The government has a pathway to more than 90 seats. But the catastrophe for the Coalition means they will end up with fewer than half of Labor’s total, most of its losses in major cities.

00:00it was a remarkable election night let's look at the figures as they are the next day

00:06the labor party is just under 35 percent the coalition 32 percent greens 12 others 13 one

00:12nation 6 that's translating into a three percent swing to to labor it's only the fifth swing to a

00:19government in 60 years the first swing to a first term government in a century labor's vote 55.1

00:25that's up towards the level of 1943 when labor was dominant before the formation of the liberal

00:31party and it's the worst result for the coalition since then as well let's look at the seats in the

00:35chamber the labor party has a definite 86 seats now tony abbott won 90 seats in the landslide in 2013

00:42so that's the sort of level the labor party's got and there's still some seats in dark the liberal

00:47coalition on 39 39 seats others 11 there's a few seats where the greens could win perhaps three

00:53seats they just haven't been confirmed yet now look at the members that have been defeated for

00:58for the coalition there's david coleman a front bencher michael suker a front bencher peter dunn of

01:03course the leader keith wallahan an upcoming member that's all but one of those seats is an urban seat

01:10one of the capital city seats the liberal party did badly in inner cities last time that spread further

01:15out to other city seats the cities of australia most of the liberal party seats have been defeated all

01:21across the country and if we look at the what's happened for the labor party they've got a sea of

01:26red coming into the chamber some of them in defeated defeating sitting members for the liberal party

01:31some of them replacing retiring members but the difference between those blue seats going out of

01:36the chamber and the sea of red coming in shows the scale of labor's victory at the election

01:41and the
