Chinese scientists develop prototype to print bricks made of lunar soil
Chinese scientists from the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory in Hefei, east China's Anhui Province, have been developing the prototype of a device that produces bricks made of lunar soil with 3D printing technology.
Consisting of an optical solar concentrator module and a manufacturing module, the prototype uses a parabolic reflector to concentrate solar energy, with fiber optics transmitting the energy to produce a solar concentration ratio exceeding 3,000 times at the fiber ends, which is sufficient to melt lunar soil.
To realize solar concentration transmission of more than 3,000 times, the team conducted nearly 100 process experiments and performance tests, ultimately developing fused-end fiber optics that overcame low energy transmission efficiency.
