With an election looming, western Sydney leaders are calling out for more infrastructure, arguing their region pitches above its weight in economic and population growth. They're arguing transport planned for the new international airport doesn't connect to key hubs.

00:06We've seen rental prices go up, we've seen mortgages go up.

00:09Eight Outer Western Sydney councils are demanding more federal government investment.

00:15Their key ask, a train line connecting growing hubs to each other, not just the CBD.

00:22A new metro from Western Sydney Airport to St Mary's is already underway,

00:27but they want it extended further north.

00:30It's about how do we get people from an area like Campbelltown to Penrith to go to work for the day.

00:36At the moment it's two and a half hours by public transport, that's just not good enough.

00:40We are talking about an extraordinary and unprecedented amount of money that's going into South Western Sydney.

00:45I have to balance that against the taxpayers of Goulburn and Lismore and Dubbo and Broken Hill.

00:51With a federal election just weeks away, both sides of politics have been vying to appeal to voters

00:56in the outer suburban belt around Sydney's west.

01:00These areas have been hit hard by the rising cost of housing and transport,

01:05as well as population growth outpacing infrastructure investment.

01:10The government and opposition have been campaigning heavily in Western Sydney.

01:14To build the new infrastructure and invest in vital services.

01:18But today many residents of Western Sydney are struggling.

01:21The labour team today broke ground with the state government on a new school in the city's north west.

01:28We all grew up in Western Sydney.

01:30It was the same sorry tale.

01:32People would move in and have to wait for ages for the infrastructure and the schools to be developed.

01:38Well, we're saying enough is enough.

01:40Big promises for a region with big aspirations.
