Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) discusses a possible run for Alabama Governor.
Transcript
00:01You made some news over the recess.
00:03Yeah.
00:04Are you going to run for governor?
00:06Well, I'm considering it.
00:07My wife and I and family, we've sat down once and we've really talked hard about it.
00:11I want to do what's best for the people of Alabama.
00:14Is it here or is it in the governor's seat back in Montgomery?
00:19I'll probably make my decision sometimes in May.
00:23A lot of people have jumped the gun on it.
00:25I'm talking to President Trump about it.
00:27Hopefully I'll get to this week.
00:29We're going to Tuscaloosa to a commencement exercise he's going to speak at.
00:35But, you know, I just want to do what's best.
00:38I like it up here.
00:40I think we can get something done.
00:42But can I get more done in Montgomery?
00:43We'll see.
00:44So you have not spoken to Trump yet, but you plan to speak to Trump.
00:47Oh, yeah.
00:48We'll speak about it.
00:49And so what are you weighing?
00:50What factors are you weighing?
00:52Well, just looking and see what best fits Alabama.
00:55Can I go back there and get more done there on a different level?
00:59I know a lot of people up here now.
01:01That's the good thing.
01:02You find out how this place works.
01:04And then if I do go back to the governorship in Alabama, then the opportunity to know people
01:10here, have good communication, know President Trump, I think that's a big benefit.
01:17But also we can do a lot up here, so we'll just wait and see.
01:20Is the leadership urging you to stay here?
01:23Is the Senate Republican leadership urging you to stay?
01:26Well, they all say, hey, do what's best what you think for you and your family and the state.
01:31Again, we represent the country, but we certainly just represent the state and the constituents that sent us up here.
01:38So, you know, there's a lot of work to do.
01:41We've got to get a lot of work done in the next year and a half.
01:43No matter what happens, I'm still here for another, what, 19 months.
01:50And so a lot of work to be done.
01:52It sounds like you're leaning towards it.
01:53Is that fair?
01:54Well, I would say probably at this time, and I've told people that, you know, if I did it today, I'm leaning in that direction.
02:00But there's a lot of people I have to talk to.
02:02I'm going to talk to people in Montgomery.
02:03I'm going to talk to people here, President Trump.
02:07I'll talk to the leadership here.
02:09I've just gotten to the point of just thinking about it.
02:14Now, the two weeks that I was out, I did talk to people that really can give you a good opinion of what you can do and how you can do it.
02:23So, next few weeks will be the tail and tail.
02:26But it'll be sometime in May you'll make a phone call.
02:28Yeah, before Memorial Day.
02:29Before Memorial Day.
02:30Yeah.
