00:00Microsoft is about to launch its own new AI language model, and it's going to be a big one.

00:08They're calling it MAI1, and it's being developed entirely in-house by Microsoft.

00:13So first, let's look at who's behind this new AI model, because it's quite an interesting connection.

00:18The development of MAI1 is being led by Mustafa Suleiman, who used to work at Google AI,

00:22and was also the CEO of an AI startup called Inflection.

00:26Now, Microsoft recently made a big move by acquiring Inflection's intellectual property

00:31for a whopping $650 million, and brought on board much of their team, including Suleiman himself.

00:38While MAI1 might use some of the training data and technologies from Inflection,

00:43it's important to note that this is a brand new creation from Microsoft,

00:47not just a rebranded version of something Inflection was working on.

00:51With Suleiman's experience at Google AI and Inflection,

00:54he brings a lot of expertise to the table for MAI1's development.

00:58All right, now let's talk about how this model compares to other major players in the AI field.

01:03Microsoft has ambitious plans for MAI1, aiming to make it significantly larger

01:07than their earlier, smaller, open-source models.

01:10They're stepping it up to about 500 billion parameters,

01:13which marks a substantial advancement for them.

01:16For a bit of context, OpenAI's GPT-4,

01:19one of the most advanced AI language models currently available,

01:22boasts over one trillion parameters.

01:25Meanwhile, Meta's Llama 2 models come with up to 70 billion parameters.

01:30So while MAI1 might not match GPT-4's size,

01:33it's definitely shaping up to be a strong competitor in the AI language model field.

01:38And Microsoft has a lot of resources at their disposal to make MAI1 a success.

01:43They have vast amounts of data and computing power,

01:46including large clusters of servers with NVIDIA's graphic processing units.

01:50All of this will play a crucial role in training and supporting the development of MAI1.

01:54It seems like Microsoft is investing heavily in this model

02:34making them accessible to many people.

02:36We're quite happy with this setup.

02:37Additionally, Scott highlighted that for many years,

02:40Microsoft has been actively developing AI models,

02:43both in Microsoft research and within their product groups.

02:46He noted that working on AI models is fascinating

02:49and that their researchers have done excellent work in studying and building them.

02:53Recently, emails released as part of the U.S. Justice Department's antitrust case against Google

02:59revealed that Microsoft's investment in OpenAI

03:02was partly driven by concerns over Google's advancements in AI.

03:06According to a report by Business Insider,

03:09this came to light through an internal email involving Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates,

03:13CEO Satya Nadella, and Scott.

03:16In a June 2019 email titled Thoughts on OpenAI,

03:20the discussion focused on the investment opportunities in the AI organization

03:24and highlighted areas where Google was notably ahead of Microsoft in AI research and models.

03:29Scott initially was somewhat dismissive of OpenAI and Google DeepMind's achievements,

03:34which he referred to as game-playing stunts,

03:36possibly alluding to AlphaGo Zero's demonstrations.

03:40However, he grew concerned when he recognized the advanced capabilities

03:43of competitors' natural language processing models.

03:46Now, if you are curious about what exactly MAI-1 will be used for

04:23which is a lot, but still less than the over 1 trillion parameters in GPT-4.

04:29This might give GPT-4 a bit of an advantage

04:31when it comes to raw processing power and handling complex tasks.

04:36However, Microsoft has a lot of data and computing resources at their disposal,

04:39which could help close that gap.

04:41Both models are designed to be really good at a wide range of tasks,

04:45from processing natural language to generating code.

04:48GPT-4 has already shown some impressive results

04:51on academic and professional tests,

04:52like the uniform bar exam.

04:55We don't know the full extent of what MAI-1 will be capable of yet,

04:58but with Microsoft's investment and the leadership of Mustafa Suleiman,

05:02it's likely to be a highly capable model.

05:05Another thing to consider is how these models approach safety and ethics.

05:08GPT-4's training helps it avoid giving harmful responses

05:11and refuse requests for content that's not allowed.

05:14We don't know exactly how MAI-1 will handle these issues yet,

05:37Apple has been closely collaborating with its chip manufacturing partner, TSMC,

05:42to design and initially produce these chips.

05:44However, it's still unclear if the final version of the chips has been manufactured yet.

05:50It's speculated that Apple's server chips may focus on executing AI models,

05:55particularly in AI inference,

05:57using trained AI models to make predictions or decisions,

06:00rather than AI training,

06:02the process of teaching AI models,

06:04where NVIDIA's chips currently dominate the market.

06:07Over the past decade,

06:08Apple has gradually become a significant player in chip design

06:12for products like the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac computers.

06:16This latest project, internally known as Project ACDC,

06:20short for Apple Chips and Data Center,

06:22will integrate Apple's chip design capabilities into the operation of servers

06:26used by Apple's clients, according to sources.

06:29The project has been ongoing for several years,

06:32although the timeline for launching these server chips remains uncertain.

06:35Apple is expected to unveil more new AI products and AI-related updates

06:39at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

06:42An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on these reported developments.

06:46Now, one more interesting update from YouTube.

06:48The platform is rolling out a new AI-powered jump-ahead feature for premium subscribers.

06:53This feature makes it easier to skip directly to the most popular or interesting parts of videos,

06:58enhancing the viewing experience by letting users quickly access the highlights.

07:02The feature uses AI to analyze patterns in how viewers watch and interact with videos.

07:08When you double-tap on a video,

07:09it will recommend skipping ahead to the next section that is commonly watched

07:13or considered the best part based on viewer behavior data.

07:16Previously, double-tapping would just skip ahead a set amount of time

07:20or jump between chapters if the creator had set them up.

07:22But this could be clunky, especially on mobile devices.

07:25The new AI-jump-ahead feature aims to make skipping to the good parts more seamless.

07:29For now, the jump-ahead feature is rolling out as an experiment

07:32for YouTube premium subscribers using the Android app.

07:36Premium is YouTube's paid membership that removes ads and allows offline viewing.

07:41When using an eligible video,

07:43double-tapping will bring up a jump-ahead button

07:45that will skip the video to the next popular segment,

07:48as determined by YouTube's AI system analyzing viewer patterns.

07:52The feature currently only works for English videos,

07:55but YouTube may expand it further if the experiment is successful.

08:00Creators will also be able to use jump-ahead when watching their own videos,

08:03even without a premium subscription.
