Coalition pledge to put $90 million towards domestic violence prevention

In Tasmania the coalition leader visited a women’s shelter where he detailed his pledge to boost domestic violence prevention and support. He then moved on to a vineyard in the marginal seat of Lyons to talk about agriculture where Evelyn Manfield filed this report.

00:00We've arrived at a rather windy winery here in Tasmania in the seat of Lions.

00:07This is a key contest this election because Labor only holds it on a thin margin

00:12and the current member is retiring.

00:15Now Peter Dutton has come here with his team to promote a coalition government

00:20spending more money on irrigation to help businesses like this working in the agriculture space.

00:26But look, the key policy out of the coalition today is to do with domestic violence.

00:31They've announced a $90 million domestic violence package.

00:35A couple of elements in that would be new laws that would target perpetrators.

00:40It would see anyone who was using something like a mobile phone

00:43to track a victim down and cause them fear.

00:46That would be a crime.

00:48Also a register so police and other authorities could look to see

00:52if someone had a history of family violence and offending

00:56and that wouldn't be public though.

00:58That would just be for authorities and police.

01:01Australian men have to be the best role models that they can be.

01:04And we have to provide an example to our children, in particular our sons.

01:08We need to make sure that we don't walk past examples of violence

01:12either in the workplace or in family settings or anywhere in the community.

01:16I think we have to have a much greater discussion in our community, in our country,

01:20about the violence of computer games and what our kids are consuming,

01:25absorbing at rapid rates, you know, by the terabyte online,

01:28which is why we've championed the under-16 ban for social media.

01:33I think the social media companies deserve to be absolutely condemned

01:37for some of their poor conduct.

01:39I think that is a big part of the discussion that we need to have.

01:43But look, as we get towards the pointy end of this election campaign,

01:47the opposition leader is facing questions on all fronts.

01:51Nuclear was a big one today.

01:53If he will go to a proposed nuclear site in the next sort of week and a half that's left,

01:58not giving a clear answer.

02:00Instead, deciding to talk about how many petrol stations he's been to

02:03to promote the fuel excise.

02:06He was also asked about the Australian Public Service.

02:08We know that he wants to cut 41,000 jobs over five years from the Commonwealth Public Service.

02:14He did confirm today all of those cuts would come from Canberra.

02:19Although he did point out that not all of those 41,000 jobs were current jobs.

02:23Some of them were future, but we're not sure exactly how many.

02:27Until then, he decided to undo his name and make sure he decided to keep them Core,
