00:00After a nine-day mourning period and funeral for Pope Francis, the Catholic Church will convene the next conclave.

00:08Here, the College of Cardinals will gather to elect the church's next head.

00:13Four rounds of voting are held each day until a cardinal secures a two-thirds majority.

00:19But who are the possible contenders to become the next pontiff?

00:24Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo, the Archbishop of Budapest, is considered a strong candidate.

00:32He twice led the Council of European Episcopal Conferences,

00:36evidence of his support amongst European Cardinals, the largest voting bloc.

00:44Germany's Reinhard Marx made headlines when he offered to resign as Archbishop

00:49to atone for the German church's deep failures in handling abuse.

00:53Pope Francis rejected the resignation and told him to stay.

00:59But Conservatives remain skeptical of him.

01:07Mark Olet of Canada led the Vatican's influential bishop's office for over a decade,

01:13overseeing the vetting of Episcopal candidates worldwide.

01:17He's seen as more conservative than Pope Francis.

01:25Italian Cardinal Pietro Parlan, Pope Francis' Secretary of State since 2015,

01:31is widely seen as a leading contender, given his senior role in the Vatican hierarchy.

01:37As a former ambassador to Venezuela, Parlan knows the Latin American church well.

01:43An American pope has long been seen as unlikely, given the U.S.'s geopolitical power.

01:51But Chicago-born Robert Prevost could break that taboo.

01:55He's the current prefect of the Vatican's dicastery for bishops,

02:01in charge of vetting nominations from around the world.

02:07Ghanaian Robert Serra was long considered to have the best chance of becoming the first African pope.

02:13Favored by Conservatives, Serra represents a return to the style of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

02:23Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn was a student of Pope Benedict's and on paper has the intellectual credentials to appeal to Conservatives.

02:32But he has drawn criticism from within the Vatican for challenging its past inaction against high-ranking abusers.

02:41Filipino Luis Tagli would appear to be Pope Francis' pick for the first Asian pontiff.

02:53Francis brought him to Rome to lead the church's missionary office, serving much of Asia and Africa.

03:04As the conclave approaches, the world waits to see who will lead the Catholic Church into its next chapter.
