Each 15th of August the church and parish of Chachapoyas celebrate the festival of Mama Asunta It all started between 1842 and 1845 when a local man, Julián Monteza returned from living in the Ecuadorian capital Quito... He brought back two beautiful religious icons, the first was a statue of Jesus of Nazareth, the second depicted the Virgin of the Assumption. With the passage of years, customs and tradition she was rebaptised with the name Virign Asunta. The arrival of the statues from Ecuador was greeted by a procession, with drums and horns, but also in a religious spirit. Since then Chachapoyas has reprised the festival every year, with everyone in town joining the fervent celebrations. Fertur Peru Travel.
