From antique beaded purses to sporting legends.
00:13
It's a really beautiful show and a really accessible show for everyone.
00:18
I think for visitors to the city, they'll certainly get a sense of,
00:21
oh, well these are some stories about people who live here.
00:24
What can I learn about this city through this exhibition?
00:28
Collecting objects and artefacts has long been a process throughout time
00:32
that preserves a piece of history,
00:34
and collectors have effectively become hands-on historians.
00:38
One of the many collectors that's featured in the Museum of Brisbane's
00:41
precious exhibition is Donny Tahire.
00:44
Donny, thanks so much for joining us on News Breakfast.
00:47
Good morning.
00:48
Tell me a bit about what's going on here.
00:50
What do you have in your collections?
00:52
It sort of varies to a slight degree,
00:55
but it's mostly things that are surrounding or relating to Brisbane,
00:59
which sort of makes sense to me because we kind of live here.
01:03
I kind of live here, but I think if I lived in Adelaide,
01:05
it'd be all Adelaide stuff, so yeah.
01:07
And you've got ceramics, records, posters.
01:10
How did you get into that?
01:12
I guess it all just starts with one piece,
01:15
and then it just multiplies from there, you know,
01:17
because no two things are ever the same.
01:19
And when you have an eclectic taste like I do,
01:22
you can, you know, develop quite a big collection of things
01:25
because you might collect music that's punk or jazz or blues
01:30
or, you know, unusual things.
01:32
So, yeah, and it just all of a sudden just starts to multiply.
01:35
These are just some of the wonderful treasures
01:38
collected by everyday Queenslanders,
01:40
now on show to the world as part of the precious exhibition.
01:44
And for Mikey Hilberger, you could say he's got razor-sharp taste.
01:49
It's only part of my axe collection, about 30 of them here,
01:53
and it's a big variety from sort of around the world,
01:56
and they're all different types for different jobs,
01:59
but, yeah, it's pretty impressive.
02:01
And tell me what got you into collecting axes?
02:04
I started it through doing competition barbecue,
02:07
and we had to chop firewood to fire up the smokers,
02:10
so it just seemed right to have a really nice axe,
02:13
and one turned into two, and two turned into 120.
02:17
Mikey's wife, Lizzie, also a keen collector,
02:20
but for the more softer things in life.
02:23
I started collecting in my mid-twenties,
02:26
and I really appreciated the domestic side of women's needlework,
02:33
from everyday wear to their dresses to beaded bags to linens,
02:40
and I think the beaded area of purses particularly attracted me with their fine design.
02:46
Textiles are often difficult to preserve because they don't like humidity,
02:51
they don't like sunlight, they don't like damp,
02:54
so really the purses don't come out unless there's an event like this.
02:59
It's a real honour to be invited to have your collection displayed at somewhere like this,
03:05
and for it to be up for a year for people to see is wonderful.
03:10
So, as I said, they stay in the dark otherwise,
03:14
so it's an opportunity for them to shine.
03:16
And shine they do.
03:18
Please don't use an ultimatum.
