00:00Chiefs move back to make the final selection of tonight's first round.
00:04They draft the offensive tackle Josh Simmons out of Ohio State.
00:09The pick officially in once again, the 32nd and final pick of tonight's opening round.
00:15The Kansas City Chiefs have selected Josh Simmons from Ohio State.
00:20Joe, off to a sensational 2024 campaign for the Buckeyes,
00:24but was injured in game number six against Oregon.
00:28The Buckeyes did reshuffle to replace some of that production along the left side,
00:32but he was having a great year at Ohio State in 2024
00:36and a very productive collegiate career before that.
00:39We mentioned how KC would prioritize that offensive line
00:43trying to shore up their biggest issue in Super Bowl 59.
00:46They do so with Ohio State's Josh Simmons.
00:49Final pick of tonight's first round. How does it look to you?
00:52Yeah, I mean, again, it's neat, right?
00:54You talk about Pat Mahomes being abused in the Super Bowl
00:57and Josh Williams has the ability to come in and potentially challenge for a starting job.
01:02Great wingspan, 6'5", 3'10".
01:04Again, could gain some weight and still not miss a beat.
01:07And again, you talk about the patella tendon surgery, right, that he suffered at Ohio State.
01:12He was trending to be the best player on that offensive line.
01:15But again, he's come back from injury.
01:17He's rehabbed. He's 100%.
01:19Showcase that didn't go to the combine, but still showcase that, that he's 100% healthy.
01:24And again, at 32 overall, Kev, not a bad pick in terms of safety for that O-line and Andy Reid.
01:31It was very interesting with the medical stuff.
01:34Like, Josh Simmons, you were like,
01:34I could have been the number one offensive tackle in his class and get injured.
01:39Maybe, you know, I've seen some that say a torn patella could be the most difficult thing to come back from.
01:45But if you're Kansas City, that's the type of chance I think you'd take.
01:50What's tough, though, is Kansas City, obviously, win now mode.
01:54Are they the team that needed to take that chance?
01:56I wonder if KC's a little bummed out.
01:59Connor Lee or, you know, some of the other tackle options weren't on the board for them.
02:03That felt a little bit more, okay, I can play this guy day one.
02:06By all reports, the medicals were clean for Josh Simmons.
02:09Again, he started six games, completed five for Ohio State,
02:12and was so good in those opening five games of the year,
02:15he still earned Big Ten honorable mention during the 2024 college football season.
02:21But Blue and Cap, the opening round has come to a close,
02:24and the Kansas City Chiefs at 32nd overall select Josh Simmons.
02:27You guys highlighted how offensive line, offensive tackle would be priority.
02:32How do you grade the selection for KC,
02:35and might we see Josh Simmons start right away in Kansas City?
02:38We specifically called out his name when we were talking a couple of minutes ago,
02:41so a pick that makes a lot of sense to me.
02:43What's interesting to me about the Chiefs is that after that 2020 Super Bowl
02:48where Mahomes got chased all over the field, he's on a bad ankle,
02:52and they got blown out by Tampa,
02:54they did do a good job of retooling that offensive line
02:57and went on to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
03:00Obviously, you gave it a run to win a third,
03:03getting back to the big game where they got blown out again,
03:06in part because they could not contain Philadelphia's pass rush.
03:11So, back to the drawing board, they're going to rebuild it again,
03:14and Simmons will clearly be a key piece there.
03:17Yeah, and they can bring them along slowly.
03:18They'll have five starters, but it's about the future for him.
03:22They had to dress their offensive line, Mike.
03:24It's been such a disappointment,
03:26because you brought up the time when they lost to the Bucs.
03:29The next year, they had five new starters.
03:31They admitted their mistake.
03:33And then they had the problem with Joe Tooney.
03:35They shipped him out to Chicago.
03:37Simmons will eventually be a starter for them.
03:38It's just a matter of when he'll be ready,
03:40but it makes total sense.
03:42They've got to rebuild their offensive line a little bit.
03:44Now, the thing is, where will they line him up?
03:46That's the question.
03:47They've got to see him first when he comes back from his knee injury.
03:49Yeah, Ben, I don't think I have too many concerns about the Chiefs
03:52and the manner in which they play.
03:53I think people get concerned watching them during the year
03:57because they won a lot of games in ugly fashion,
04:00and they weren't the impressive, explosive offensive Chiefs team
04:05that we saw in previous years.
04:07But this has become a defensive-minded football team,
04:10and they won a lot of games close
04:11because they are good on that side of the ball.
04:13So it's going to be up to the Ravens, the Bills,
04:15and anybody else to knock them off the top of the mountain in the AFC.
