Taiwan's Legislature Welcomes New Members to Ukraine Friendship Committee

Taiwan's legislature has welcomed some new members to its parliamentary friendship committee with Ukraine. The two countries are finding parallels in their fight for sovereignty and need for political, economic and social resilience.

00:05with Ukraine. That's a group of lawmakers from both sides coming together through shared values

00:10of human rights, freedom and democracy. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022,

00:16Taiwan has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, pointing to parallels between the two nations'

00:21tense relations with larger neighbors. Taiwan and Ukraine may be geographically

00:26distant, but we are united by common purpose and shared vulnerability. We both stand on the

00:35front line of authoritarian regimes, pressures. That is why this Parliamentary Friendship Group is

00:41not symbolic. It is strategic. It is a declaration that democracy does not stand alone. We are

00:49stronger together and we must act together. Slava, Ukraine.

00:53Several advocates from Ukraine who help coordinate the charter are also here in Taipei. They say more

00:59exchanges between Taiwan and Ukraine will make both countries more resilient.

01:04I think that right now the fact that we are here, Ukraine is still fighting on the front line,

01:11Taiwan is constantly working on increasing its security infrastructure and on establishing more

01:19and more connections with Ukraine. This proves that we are strong and we will be even stronger in the

01:26future to defeat all threats. The new members of the friendship group are lawmakers representing Taiwan's

01:34legislature elected last year. Now these legislators are aiming to pick up that work, bridging ties

01:40between Taiwan and Ukraine on political, economic and ideological fronts to fight for and maintain peace
