Chan.
00:52:25You've been a little too clever.
00:52:28Overwhelmed with compliments.
00:52:29I think we should all go down to my boat.
00:52:32It may be easier to convince Mr. Armstrong down there.
00:52:37And you, Mr. Chan, may give us access to the store of information that you have gathered.
00:52:42We're wasting time.
00:52:44Let us go.

00:54:40What's that?
00:54:41Nothing. Nothing at all.
00:54:43Where'd you find it?
00:54:45Right down there.
00:54:47Palace Hotel.
00:54:59Hello. This is the police department.
00:55:01I don't know what the number is, but I want the Palace Hotel.
00:55:08Hello?
00:55:10Yes, Sergeant Davidson.
00:55:14Room 461.
00:55:18It was occupied by Captain Kong of the Shanghai Maid.
00:55:23He checked out this afternoon.
00:55:26Boat sails at midnight.
00:55:27All right, thank you.
00:55:30Key belonged to the captain of the boat the Princess arrived on.
00:55:33Maybe that's our answer.
00:55:45Hello, Ryan. Davidson.
00:55:47Send a couple of squads down the Shanghai Maid, Pier 56.
00:55:51I'll be there ahead of you.
00:55:53Right.
00:55:55Come on, Peggy. Let's get going.
00:55:56Keep going.
00:56:08Okay, take it in.
00:56:09Good gracious of me.
00:56:10Good gracious of me.
00:56:40Hello, yes Birmingham, what, I'm down here by myself, Mr. Chan has made his departure
00:57:04to parts unknown, but he had a date to meet Davidson at Armstrong's, he left the house
00:57:09all right, but I don't think it was on his own accord, absolutely, you better hurry up
00:57:14and come down here to Pier 56, because I'm dubious about handling this thing alone, okay, goodbye.
00:57:22Sorry for this slight inconvenience, gentlemen, but necessity knows no law.
00:57:39Mr. Armstrong, you'll be given an opportunity of explaining what happened to the rest of
00:57:44that money, and Mr. Chan, when we're, oh, about a hundred miles out to sea, you'll be given
00:57:51an opportunity to swim back to San Francisco.
00:57:54Not very funny.
00:57:57Where's Captain Cornish?
00:58:16Up on bridge.
00:58:18Listen, kid, you wait here, I'm going to find out what this is all about.
00:58:29Now look, Bill, I want to...
00:58:30Wait here.
00:58:39Sergeant Davidson.
00:58:40Hi.
00:58:41Captain Cornish.
00:58:42Do you recognize that key?
00:58:46Naturally.
00:58:47It is to the room I had at the Palace Hotel.
00:58:48Where did you find it?
00:58:49In the home of the manager of the Specie bank.
00:58:50Oh, that was where I dropped it.
00:58:52You called on Armstrong?
00:58:53Yes, this afternoon.
00:58:54I firmed as a great deal of business through his bank.
00:58:56I went there to have some papers signed.
00:58:57There, uh...
00:59:18there, uh, seems to have been a little trouble over there.
00:59:20Trouble?
00:59:21Yeah.
00:59:22trouble yeah the front door was open the house was empty and the dogs were dead so what time

01:03:03murder charge stick we got them there oh you have got them yep kelso and kong they almost had any
01:03:09fools arrive in nick of time sergeant much later and charlie chan destined for a very long swim
01:03:15yeah well with a little luck we got enough on them to send them to san quentin for life
01:03:19you know confucius say luck happy chain of foolish accidents come on they're in kong's cabin yes
01:03:26there's our murderer we got enough on the other guy to hang him too kelso and kong i arrest you
01:03:44for the murder of princess may ling and her maid lily may wong now interfering with regret but this not
01:03:51so captain kelso and captain kong not murder princess what again regretfully interfering here is murderer
01:04:05why that's preposterous examiners in bank for several days discover misappropriation of funds also
01:04:14on my tip discover systematic manipulation of money of princess mr armstrong a very clever man gentlemen
01:04:25as soon as he find out that captain kelso and captain kong were swindling princess he make plan to steal
01:04:33rest of money princess only one who can testify that captain kelso have not yet received
01:04:40all of money so mr armstrong killed her feeling sure crime would be pinned on captain kelso then with
01:04:51mask on mr armstrong stole necessary papers later forged from apartment of princess where he was disturbed by
01:05:00her the
01:05:28by maid. He killed maid and carried off a Chinese boy who was later strangled.
01:05:34Oh no, the little guy's not dead too. Again, regretfully contradicting, but Mr.
01:05:41Armstrong tell me that he buried body of vicious dog in Pet Sematary. That's right,
01:05:47I did. I opened grave early this evening. Box contained body of Chinese
01:05:58boy. Your story of vicious dog, clever fabrication, Mr. Armstrong. Only happen
01:06:04all your dogs, vicious. There you are, sergeant.
01:06:13All right, get him out of here. Say, why are you arresting Armstrong? Because he murdered
01:06:33the princess, her maid, and a little Chinese boy. Holy catfish. I just called the paper and said that Kong and Kelso did it. They'll have an X-ray on the streets any minute.
01:06:34Yeah, well, that's your tough luck. You know, women not made for heavy thinking, but should always decorate scene like blossom of plum.
01:06:41Well, Pop, I guess that winds that up. It's a good thing I found out about those airplanes. That tipped the whole thing off.
01:06:47Oh, well, I uncovered that phony airplane factory in Los Angeles. That gave us our first lead. And if I hadn't have followed you to boat yet.
01:06:54Look here, if I hadn't bumped into Kelso, you'd all be out to sea by now.
01:06:57You know, a very funny thing, but seems somehow Charlie Chen never find out anything.
01:07:02And if I hadn't followed you to boat yet. Look here, if I hadn't bumped into Kelso, you'd all be out to sea by now.
