Maidstone Raiders host memorial football match

The fundraisers commemorates two club members who died in a car crash.  Henry Luck reports.

00:00They may have been part of their team, but to the Maidstone Raiders, they were family.

00:06To honour the lives of Charlie Bolt and Rhys Van Satiema, who both died in separate car

00:11crashes in Sittingbourne and Snodland, a charity match was held at Gallagher Stadium between

00:17the Raiders and the Old Rectory FC.

00:20Every year since their death we've done a charity match to raise money to pay for the

00:26Raiders.

00:27If you look at the guys out there at the moment you'll probably see someone with RVS shirts

00:33on.

00:34That's Rhys Van Satiema, so he bought shirts from the last charity match in his memory and

00:39the guys are wearing them today to obviously remember him.

00:42A lot of the players in that team are the players that played with him, so it's coming together

00:49and obviously celebrating their lives.

00:52The Mayor of Maidstone even turned up to show the team his support as the Maidstone Raiders

00:58host the third anniversary of these remembrance matches.

01:02Well it's very very sad you know and it's something, it's very difficult I think to explain really

01:11but for me I'm a supporter of Mason United and to me losing two players is something that's

01:19extraordinarily sad.

01:20It's sad for the families and it's sad for the club as well.

01:24So it's something we need to keep in our memories.

01:27Money raised from the match will be going towards the Raiders which will help to fund

01:32the local disability team.

01:34It was a close game but the Raiders managed to take the win for free.

01:57But not being a league match, the main focus was to remember Rhys and Charlie.

02:03There's an even bigger goal here today and that's making sure that the memories of Rhys

02:08and Charlie here with the Maidstone Raiders is never forgotten.
