00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Portugal, the final race of the afternoon here on MXGPTV.com.
00:35The MXGP qualifying race, 20 minutes plus two laps.
00:39We are in Agata for round seven of the FIM Motocross World Championship.
00:44This is the MXGP of Portugal.
00:47The dry, sandy circuit that we had first thing this morning, is anything but that right now?
00:53It is improving, but do we get more rain? Do we not? Who knows?
00:58We've had a lot of good weather coming into this weekend, but it wouldn't be MXGP without a big rain cloud hanging over it, would it?
01:06Cozart, France, now here.
01:10Twelve months some from the last time when we saw nothing but rain and mud here in Portugal.
01:15But with Batalon, so will the riders, so will the mechanics.
01:17But you can see lurking there in the background, the storm clouds may be brewing again for the MXGP qualifying race.
01:27No championship leader, Tim Geiter, had that crash on lap three in MXGP race two in Switzerland.
01:33He went down hard, dislocated the shoulder, and he is going to miss this round, is what we can say officially for now.
01:45Will there be more rounds missed?
01:47Who knows?
01:51But the racetrack here, pretty much at altitude, we're not far away, about half an hour from the coast, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean.
01:58Just over 1,600 metres long.
02:05And just after the finish line, as we hit those jumps, we go left, right.
02:09We've got a new, where those arrows are, we've got a new tabletop there, and that takes us to the outside of the old pit lane.
02:14Anyway, a few moments ago, Lisa Layland was down on the grid.
02:16She caught up with somebody who lives not too far from here, even though he's Spanish, Ruben Fernandes.
02:21Before that, Max, Maxime Renault, does he ride, doesn't he ride, does he ride, does he not ride?
02:26That was the PR releases going out on him this week.
02:29Here's Lisa.
02:31So we're almost ready for the final race of the day, the MXGP qualifying race.
02:35Now I have to speak to Monster Energy Yamaha factory MXGP rider Maxime Renault, because it was very much on Friday.
02:41Will he, won't he, will he, won't he?
02:44One minute you're racing, next minute you're not.
02:46What is going on there?
02:47It's all very confusing for us.
02:48Yeah, I never had any doubt in my head, it was just messing with you guys.
02:51Okay.
02:52No, no, actually.
02:53No, you're keeping us on our toes, I like that.
02:55No, actually it was not the plan to come this weekend, but on Thursday, like, we had a good evolution during the week.
03:03And yeah, on Thursday I was just sitting at home and I was like, no, I can't miss.
03:08And I will bite myself, let's say, if something happens in the championship and I come back on my good fitness level
03:15and somehow be able to fight for a good position.
03:18So I want to give my all, like always, and I'm happy to be here.
03:21Yeah, well, we're happy to see you here as well and we hope that you're okay.
03:24But also, in terms of this race today, changing conditions all day, but tires, roll-offs, managing the conditions of the bike and everything,
03:33it's a lot of factors to think about.
03:34The start?
03:35Yeah, a lot of stuff.
03:36Actually, the start will be really important.
03:39And the track changed a lot.
03:41So we had a very, very hot pack and dry conditions for practices and now it's completely different.
03:48So it's going to be interesting and let's make the most of it.
03:51That's a lot for the race.
03:52Thank you, Max.
03:53Let's grab a few words with Team HRC Ruben Fernandez, mainly because I know that you live just over the border from here, north.
03:59It's pretty much, I guess it's probably like the closest thing to your home, to home race, apart from Spain, of course.
04:05Yeah, definitely.
04:06I've always said that this is like a home GP for me, out of home.
04:11A lot of people from my region is coming over, a lot of friends, people that show me grow up as a rider and that knows me since I'm a kid.
04:23They come over and I get a lot of support, not only from the Spanish people from my region and all the rest of Spain,
04:29but also from Portugal because since I was a kid I used to come racing a lot of nationals here.
04:35So, you know, I love Portugal, I love the people, the food, everything, the country itself.
04:43And I always enjoy coming, racing here, especially because it's one of the best tracks I think we have.
04:50So it's always fun.
