To Show Their Happiness, Baby Reindeer Pounce and Yes, It Is Just as Adorable As You Think

00:00Here at the San Diego Zoo, our reindeer herd is getting bigger.

00:03We have a brand new baby boy, 12 pounds, born right here.

00:06The baby reindeer was born 12 pounds and he's growing every day.

00:10He gets spurts of activity, he runs around the exhibit,

00:13a little wobbly on his legs every once in a while because he has some hilly terrain,

00:16but he stays pretty close to mom and mom stays pretty close to him.

00:19Reindeer are from the northern climates, so North America, Northern Asia and Europe.

00:24They live in a tundra area, so they have amazing adaptations to survive there.

00:29A very thick coat to keep them warm.

00:31They have big round feet, they're able to walk on the snow, they're like snowshoes.

00:36They also, what's really neat about reindeers, they're the only animal

00:39where both the male and females have antlers.

00:42So they use those antlers to work their way into the herd for dominancy and social status,

00:47but the females will also use them to protect their kids.

00:50They have a great sense of smell, they can smell food under the snow.

00:55So they'll smell lichen or grasses that they can't even see,

00:58and they'll use those big paws not only to walk on the snow,

01:01but to dig up the snow to find their food.
