Anthony Albanese and Labor claim landslide 2025 election win

Anthony Albanese is now the first Prime Minister since John Howard in 2004, to be elected to a consecutive term and the first Labor Prime Minister to achieve the feat since Bob Hawke in 1984.

00:00What a remarkable evening this has been.

00:05Labor returned with an increased majority in Parliament.

00:09Labor's primary vote nationally is above the Coalition.

00:12That's a pretty rare feat in Australian politics.

00:15And the Coalition's slid behind the combined primary vote of minor parties and independents

00:20as well.

00:21Coming into Saturday night, the Coalition was hoping to make gains on this side of the

00:25board.

00:26They're keen to form majority government, but they've gone backwards, it's this side

00:30of the board we've seen flips.

00:31Labor gaining more than a dozen seats around the country.

00:35Some very marginal seats, Deakin and Bennelong and Sturt, Sturt the Adelaide seat in the

00:40eastern suburbs of Adelaide, meaning that Labor now holds all of the seats in metropolitan

00:45Adelaide.

00:46We've also seen some seats like Braddon Flip on much higher margins.

00:50In fact, Tasmania is one of the standout states for Labor in this election.

00:55Have a look at the state of Tasmania, because it's a liberal wipeout, they don't hold any

00:59seats now on the apple aisle.

01:01We've seen a swing toward the government of about 8.6%, Labor getting nearly 63% of the

01:07two party preferred vote.

01:09That is the biggest statewide swing in the country.

01:12But it's good news for the government everywhere.

01:14Have a look at Victoria.

01:15This is the state that the Coalition was hoping it might make significant gains in and they've

01:18gone backwards.

01:192.4% swing toward the government.

01:22And they hold now 57.2% of the two party preferred vote there at the close of counting on Saturday.

01:29And then there's Queensland, where Labor again has made significant gains and made a big dent

01:34in the state that the Coalition really dominates.

01:38A 3.4% statewide swing, nearly 50-50 on the two party preferred.

01:42And they've flipped a fair few seats.

01:45They now hold about a third of the seats in Queensland, with some still to be determined.

01:49Seeds like Petrie in the northern suburbs of Brisbane.

01:51Ford, there's Bonner, there's Leichhardt around Cairns in the far north of Queensland.

01:56And of course, the one that's grabbed all of the headlines, the seat of Dixon.

02:01Peter Dutton's seat, the opposition leader losing his seat in this election.

02:06That, a remarkable result on a remarkable evening in politics.