04:52I don't know, on these conditions today it's going to be tricky, but surely we can get the best out of it.
05:00Best of luck for the race.
05:00Thank you, Ruben.
05:01Okay, good luck there to Ruben.
05:03It's time for the MXGP qualifying race.
05:24Well, it's the riders headed out on track for their sighting lap.
05:29Tony Cairoli and Stefan Evertz, just 19 world titles between them then.
05:38Having a bit of a gander, a bit of a chit-chat.
05:43Good to see them both here.
05:45Stefan's been a bit quiet this year, but great to see the GOAT here this weekend.
05:49In pre-practice, Roman Fevra set the pace with a time 1.44, 4.31, just edging out Glenn Koldenoff, Kevin Haugmo, Ruben Fernandes and Calvin Vellandrin.
05:59But in the time practice, when it mattered for the gate pick, it was Lucas Kunin on the Red Bull KTM.
06:031.45, 4.56.
06:05He was five hundredths quicker than Roman Fevra on the Karaseki Racing Team machine.
06:11Jeffrey Hurlings on his final lap got himself to within a tenth of the Frenchman.
06:16Then Kevin Haugmo's Honda Motor Blues SR Motul machine was about five hundredths behind the bullet.
06:22Then we had Vellandrin, Pansa as well.
06:25And those first six riders, including the Ampantza, all in the 1.45 territory.
06:32Koldenoff, the first of the 46s.
06:34Good to see Paul Jonas back this weekend for KRT.
06:38Jeremy Siwa, Jago Keats, Maxim Renaud.
06:41Again, as you heard in the pre-grid interview there, will he, won't he, should he, shouldn't he, did he, whatever.
06:46Good to see him there lining up.
06:48He was 11th in time practice.
06:49We've got also to say, Mattia Guadagnini back this weekend as well.
06:55Lucas Coonan, fresh off of his victory in Switzerland.
07:01We've been lining up first for the first time this year in time practice.
07:06And first time on pole for the qualifying races here in MXGP.
07:12Look at those fluffy clouds, top left corner of your screen.
07:15See the way they're moving towards us, the flags blowing towards us as well.
07:18Those dark clouds are getting closer as well.
07:21Lucas Coonan, it's not often you see him looking behind.
07:24Certainly in Switzerland, he was just looking forward.
07:27One-way traffic for the Belgian.
07:29Will it be the same again here today?
07:31Or maybe even over the course of the weekend?
07:33Roman Fevra, with no Tim Geiser, lines up 27 points behind the championship leader, Geiser.
07:40We do expect to see a change of championship lead this weekend.
07:44But the red plate, will it fall into the hands of Fevra?
07:47Or will it be Coonan?
07:49Probably Coonan just a little bit too far off the pace at the moment.
07:53Jeffrey Hurlings, working his way back into fitness.
07:56Working his way back into contention as well.
07:59Currently, the bullet sits 18th in the championship chase.
08:05Don't take too much into that, though.
08:08Kevin Haugmo was impressive in time practice with fourth.
08:14And Calvin Vellandren, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP.
08:18He'll go to the line in fifth.
08:19And for Vellandren, every time practice session this year, he has been inside the top ten.
08:34Ninth was his lowest, which was Argentina.
08:37Jeremy Seewa was on our studio show earlier.
08:40He will go to the line in ninth place, fresh off of his podium in Switzerland at home two weekends ago.
08:45And good to see Pauls Jonas, PJ back, Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP victorious here last year on Sunday when it mattered, of course.
08:56Eighth in the time practice session.
08:59Maxime Renault.
09:02Eleventh for him.
09:04That will be his gate pick.
09:06But he knows he needs to get a good start, score points like everybody else.
09:09Alongside him, his number 93 teammate, Iago Kietzen, Roman Mosteik, Ruben Fernandes.
09:14The 87 of Brumman, the 11 of Adam Sterry, and then the 189 there of Brian Bogers.
09:19And if you come the other way, you've got Jeremy Seewa and the rest.
09:24Paul, I don't know if we'll make it through this race without a bit of a deluge, do you?
09:32Coonan and Fevra, third and second in the championship respectively.
