'Do Not Be Deterred': Gov. Josh Shapiro Asked To Send A Message To The Younger Jewish Community

At a press briefing on Thursday, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) spoke about his faith following the arson at the governor's mansion.

00:00I'll just say a message to people of all faith communities. Do not be deterred in

00:09practicing your faith. Do not be deterred in being proud of who you are. I'm proud

00:15of who I am. Lori's proud of who she is. We're raising our children to be proud

00:19of who they are and here in the birthplace of religious freedom, a place

00:24that William Penn founded to be a place that would be warm and welcoming for

00:29people of all different faiths. I want you to know that you're safe here in the

00:33Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and we're going to celebrate your faith. I was

00:39asked, Annie, I don't know if it was you or someone else, had asked about our

00:44reflection on, maybe it's Tom, I apologize, our reflection on some of the

00:49items in the room. At one point today when we stopped to see the chandelier

00:58that had come down from the ceiling and was kind of partly melted and partly

01:03covered, you know, in soot and what have you from the fire, it was it was resting

01:09on a place on the floor where just the night before we had celebrated our

01:16Passover Seder. Two or three weeks earlier we had celebrated an iftar dinner at the

01:25conclusion of Ramadan and about a year before that where kids danced and played

01:30at our son Ruben's bar mitzvah and right where the Christmas tree stands every

01:36December in the governor's residence. We really believe that Pennsylvania and and

01:42this residence should be a place where people of all faiths are welcome and all

01:46faiths are comforted and feel as though they can celebrate openly and proudly who

01:54they are and we're going to get that room back to being a place that's warm and

02:00welcoming for all.
