On today's Peep Show Dave & Chuck talk about how people like to be scared at haunted houses and that leads to how scary it would be at a real #CanadianHauntedHouse

00:00All right, many Halloween fans love that the holiday is an excuse to dress up and eat candy,

00:10but why are people obsessed with Halloween haunted houses?

00:18Frank McAndrew is a professor of psychology at Knox College who has written extensively

00:22about creepiness and horror.

00:24He says the experiences provide an ideal emotional cocktail.

00:30He says they describe recreational fear as a form of play that combines the perfect mix of fear,

00:38enjoyment, and surprise, and just the right doses of these emotions appear to be addictive for many people.

00:45It's like my whole life I've never liked those things.

00:47When I was in Cub Scouts, I went to one, like when I was a little kid, and it was, I did not like it.

00:53And then I went to another one that was like some Christian haunted house,

00:58which was like, I was like, I'm sorry, what?

01:00You guys are crazy.

01:01I've never even heard of a Christian haunted house.

01:04So like your sins jump out at you?

01:05Yeah, they'd be like, this is what happens when you drink and drive!

01:10And then you're like, Jesus, oh!

01:15Oh, yeah, they had some guy dressed as the devil, and then they had, it was, it was like a lot of,

01:21Yeah, they'd have like a, like a skit about like drug use.

01:26It was like, it was really bad.

01:28And then as an adult, I went through two rooms in one, and then, um, yeah.

01:32Was I, I left, I left in the emergency exit.

01:35Yeah.

01:37That was when I was 25.

01:39I've never heard of such a thing, Andy.

01:45I didn't, I knew that Andy hated these things.

01:55There's people strategically placed to pop out and scare the bejesus out of you, and I have no defense against it.

02:06So that makes it even worse, because it's an actual real-life haunted spot, and then

02:10they turned it into this massively huge, like, Hollywood haunted stories.

02:19over again, and never made it through.

02:21It's an abandoned, like, insane asylum?

02:24I knew James was going to this place, and I thought, oh, yeah, James, he likes haunted houses,

02:30so it's, like, whatever.

02:32But, um, it turns out he is terrified in them.

02:35I didn't realize that either.

02:36I love Halloween, but I hate, like, the jump scares.

02:42I'm looking to be, like, I'm so, it would be so, take so much to make me jump, that if

02:47you do it, I'm like, damn, I'll swear, I'll call you a mother effer in every other word

02:52in the book, but I'm like, wow, they did it.

03:23of people getting scared at a haunted house, it's from that place.

05:20it's because they both have, like, cartoonish scared faces.

05:28I know Downriver, they used to have, like, an old church.

05:33Downriver here in Michigan, that's what we call it.

05:35They used to have a church that was, like, really old, probably from, like, the 1800s.
