JP and BMitch rant about the ineptitude of the Nationals bullpen early in the season.

00:00Nats had a pretty good game going yesterday.

00:02And then they gave up, I think they gave up eight runs in the sixth inning.

00:06They are currently on pace.

00:11They could have the worst bullpen in Major League Baseball history.

00:15Yeah, well, when I talk to Bees, he was like, the bullpen blew it again.

00:20I was like, okay.

00:22But, see, that's something right there that annoys me

00:25because it's been a problem for a long time.

00:28It's not like it just started.

00:30So, you have to fix that.

00:35Before yesterday's game, the Nats bullpen had a 7.16 ERA.

00:40I know people like more advanced stats.

00:42I like ERA and batting average.

00:44Call me old-fashioned.

00:45They had a 7.16 ERA in the bullpen going into yesterday.

00:49After that game, 7.22.

00:52Currently, the worst bullpen since 1950 is 7.06 by the Phillies in 2020.

01:05I'm sorry.

01:06Yeah, in 2020.

01:07So, we already beaten that.

01:08By two-tenths of a point.

01:10By two-tenths.

01:11Like, I mean, that's significant.

01:12I mean, this, maybe they figure it out.

01:18To me, I think the bullpen situation is like a direct result of not spending any money.

01:25Right?

01:26Because if you want a couple good relievers, that's not paying for Soto or Trey Turner's contract.

01:34But you spend a little money on some good relievers, known quantities in the majors that can get you out in the seventh, eighth innings.

01:42Because Finnegan's been good.

01:43When they can get to the closer, he's been closing it.

01:46Yeah.

01:47But.

01:47You got to get there.

01:48Where you, where, where there's no money spent is those middle reliever guys.

01:53And it's pretty damn apparent.

01:56Yeah, you got to be able to, once you take your starter out, you need to have people that are effective enough to get them to the closer.

02:03But if you get to the closer and then the game is just going the other direction, hell, you might not much want to put him in.

02:14I mean, they up by how many points?

02:22Everything with the Nats, as much as James Wood's really exciting, CJ Abrams is hitting, Mackenzie Gore's been good.

02:28Like, there's, you can look, and hell, we're two blocks away.

02:31You can look over there, and there's real reasons for excitement.

02:36Have, one, it's just awesome to watch young baseball players as they figure out who they are.

02:41They are in the game and are exciting, right?

02:44That's one.

02:45Two, if you want to think bigger picture, you can see real pieces for long-term success.

02:51But everything with that organization circles back to ownership's complete unwillingness.

02:57I'm not going to say inability.

02:58They have the ability.

02:59They've shown that ability.

03:00They are unwilling to spend in a game that requires spending.

03:06And, dude, that team's pretty good.

03:09They're going to flirt with 500.

03:11I think they end up somewhere around 75, 70 wins.

03:16If they spent a modicum of cash, if they were middle of the road in spending, you might be

03:28But they refuse to spend.