09:37Will there be some shenanigans, fun and games, as they get out over the gate?
09:42Coonan has a bit of room to work to his left.
09:43But Roman Fevra doesn't, if the Belgian was to turn right out of the gate and scupper the chances of the Frenchman.
09:52The fly race in 15-second border, all eyes on the 96 and a three.
09:57But there may be one or two surprises, maybe one or two stings in the tail of this qualifying race.
10:01A good reaction there from both riders.
10:05But it's Fevra who runs it wide, hurlings alongside him.
10:09Where did that start come from, from the bullet?
10:11Number 84, quick pull of the tear-offs there as he reaches turn two.
10:15Fevra runs into trouble on the exit of the turn, and Coonan immediately takes over the lead.
10:20Looks like they've been down there with the machine as well during the break, just to tidy things up.
10:25Ah, still trying to pull tear-offs and roll-offs there.
10:27Coonan almost came undone.
10:28Somehow he manages to keep it on two wheels, but he's lost that lead to Roman Fevra, who leads as they hit the line at the first time.
10:42Coonan second, hurlings third, but alongside him Calvin Ballander, and as they go into turn, oh, and Fevra tips over.
10:50Throws away a golden opportunity here.
10:53Wow, we said there may be a sting in the tail.
10:56We didn't expect it to come about six turns into the race.
11:03So Roman Fevra, now with a bit of work to do.
11:08His teammate, Paul Jonas, the lead, Kao Saki.
11:11Lucas Coonan leads, hurling second, Wallander in third, Jonas fourth, fifth for Jeremy Siwa.
11:17Then we've got Horgmo.
11:18Watch this here, top of the screen, just rushing the corner, potentially Roman Fevra.
11:25Berm just collapsed on him, just came in too hot, expecting it to be sticky.
11:29It wasn't, it was tricky.
11:31He goes down, picks himself up.
11:33He's in a roundabout ninth place at the moment.
11:37But what an advantage that is for Lucas Coonan.
11:41Clear track.
11:48Hurling's there second, Wallander in third.
11:52Conditions may favour Geoffrey Hurling's in the fact that just a slightly lower pace, he can ride his way in, maybe less arm pump.
12:00Fulandren not taking chances to go into the outside lines there, as Jeremy Siwa did in that fifth position.
12:13Fevra behind him in sixth.
12:14So the Frenchman already recovering well.
12:17There's everybody here tiptoeing around the opening lap.
12:19Fevra going for Broke.
12:21Just a few positions further back.
12:23Here's Coonan.
12:30So Coonan dropping downhill.
12:33Hurling's second.
12:34Wallander in third.
12:35Jonas four.
12:36Siwa five.
12:36Fevra six.
12:37And he's all over the back of Siwa as we hit the takeoff on the liquid molly jump.
12:45Coming into view any moment now, you'll see the flash of green just there.
12:48He's gone to the inside.
12:50Looking to find his way quickly past Jeremy Siwa, who gets held up there behind Jonas.
12:55As they go bar to bar, Siwa finds his way past the Latvian on the finish line jump.
13:04And Fevra taking a quick look across.
13:07That's the line he wanted on the opening lap.
13:18Siwa fourth.
13:21Jonas fifth.
13:23Fevra going to the inside.
13:25Picks off his teammate.
13:27Then goes around the outside.
13:29Oh, Siwa down as well.
13:32Oh, I tell you what, he's lucky there, isn't he?
13:35And look at that.
13:36Two positions in quick succession for Roman Fevra.
13:40Put himself right there, just picked himself up after that mistake in ninth.
13:45And already he's now up in the fourth place.
13:48All because of this.
13:49Siwa tipping off here.
13:52And look at that, how close Jonas was to clipping his helmet.
13:56See, we're now in ninth.
14:04Fevra.
14:07Now up into fourth place.
14:09And he can see traffic ahead of him.
14:18Watch this here.
14:19Oh, this is Siwa.
14:21Oh, he's down again.
14:22Off the side of the track.
14:23Oh, and Iago off the side of the track with him.
14:27So already, then.
14:39Oh, and Jonas down.
