Thousands gather for 40th Live Aid anniversary at Leeds Castle Concert

A sea of people and Union Jacks turned up for the sunny weather and local artists at Leeds Castle's annual celebration.  Henry Luck reports.

00:00The sound of a cannon firing is always used to signal the beginning of the Leeds

00:07Castle concert and with it thousands of people gather for an evening of music and wonder.

00:15I've made it inside the Leeds Castle concert. Let's go and see what's on offer.

00:21Leeds Castle celebrated the 40th anniversary of Live Aid, an iconic charity concert which

00:29raised money for the country of Ethiopia, which suffered a famine from 1983 to 1985.

00:37We're blessed with an absolutely glorious day. The weather's been really kind to us. In

00:43front of me I can just see a sea of people and Union Jacks and people enjoying themselves,

00:49family groups, special occasions, everyone's having a really great time.

00:53Plenty of people were also encouraged to come in their British best.

00:57Leeds Castle is absolutely fantastic. It's a great day. If you choose any day, Leeds

01:03Castle, classic concert, is the best package to do.

01:06Every year, the last six years, we've had an absolutely fantastic time.

01:11It gets better every year.

01:13You've come for four years.

01:15You've come for four years, yeah, you have, haven't you?

01:19Catching up with friends in the sunshine, having lots of drinks and flinging the chickens.

01:28There was also plenty of local talent, including the Maidstone Voices Choir, who performed after

01:35winning the Kent Sings competition.

01:37Five, six, six, five, six, five, six, five, six.

01:40Yeah, yeah.

01:41What does that mean to you?

01:42It means an awful lot because it was a time when these wonderful people said, let's just

01:49make like a, almost like a Mexican wave of joy and hope and love across the planet.

01:53At that time is, I can't remember what the figures were, but an astronomical number of

01:57people around the globe watched that event.

01:59And I think to just recreate some of the goodwill and the beautiful love of fellow man through

02:07the joy of music has been really lovely for us to be a part of today.

02:11The Leeds Castle concert ended like it started, with a bang, complete with a spitfire, cannons,

02:18and fireworks.

02:20With it, people will hopefully remember this summer night for years to come.
