Nursing closure ‘on hold’ at Cardiff University

Cardiff University has announced the proposed closure of its nursing department is on hold for the time being, with job cuts also decreasing - although almost 300 staff members could still be let off. Staff members have called losses ‘cruel’ and will take industrial action.

00:00Cardiff University made a shock announcement at the start of the year when they revealed they'd

00:07be cutting 400 jobs and getting rid of a number of departments including music and nursing. The

00:14university said that funding was becoming increasingly difficult with a lack of foreign

00:18students attending the university so difficult decisions had to be made. They've now gone back

00:24somewhat on that decision and have said that nursing could still remain and the proposed 400

00:29job cuts could now be less than 300. Losing the nursing courses was a particularly controversial

00:35decision with Senedd members and healthcare bosses saying that Wales relied on the university to

00:40provide an upkeep of nurses across the country so despite no official decision being made yet

00:45the prospect of keeping nursing at Cardiff University has been a welcome move for many. But it hasn't

00:52gone far enough for many staff members who will take industrial action on May 1st over job cuts

00:57that they call cruel and unnecessary. Staff members who are a part of the university and college union

01:02voted for industrial action and also a boycott on marking an assessment over the summer term.

01:06The university has called the move disappointing and says it will cause disruption to students.

01:12The institution is no stranger to strikes over the last few years after previous walkouts over

01:18paying conditions. The university has said compulsory redundancies are a last resort and will work in

01:24partnership with relevant bodies to avoid them and also will do what they can to minimize disruption

01:29during industrial action. Cardiff University has recently placed among the top 200 universities in

01:35the world but it shows that even the biggest can fall foul to problems. J.P. Watkins reported for
